Dr. Arfa Brings Nearly 55 Years of Experience in Education to Iqra University 

Karachi, July 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Iqra University welcomes Prof. Dr. Arfa Sayeda Zehra as Professor Emerita. Dr. Arfa is a distinguished educationist who has been contributing to the field of education, arts and literature, and human development for more than half a century.

Dr. Arfa has a Doctorate in History from University of Hawaii, U.S.A. after being selected for the prestigious East West Center Fellowship Award. Her specialization is in Intellectual History and South Asian Literature.

“Her exemplary efforts to create a society that values and practices human rights, gender equality, and freedom of thought are laudable,” said Dr. Wasim Qazi, Vice Chancellor, and Iqra University.

Dr. Arfa stated,

Dr Arfa as complementing her brilliant academic career started her teaching in Lahore College for Women, Lahore where she rose to the position of Principal. Later she served as Principal, Government College for Women Gulberg, Lahore.

She is on the visiting faculty of National College of Arts (NCA), National Institute of Management and National School of Public Policy, Government of Pakistan. She has been the visiting faculty member of Lahore University of Management Sciences.

She has also served as member Punjab Public Service Commission and Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan. She has been Chairperson National Commission on the Status of Women, Government of Pakistan.

Dr. Arfa has served on the Board of Governors, Punjab University, Government College Lahore, Punjab Arts Council and Punjab Red Crescent. She is the member of Board of Governors Quaid-e-Azam Library and Punjab Public Library, Lahore. She serves as a Director to the Board of Directors Punjab Rural Support Program.

Dr. Arfa has a passion for Urdu Literature and Intellectual History; she continues her writings and deliberations on literary criticism, cultural analysis and historical review. She is a speaker of note and a social nationalist and has been invited to very prestigious institutions nationally and internationally including United Nations and the Brookings Institutions, U.S.A.

She was honoured to receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from East West Center, Hawaii, USA. She is a recipient of Fatima Jinnah Award and International Sophist Award. Presently, she has the honor of holding UNESCO Chair, as well as being a Fellow in National College of Arts. Lahore. She received an International Award in Emirates for her contribution towards national literature, language and culture of Pakistan.

Dr. Arfa is an asset to the nation, and her presence at Iqra University will be a significant step in advancing education, knowledge, and skills in the proper path for the greater good of the community at large.

Muhammad Zubair Motiwala Joins Iqra University 

Karachi, July 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Mr. Muhammad Zubair Motiwala has joined Iqra University as a Professor of Practice. Mr. Motiwala is a well-known industrialist, businessman, and social worker. He is the founding chairman of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI), managing director of Diamond Textile (Pvt.) Ltd, chairman of the Businessmen Group (BMG), and director of Motiwala Industries.

Mr. Motiwala is a notable industrialist who has significantly contributed to the nation’s economic growth, particularly by supporting industrialization. Throughout his successful career, he has represented the business community in different capacities as one of the most renowned representatives of the industrial sector.

He served as the Chairman of the Sindh Board of Investment from July 2011 till October 2013. He was the Investment Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sindh from January 2009 to July 2011. He was Chief Minister Sindh’s Special Assistant for Business Affairs from September 2012 to March 2013.

He was elected Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industries president in March 2012. He held the position of chairman for both Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) and Thar Power Company. He serves as a member of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB).

Mr. Motiwala was chosen president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 2000-2001. Due to his extraordinary abilities and passion for the textile industry, he has been elected as the Chairman of the All Pakistan Textile Processing Mills Association concurrently. “I am grateful to the chancellor and vice chancellor of Iqra University for giving me this opportunity. InshAllah, I intend to do justice with the honour that is given to Me.”, said Mr. Motiwala.

In 1996, he was appointed a member of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Textile and Exports. In 1996-97, he was elected Chairman of SITE Association of Industry, which represents Pakistan’s largest industrial sector. During 1997-1998, he also represented the industrial sector as chairman of the Council of Karachi Industrial Associations. He is the chairman of the Sindh Entrepreneur Development Fund, which promotes value-added industries for Sindh’s agro-products, and under his direction, a number of successful businesses have been established.

He has been the Director on the board of various public and private organization with include workers welfare funds, Karachi Electric Supply Corporation, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, Sindh Industrial Trading Estate, SITE, Export Processing Zone Authority, IBA Karachi, Ziauddin Medical University, National Bank of Pakistan, College of Business Management, Hamdard University, Sir Syed University of Engineering, Pak Oman Investment Company Ltd, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youths Development Programme and Technology and Baqai Medical College Hospital.

Mr. Motiwala is a member of the advisory boards of the IT and Telecom Division, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan; Karachi Electric Supply Corporation; and the Federal Tax Ombudsman. In November 2009, he was nominated as a member of the Board of Directors of the “Sindh Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (SPPRA).

