UCMD implements early clinical exposure system to students of MBBS and BDS

Lahore, January 06, 2023 (PPI-OT):A teaching-learning methodology popularly known as Early Clinical Exposure (ECE) helps medical students in various ways; strengthens them academically, improves their clinical and communication skills, makes them more confident, and impacts their overall performance.

To harness all the above merits, the University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD) administers a medical curriculum that exposes MBBS and BDS students to the patients as early as first year. The students are exposed to weekly hospital visits from their 1st year in the form of DCH Doctor of Community Health (DCH) rotations.

DCH rotations continue till 3rd year and 4th year onward, the students start their clerkship rotations. It is mandatory for them to rotate in all fields of allied medicine and surgery. The main duty of a doctor in this exercise is ensure care and safety of patients and the community.

The rotations at UCMD are designed in a way that helps students to develop this sense of duty and gain experience by observing different cases early in their academic career. Practical experience and exposure also builds up their theoretical understanding of the basic subjects. The overall value of this exposure helps the students to deal with patients more confidentially and empathetically.
