Game-Changing Skills to Learn in 2023. An Opinion by IoBM’s CTO Dr. Imran Batada

Karachi, January 04, 2023 (PPI-OT):Whether a professional or a student, gaining technical skills can significantly boost your career, there are exciting opportunities for tech professionals based on the latest trends. New skills can help you attain job satisfaction, security, and earnings.

What thrived well three years ago may already be outdated by now. In 2023, people ought to learn the skills that will make them more well-informed about the latest technologies. First, data storytelling and data communication are key skills with great potential. Organisations must work with data through collection, processing, preparation, visualisation, analysis, interpretation, and storytelling.

Data storytelling is an interesting skill, especially if you have a background in data science or are interested in it. It is estimated that by 2025, around 70% of jobs will involve directly working with data. Data storytellers will use data visualisation tools to convey the data interestingly.

Second, cybersecurity is a key technical skill that can benefit many individuals. Cyber-attacks and data breaches pose a huge threat to many businesses, especially with remote working. Company data can also be compromised, leading to huge financial losses. Similarly, customer data breaches can make people lose trust in the specific company. Most companies actively seek cybersecurity experts to join their teams for more security.

These experts will be in high demand in 2023 and afterward, with an increase in technological advancement. Cybersecurity experts must know how to manage sensitive data, cloud migrations, and protect IT infrastructure.

Third, machine learning and artificial intelligence have significantly evolved with new technologies built on them. The recent invention of ChatGPT through AI has sparked mixed reactions. Individuals can ask the bot any question and get a relevant answer as long as the question is morally acceptable.

Machine learning is also being used widely to build great technologies. Therefore, if people want to dive into it, they can consider gaining domain knowledge, programming languages, and predictive and data analysis. Updating AI and ML skills can be game-changers in 2023.

Fourth, user experience (UX) design skills will be crucial in 2023. Digital transformation has resulted in high demand for UX designers who can make the technology user-friendly. This includes websites and apps. UX designers make it easier for people to use certain applications.

Like front-end developers, they ensure that the front (visible) side of mobile and web applications is easy to operate. For example, if people are facing a loss in their online store sales, they can consult a UX designer to make their websites much easier to use. If the add-to-cart button is hard to find, it will become hard for customers to make purchases.

While acquiring this skill, people need to do enough market and audience research, imagine different user personas, design wireframes, and conduct testing. People also need to know programming languages to play around with the code.

Fifth, cloud computing skills are really important to gain. Gartner forecasts that global cloud spending will reach $590 billion in 2023. Most companies consider cloud migration to ensure that all their data is well backed up.

Remote working has also increased the need for cloud computing experts. People will need to gain knowledge of SQL, Linux, database management, AI, ML, and cloud technologies if they are interested in cloud computing. Therefore, if people are thinking of improving their skills, cloud computing should be something on their minds based on their interests.

Sixth, the demand for digital marketing skills is growing rapidly. The rise of online stores, digital products, print-on-demand, drop-shipping, and other digital modes has created a thriving market for digital marketers.

This skill will help people capture the attention of customers and potential customers to convince them why product A is better than product B. Other marketing modes like social media advertising, influencer campaigns, search engine optimisation, and email marketing are equally great and can help any firm.

A digital marketer must have enough skills to promote products correctly. Marketing plays a huge role in the success of companies and should be given sufficient attention. For those interested in the marketing field, digital marketing is the way to go.

Seventh, learning more about DevOps is equally important. This field of study helps people learn more about practices and tools that integrate software development and operations teams to shorten the development cycle.

Therefore, it requires knowledge of Python, PHP, PERL, and Java. Learning DevOps requires regular integration, testing, and delivery. In as much as DevOps is technical, it requires soft skills like communication and collaboration. Therefore, it is important to be sure of the kind of skills you would want to learn before deciding to be a DevOps professional.

Eighth, product management skills are also important to learn. Product managers have a vital role in launching and managing successful tech products, the workforce, and shows. Product managers must also have some technical background and great soft skills such as negotiation, persuasion, empathy, and good leadership skills. It is crucial to have a product manager who will play a big role in ensuring that the launched products reach the target customers or market on time.

Ninth, software development skills are important to learn. Such professionals should be well-versed in JavaScript, Python, Go, Java, Flutter, PHP, Swift, R, Ruby, C, and C++. Software developers help reduce repetitive tasks by providing programs that users or staff can use to perform certain tasks in a company.

Tenth, blockchain knowledge is crucial. The famous bit coin is a product of blockchain technology. Blockchain is a data set characterised as a decentralised public record. The effects of blockchain in finance are set to be critical. It is estimated that 10% of the global GDP will be put away by blockchain by 2027.

