UCMD promotes experiential learning of students via multiple clerkship opportunities

Lahore, January 06, 2023 (PPI-OT):The skills learned in the classroom are extremely important and are key to success, nonetheless there is no comparison of hands-on learning experiences, especially for the students in patient-facing careers. The University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD) strives to offer its students a chance to demonstrate what they have learned on campus and to gain enough hands-on experience to be competitive in the job market. The UCMD continues to provide clerkship opportunities to its students and alumni.

In line with its student facilitation undertakings, UCMD started an exchange program with Memorial Hospitals Group, Turkey in April 2021. An international agenda of medicine and surgical professional exchange for observer-ship was initiated between the two institutes with futurist horizon of collaboration of doctors among the two nations. Two of UCMD’s alumni were selected to gain real-world healthcare experience alongside trained professionals in Turkey.

Dr Mahnoor Tahir Chaudry (UCMD Alumni, one of the two selected alumni) shared her experience and gratitude in these words: “It has been my second selection through my alma mater as their international representatives and I cannot be more grateful.

Turkey has been mesmerizing and thrilling in the concept of professional intake meanwhile traveling with colleagues is always a bonus. New horizons, heights and approaches of plastic surgery and Aesthetics at Istanbul still enthrals me”.

Sharing her experience of working in Turkey, Dr Haleema Imran Malik (UCMD Alumni) said that: “I am utterly thankful to UCMD for providing me with this opportunity for brighter approaches and bigger goals. Practicing Dermatology and Aesthetics in Turkey is a dream come true for me. I will cherish this experience always”.

UCMD is also preparing students for their residency training programs through clerkships- a course of clinical medical during the third or fourth year of medical school. Clerkships provide opportunities to explore different specialties alongside making connections with program directors and other clinicians at hospitals and in offices.

With his once in a life time ER Medicine Clerkship experience, Mr Muhammad Arsalan (2nd Year, MBBS student) expressed gratitude towards UCMD. “From studying pneumothorax in Year 1 to assisting thoracotomy for the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax, UCMD has played a significant role in providing quality knowledge, skills and exposure for which I am forever grateful”, he mentioned.

Mr Salman Umer (2nd Year, MBBS student) also stated that Swedish Covenant Hospital affiliated clerkship in Family Medicine was a great opportunity for him to get accustomed to the US healthcare system. He added: “I got to learn a lot of new things, alongside practicing my previously learnt skills. It was truly an amazing experience. I’m really thankful to UCMD for providing me with this platform, and the skill set to execute it flawlessly” remarks of Mr Umer.
