UOL continues to uphold quality research in academia

Lahore, December 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Universities in Pakistan toil on building up a research-driven academic spectrum and take pride in expanding the horizons of knowledge, introducing novel solutions to existing problems, and meeting societal needs by developing advanced tools.

Likewise, the University of Lahore (UOL) has also been successfully excelling as a research-based institute by prioritising scholarly excellence at the core of its mission. The work and progress of UOL are reflected in the massive number of research publications in a wide array of fields.

UOL believes in fuelling innovation among faculty, staff, and students by heavily investing in sowing the seeds of quality research in academia. In the year 2021, a massive total of 1645 research papers was contributed to the expanding academia. All papers were published in Web of Science/ Scopus indexed journals, an indication that they were all high quality researches that meet the international rigorous criteria.

The Faculty of Science topped the list with 694 papers (42 per cent) followed by the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences with 341 (21 per cent). Other contributing faculties were; Management Sciences 133 (8 per cent), University College of Medicine and Dentistry 116 (7 per cent), Pharmacy 122 (7 per cent), and Engineering and Technology 107 (6 per cent).

To recognize the eminent researchers of 2021, a Research Productivity Awards (RPA) ceremony was held on October 8, 2022 under the management of the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC). A total of 178 awards were handed over to the distinguished researchers of UOL under the recently approved RPA Policy 2022.

The awards were; 177 Research Productivity Awards, 3 highly-Cited Researcher Awards, and 2 PhD Supervision Awards. Appreciation certificates and cash prizes worth Rs. 43 million were also distributed.

As the chief guest of the award ceremony, Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir (Chairman, Pakistan Higher Education Commission) said, “Our universities must tailor their curricula on the latest trends in all fields, launch market-oriented programs, and encourage entrepreneurship.”

Addressing the audience during the ceremony, Mr. Awais Raoof (Chairman BoG, UOL) called upon researchers to focus on community-related challenges and endeavour to offer solutions to them. “We should be relevant to our neighbouring communities through research. We shall attach higher weightage to community research as compared to other types of research,” he added.

According to the upgraded RPA Policy, a cash award and a certificate of appreciation ought to be given to the outstanding researchers in six (06) categories, namely: research publication award, patent registration award, HEC/PSF/international research project winning award, book publication award, highly cited research award, and PhD thesis supervision award. Devised by ORIC under the guidance of the rector, RPA aims at enhancing the quality and quantity of research and increasing publications in the Web of Science and Scopus journals.
