World Food Day observed at UVAS

Lahore, October 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) observed “World Food Day” with the theme of “Leave No One Behind”. An awareness seminar and a innovative poster contest featured the day.

Dean Noor International University Prof Dr Tahir Zahoor, Chairperson Nutrition University of Home Economics Asma Bilal, Izhar Ul Haq Awan from Pepsi Cola International were the guest speakers of the seminar while Dr Sana Ullah Iqbal, Dr Waqas Ahmad and a number of faculty members and students were present on the occasion.

Guest speakers emphasized on the need of value addition, minimizing food loses and strengthening food security. They suggested to create awareness among peoples about the pure high quality food by utilize our knowledge and skills. They urged that knowledge and research is the key way to curb food security issues in Pakistan.

UVAS inks MoU with University of Okara to promote education and research cooperation 

Lahore, October 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore and University of Okara (UO) signed a memorandum of understanding to promote education and research cooperation. UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad (SI) and University of Okara Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Wajid signed the MoU in a ceremony held at City Campus.

Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Business Management Prof Dr Muhammad Azam, Registrar Sajjad Hayder and number of UVAS senior faculty members and officials from Okara University were present in the ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad said that this cooperation will be very beneficial for both institutions especially for learning/shearing each other experience, innovative knowledge, new ideas and practical skills. He also briefed Prof Wajid regarding UVAS academic, research projects, lab facilities and services of university.

Prof Dr Wajid sought assistance from UVAS for the development of research and labs facilities of Okara University. He also praised UVAS state of the art lab facilities, quality of education and research. Under the MoU, both the universities will strengthen collaboration to promote quality research and education through the exchange of expertise and sharing of laboratories facilities with faculty/researchers and students of both institutions.

Both parties will jointly arrange training workshops, seminars and conferences on regular basis. Both will collaborate in research projects and joint student thesis supervision and explore the possibilities of conducting joint research projects. Both institutions will share teaching materials, lecture notes, case studies, research reports, working papers, audio-visual materials and software among faculty of both universities.

BRI, UVAS jointly arranged seminar on “Dynamism in Dairy Industry and Consumer Demands” 

Lahore, October 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Buffalo Research Institute Pattoki in collaboration with UVAS Department of Dairy Technology under the project “Capacity Building of Dairy Farmers and Industry Stakeholders on Milk Value Chain arranged seminar on “Dynamism in Dairy Industry and Consumer Demands” at Ravi Campus Pattoki.

More than 80 progressive/small dairy farmers attended the seminar from the different regions of Pakistan such as Jhang, Sargodha, Chunian, Okara, Charsadda and Mansehra. The attendees were engaged in technical sessions with the academic experts of UVAS including Chairperson Department of Animal Nutrition Dr Naveed Ul Haq regarding the key factors to consider in dairy businesses and Project Director Dr Muhammad Junaid briefed them about the current standing and future challenges of dairying in Pakistan. Afterwards, the attendees were taken to LES Bhunikey for the demonstration of modern dairy practices.

While addressing the audience of seminar, UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmed lauded the Department of Dairy Technology to arrange this seminar for the capacity building of dairy farmers in collaboration with Buffalo Research Institute Pattoki. He said it is direly needed to reduce the cast of production for the profitability of poor livestock farming community and it is also necessary to work on marketing strategies to sale their dairy products on good rates for the financial benefit of producer. He mentioned UVAS advocated for timely assistance to flood-affected areas by providing food/ration other necessary items as well as veterinary services to save flood victims animals from diseases.

Chief Research Officer BRI Pattoki Dr Mahmood Ijaz Gorsi acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Department of Dairy Technology UVAS. He said Livestock Department aims to develop Livestock sector in our country by arranging such informative events.

Dean Faculty of Animal production and Technology Prof Dr Saima spoke about benefits of capacity building project and appreciated the active involvement of the Dairy Department for imparting practical and theoretical knowledge to dairy professionals. Chairperson Department of Dairy Technology Dr Saima Inayat said that UVAS is nation’s leading public sector university with global recognition due to its quality teaching, research and civic engagement program.

HEC selects UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Nasim as the ‘Distinguished National Professor’

Lahore, October 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad (SI) has been selected as the Distinguished National Professor by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad. On being selected for this prestigious title, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad thanked Allah Almighty, the UVAS faculty, staff and especially his mentor Prof Dr Manzoor Ahmad for their support and encouragement and said that HEC has recognized UVAS for the DNP title for the first time which is a great achievement for the university.

He said he has always been working hard with his full potential and integrity to bring societal impact. Prof Nasim said that producing UVAS graduates of global standard, universal accreditation, new businesses for graduates, advancements and applied research focused on end-client benefit and connected with industry are his top priorities. According to HEC, the recipient of this title will make significant contributions to the educational vision of the university as well as to the progress and development of the community and the country.

