Farewell MBA 2022

Lahore, May 16, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Lahore School OF Economics hosted a grand farewell on Friday 13th of May at the Pearl Continental hotel, in honour of this year’s graduating classes of MPhils, Executive MBAs and the full-time MBAs. Dr Rashid Amjad, a Professor of Economics and Director at the Graduate Institute of Development Studies, and Dr Sohail Zafar, Dean of Business School, attended the farewell, as did many faculty members.

The function was held after a hiatus of a couple of years due to the impact of Covid, and thus there was a lot of excitement amongst the graduating classes. And the three sections of the MBA cohort who presented on stage did not disappoint the audience.

The highlight of the program was a sterling performance by Rab Nawaz, MBA candidate, who sang a difficult rendition. Many other candidates sang as well, many presented short but hilarious skits highlighting their experiences, and others performed well-prepared choreographies even though the time for preparation for short given the impending exams. Ghazals were sung, with some twists upon the words, with the audience giving raucous support to all the presenters.

At the end there was a dinner but many candidates were seen as photographing their friends, or being photographed by them. The farewell is a time-honoured ritual which puts a closure on a very intense period of learning at the Lahore School for the MPhils, the Executive MBAs and the full-time MBAs. Our graduates have earned the Lahore School a big part of our brand equity, and the Lahore School remains proud of its alumni. It is hoped the 2022 batch will equal if not surpass the achievements of its predecessors.

Status of e-commerce and digital marketing in Pakistan

Lahore, April 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Mr. Badar Khushnood, Co-Founder Fishry.com paid a visit to the Lahore School MBA program on 18th April 2022 to deliver a session on the current status of e-commerce and digital marketing in Pakistan.

Badar, who is a regular guest at our MBA program, opened his session by urging our MBA candidates to consider joining startups for careers. It is true that many startups fail, but those that do succeed offer increasingly more employment, and thus those MBAs who might have been working at a startup which failed can then join those which have grown.

Badar explained different models of e-commerce: some are large transaction B2B models such as Ali Baba; some are Wholesaler to Retailer (W2R) B2B models such as Bazaar, Jugnu, Retailo and Tajir, helping the retailer to bypass the order-taker; some are B2C such as Foodpanda and Daraz; some are C2C or P2P such as PakWheels, OLX and so on. Fishry.com is DTC or direct to consumer, allowing e.g. KFC to sell directly to the consumer.

E-commerce in Pakistan was growing but was limited by the fact that only 1% of Pakistanis had a credit card. Pakistan’s online commerce was only 2% of total commerce, whereas in China it was 35%. At the same time, government had made some changes in e-commerce policies which should help its growth in Pakistan.

E-commerce was leading to some problems as well. Take the example of advertising and selling on fora like Daraz. One particular headache for brands now was the fact that many online buyers were not remembering the names of the brands they bought, thus hurting brand equities. On the other hand, companies were not managing their own online inventories well. One advice to MBA graduates: They must get certifications from Google Garage, Google Analytics, Google Adwords and Facebook. These certifications will help them in their careers.

Mr. Badar Khushnood is a very well-respected name in both e-commerce and digital marketing in Pakistan, and has now very useful experience of working with our government. Lahore School hopes that its famous alumnus will keep on adding value to its programs.

Career Management

Lahore, April 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):Ms Sadia Irfan, Director Human Resource of Fatima Group of Companies, visited the Lahore School on 13 April 2022 and delivered a stellar session on Career Management to the MBA cohort of 2022 in the Organizational Behaviour course. Almost the entire session was interactive and Ms Sadia answered a large number of questions.

She emphasized that everyone present had some talent within him or her: what was now needed was that that person should have a vision, should have the courage to implement that vision, and should have the right communication to reach the audience. The environment around us was volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) but we still needed to plan better.

How can one plan one’s career? Ms Sadia gave an example of how she forged her own career, starting with door to door selling on behalf of Electrolux, from where she learnt the importance of building trust and establishing need. Then she worked in pharma, at Nestle and at Pepsi, learning new skills in the process. At Fatima she was able to put her knowledge to practice by initiating change management. Her advice to the young MBAs was to focus first on their attitude.

Once they join an organization, they have to develop their personal brands. Also refrain from indulging in negativity: focus on creating value. A better approach would be to understand one’s boss: What does he want? How can one help one’s boss in making his work easier? How can one add value? “Do not be aggressive. Be assertive. Do not react. Respond after having thought through.”

If an MBA graduate, while working, felt that he or she lacked in some skill – numbers, Excel, software etc. – all he or she had to do was get some help, even tuition, and remove his or her weaknesses before these turn into failures.

In response to a question on job switching, she noted that when one switched jobs, one should ask oneself about the new company “Is the new company complex enough to teach me something new and of value?” While switching, one need not “unlearn” one’s core values; but one should be ready to adapt to the new “workstyles”.

Regarding HR, Ms Sadia’s view was that over the last few decades, HR has experienced a tremendous change in its ethos and function as it has moved far away from helping the line managers to hire employees to sitting at the strategy table. The MBA candidates from all the sections asked a large number of probing questions which Ms Sadia responded to with precision, candidness and experience.
