Haripur, September 02, 2020 (PPI-OT): The President of Pakistan conferred Hilal-i-Imtiaz to Prof. Anwar Gilani, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Haripur on the Independence Day (14th August). Prof. Gilani is amongst a few scientists of Pakistan who has been conferred three civil awards during his professional career; earlier he received Pride of Performance in 2000 and Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2005, in addition to other multiple national / international awards which include Salam prize in Biology, by TWAS, Italy, Ibn-Al-Haytham Prize and Aga Hassan Abdi Gold Medals by Pakistan Academy of Science, Dr. ZA Hashmi Gold Medal by Pakistan Science Foundation, Boehringer International Research Award (Germany), and National Book Foundation Award, Distinguished National Professor and Life-Time Academic Achievements Award by the Government of Pakistan.
Prof. Gilani served at the Aga Khan University for over 30 years, where he won Outstanding Teacher Award while working at different leadership positions. He occupied a national level leadership position (Chairman, PCST) before taking up current position as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Haripur.
Prof. Gilani has made break through discoveries in the area of indigenous medicine and conducted translational studies (from lab to patients) using functional foods in chronic diseases like raised blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, Irritable Bowel Disease and Alzheimer’s disease, for which there is limited success with pharmaceutical medicine.
He maintained 1st National ranking in the field of Pharmaceutical sciences since last couple of decades with the highest total of International Citations/ Impact Factor as evident from PCST data. He has to his credit distinctly high citations (20,000/= with an h-index of 75 based on Google scholar citation report). Prof. Gilani is a co-editor of two WHO Books on Essential Medicine and published 25 chapters in international books. He supervised research of 20 PhDs of international standard; most of his trainees are playing leadership role (Head/Director/Dean/Vice Chancellor).
Prof. Gilani is internationally recognized who is a Member, Editorial Boards of 12 international journals, has been invited/plenary speaker at around 100 international conferences and had the opportunity to represent Pakistan in different meetings of United Nations and International Union of Pharmacology. Prof. Gilani has served as an advisor to WHO on essential medicine and is a Fellow of Pakistan Academy of Sciences as well as Fellow of TWAS – The World Academy of Sciences.