US Deputy Chief of Mission visits UVAS Ravi Campus, discusses with Vice-Chancellor climate challenges for Livestock 

Lahore, October 18, 2022 (PPI-OT):Deputy Chief of Mission from US Embassy of Pakistan Mr Andrew Schofer visited the Holstein Demonstration Farm of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore`s Ravi Campus Pattoki and called on Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad.

The US mission discussed with Vice-Chancellor climate change challenges for livestock and way forward. Director Office of Economic Growth and Agriculture USAID Mr Stephen Berlinguette, Public Affairs Office-US Embassy Islamabad Mr Paul Garr, Senior Economic Growth and Energy Advisor Mr Kamran Masood Niazi and Senior Agriculture, Livestock Sector Advisor Dr Mubashra Mukadas and UVAS Senior faculty members were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Andrew Schofer appreciated the UVAS Holstein farm operations, sustainability of Holstein farm project and showed his interest in climate change and challenges for livestock in current scenario of flood 2022. He acknowledged UVAS flood relief activities especially for the betterment of livestock farming community of flood affected areas.

They discussed the proposal of upgrade of livestock farms to climate smart livestock farms, capacity building of farmers and professionals on disaster preparedness and the extension activity to flood affected areas. Earlier the Vice-Chancellor briefed the visitors on UVAS role in flood relief activities 2022 and the climate change vision of UVAS for livestock. He also presented the vote of thanks.

Convener UVAS Flood Relief Management Committee Prof Dr Muhammad Ijaz gave a detailed presentation on UVAS initiatives in various disaster relief activities, flood relief camps and assistance activities (advisory meetings, donors conference, fund raising, collection of goods, etc.) in phase-1, phase-2 and phase-3.

Prof Dr Ijaz said that UVAS Flood Relief Volunteer teams successfully provided veterinary services at the doorsteps of flood victims to save their large and small (buffalo/cattle, sheep and goat, horse, dog and cat) animals from diseases through treatment and vaccination. He said they also distributed food/ration packets, crop seed packets, clothes and shawls and animal feed bags among flood victims in the areas of Fazilpur, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Taunsa Sharif, Rojhan, Charsadda, Layyah, Khairpur and Lasbela with transparent manner.

Dr Muhammad Naveed ul Haque and Dr Hifzul Rahman briefed them on climate change challenges for livestock, Holstein farm project outcomes and the way forward proposal. Mr Andrew Schofer also planted a small tree in front of Akram Complex with a message to mitigate the impact of climate change with the green revolution.

World Egg Day observed at UVAS

Lahore, October 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Poultry Production of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with the Roomi Poultry observed ‘World Egg Day’ with the theme “Eggs For A Better Life” in a befitting manner at Ravi Campus Pattoki on Friday.

Various activities, including a seminar, a walk, egg benefits video, egg quiz competition, singing performance by students of special education center, egg eating and dishes cooking competitions featured the day to create awareness among public about the nutritional value of egg and its importance for the growth of human body. Similar activities were also held at other campuses of UVAS.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad presided over the seminar while Dean Faculty of Animal Production and Technology Prof Dr Saima, Chairman Department of Poultry Production Dr Shahid Mahmood, Chief Executive Officer Forward Solutions Dr Asim Mahmood Khan, Head of Marketing and Sales Roomi Poultry Mr Tahir Jatthol, Dr Shahzad Naveed Jadoon, Dr Tahir Nazir and poultry professionals from public and private organizations and a large number of students from Kinnaird College for Women university (KCW), Superior Collage Pattoki, Government Associate Collage for Girls, Government Special Education Center Pattoki and Government Community Model School Mundaki and also from different departments of UVAS and faculty members attended.

Addressing the seminar, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad advised students to start a campaign to convince people regarding the benefits and become flag bearers of egg benefits, nutritional value of egg, poultry meat and other poultry products for better health of nation. He said students should play their vital role to create awareness among public through social media to negate all kind of misconception (hormones and steroids used in poultry feed) associated with poultry meat and eggs.

He said egg is the unique and affordable source of getting protein which is the basic need for the growth of human body. He said it is direly needed to work on the enhancement of egg production to strengthen poultry sector in Pakistan. Eating egg is the key way to eliminate malnutrition issues in our country he added. He lauded the organizer to arrange a successful event to highlight the importance of egg.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Prof Dr Saima also spoke about the nutritional importance of egg. Dr Shahid Mahmood said that this is a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of egg and its important role in daily routine life and also presented the vote of thanks.

Earlier, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad along with other dignitaries and UVAS faculty and students led the walk which started from Information Technology Center A Block and culminated at the Akram Complex.
At the end of seminar, Dr Saima along with Tahir Jatthol and Dr Ashraf Qureshi distributed cash prizes among the winners of all competitions.