He was appointed as chairman of the Investment Promotion Steering Committee in Sindh in February 2010. He led Pakistani trade delegations to China, the UAE, Russia, Turkey, Malaysia, Singapore, and Korea in order to promote investment in Sindh province. He holds the position of Honorary Consul General for the Republic of Burundi. Mr. Zubair Motiwala is an asset to the country, and his presence at Iqra University will advance education, knowledge, and skills in the right direction for the better good of the community as a whole.

Iqra University Launches First Annual HR Symposium

Karachi, September 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):Iqra University (IU) held its first annual HR Symposium on Tuesday at its main campus in Karachi. The event attracted more than 150 HR professionals. It included speakers and panellists from Unilever, Bank Al-Habib, Siemens, Dolmen Group, K-Electric and Martin Dow Limited.

Dr Wasim Qazi, the Vice-Chancellor of Iqra University, kicked off the event with an energetic and engaging welcome address. He reminded the audience about some of the reforms Iqra University is bringing to its HR curriculum.

“Here at Iqra University, we realise the hypercompetitive nature of the modern business environment. That is why we have launched this symposium so that HR professionals across industries can interact and network with their peers. It offers a forum for the Pakistani HR industry to discuss best practices and the right organisational tools for continued success”, said Dr Wasim Qazi.

A panel discussion followed on the topic, ‘Synergy – Building strong bridges’. The panellists examined some of the challenges and opportunities that the Pakistani industry has in developing teams in the workforce.

The symposium delivered two inspiring keynotes speeches. Aamina Siddiqi, Talent and Organisation Manager at Unilever, spoke about the role of Change and Stress Management for the modern workforce. Ali Raza Abidi, Head of Training and Management Development Division, Bank Al-Habib Limited, followed. He spoke on how companies can best implement and analyse their training and development effectiveness.

Iqra University Targets Online Learners 

Karachi, August 16, 2021 (PPI-OT):Iqra University is launching five new online courses accessible to everyone with access to the internet. The courses will be uploaded on the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day. “This is in line with our university’s philosophy of making education inclusive and accessible to everyone,” says Dr Wasim Qazi, the vice-chancellor of Iqra University. “Our online courses are a reflection of that.”

The new courses include photography, storyboarding, art direction, copywriting, and advertising. They will be made available on Udemy, and have been carefully selected and designed to address the growing market demand. Udemy is a leading online platform that hosts courses from around the world. It currently has more than 155 thousand courses in its catalogue, with around 40 million registered learners.

Open online courses have gained popularity in recent years owing to their flexible learning formats. These courses mostly carry video lectures and encourage self-paced learning. The university also offers online continuing education programs for professionals and individuals seeking to advance their careers. They cover different topics relating to media, information technology, banking, and project management.

“Our online courses are aimed at facilitating professionals either looking to advance their careers or switch to a different profession altogether. They are also useful for people wanting to resume their higher studies, including housewives, full-time workers, and business owners,” said Dr Wasim Qazi. McKinsey Global Institute, a leading business and economics research institute, estimates around 375 workers will upgrade skills for their work by 2030.

Iqra University to Create 25,000 Jobs in the Next 10 Years

Karachi, June 22, 2021 (PPI-OT): Iqra University plans to create 25,000 jobs and 2,500 startups in the next 10 years. The university has a fund of half a million dollars in venture capital to assist its student entrepreneurs and young start-ups in growing their businesses.

This announcement was made at a virtual online launch of Iqra University’s Business Incubation Centre held on Saturday. The inauguration saw panel discussions about the challenges young entrepreneurship face including copyrights, seed financing and the importance of venture capital investors for pioneers.

“Our Business Incubation Centre’s vision is to change the lives of people. By supporting young businesses through their early and fragile stages of growth, we believe that our fund, as well as our technical expertise and physical facilities, will create a domino effect on the incubation and startup space,” said Dr Wasim Qazi, the vice-chancellor of Iqra University.

Panellists at the launch event included Zouhair Khaliq, member of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on IT and Telecom; Jehan Ara, founder and CEO Katalyst Lab; Asim Sheryar, CEO Ignite, Misbah Naqvi, co-founder Invest 2 Innovate; Omer Ghani, head of commercialization and startups HEC; Omer Abedin, director National Incubation Centre; and Zeeshan Hasib Baig, CEO Careem.

“The Incubation Centre is going to be working at the very intersection of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. Pakistan has a creative and entrepreneurial youth that needs to flourish. We plan to be there for just that, by helping our youth improve their skills, increase their access to finance and markets, and foster their sustainable growth,” said Dr Wasim Qazi. According to a 2019 global entrepreneurship survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan, 55% of people from Pakistan agreed that there were good opportunities for starting a business in their area.