This shows this new technology’s potential; it can also be used in recruiting by looking at qualifications and work history. Blockchain records information in a manner that makes it hard for anyone to hack the system or even alter it. Additionally, blockchain can boost security, efficiency, traceability, costs, and speed.

All these skills are crucial in 2023. People should put enough effort into ensuring they meet the right requirements to get hired by different companies. Whether you are a tech professional or interested in joining the field, these skills can be a game changer.

The Future of Human Work. An Opinion by IoBM’s CTO Dr. Imran Batada

Karachi, December 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):ChatGPT was just launched recently on November 30, 2022, and has gained a lot of popularity. In just five days, it got over one million users. This is compared to Facebook which took 10 months to reach over a million users. This shows how many people rushed to go use the ChatGPT tool, which is an artificial intelligence chatbot software that can write codes, poems, essays, and much more. So: would that be the future of content writing?

AI continues to grow with each passing day. You just need to type a question or task in the tool, and it will give the right response based on the assignment. Before its launch, it had been properly trained to answer any query. ChatGPT is just like humans, and generates answers just like a natural language. You can easily mistake the tasks done by the tool as those done by a human. You can ask the ChatGPT AI tool to do anything for you. The tool can be used to boost human productivity in different sectors.

However, in as much as the tool is reliable it doesn’t have a way to verify whether what it has generated is true or not. However, it interacts in such an amazing conversational way that makes it appealing to most people. Even with the fear that it may take up some tasks done by humans, technology will grow and open up opportunities for people in other ways.

The beauty of this AI tool is that it doesn’t answer illegal questions like how to smuggle drugs or how to steal’, etc. Therefore, it was still made ethically for the sake of the users, and answers questions that are beneficial and not destructive. It is like talking to Alexa who is a phone assistant. ChatGPT is a great tool that can also work like Google Search by providing relevant simplified information based on queries.

However, the ChatGPT AI tool – while amazing – has a problem in fixing the issue of when it provides wrong answers. The training of the AI tool to decline some questions makes it not answer some questions to which it has answers.

During the tool’s training, trainers played both sides, the user and the AI assistant. This was to ensure that it functioned perfectly. It is a unique kind of chatbot in that it remembers previous prompts from a specific user which makes it viable to be used as a personalized therapist.

However, the AI tool has some limited knowledge of some events that have occurred and is therefore unable to provide relevant information. The training data may also suffer from algorithmic bias in which it would provide vague responses to things without really having the facts.

ChatGPT can produce impressively detailed text that can be used even in essays. However, this may not be readily accepted in academics as it can be termed as cheating. This can even affect the demand for knowledge workers.

Work that would have taken a whole day can be done within 30 minutes or an hour using the tool. Furthermore, most tech investors are pouring billions of dollars into startups specializing in the generative AI field to make it easier for computers to automatically create text, videos, photos, and other media.

Ideally, most web3 developers are shifting their attention from NFTs and crypto to open-source generative AI initiatives. ChatGPT was trained on a large amount of text data and learnt to recognize patterns that allow it to mimic different writing styles.

Open AI isn’t so elaborate on what they used to train their model but used web content, Wikipedia, and archived books. It offers some creative responses as compared to other language models made by other AI tech companies. The ChatGPT can even be used to power certain features in digital document software.

One other major challenge is that it is not reliable enough as a decision-making tool for legal research as it might not provide the right facts upfront. Additionally, it can lead to some big disruptions during web searches due to its query answers. If the chatbot continues to grow, Google might need to update its core search technology to remain in demand.

Due to the vast usage of the tool, it shows how people would prefer getting their questions answered upfront without having to query the search engine. Initially, even if people use the tool, they still go to Google to see what the results are.

At the moment, ChatGPT is free to use but, with time, the founders might need to monetize it. ChatGPT writes better than most students, and it can easily threaten human learning. Just like the calculator that helps in the calculation, the tool may help in content development.

ChatGPT is also doing great work in programming code. It even retraces steps humans have taken and offers advice that can be helpful to developers while doing their work. Surprisingly, it allows even users to write website code using the React tool and even parse regular expressions.

It’s like having a programming tutor. ChatGPT gives you a straight answer based on your query, while Google supplies suggested answers to questions and links to websites that seem relevant.

ChatGPT is a great AI tool that everyone can use – from students to professionals. It can be useful if you have limited time to do certain tasks. The development of AI tools is making people think out of the box about the kind of technologies that can boost workload and lessen repetitive tasks. At the end of the day, advanced technologies will ensure the growth of the world. The writer is CTO and director, Centre of Information Technology at IoBM.
