Beaconhouse students’ Art Exhibition helps raise funds for play area at the Children’s Hospital, Faisalabad

Faisalabad, May 10, 2022 (PPI-OT):Beaconhouse, Pakistan’s largest network of private educational institutions, has recently helped set up a community play area at the Children’s Hospital, Faisalabad. Funds for this play area were raised from an Art Exhibition, themed ‘A Brush Can Change Everything’, held at Beaconhouse Kindergarten Branch, Faisalabad, as a charity initiative.

The aim of the Art Exhibition was to hold a fund-raising activity at the school with the help of young students’ artwork, while showcasing their creative skills and learning. Artwork created by the students of Beaconhouse Kindergarten Branch, Faisalabad was sold to parents, teachers, and other stakeholders and attendees during the exhibition, which helped raise a total of Rs. 600,000. The collected amount was then used to collaborate with the Children’s Hospital in Faisalabad to inaugurate a play area at the medical facility for its young patients. Inspiration for the project was taken from the Beaconhouse funded recreational and play facilities at Children’s Hospital Lahore inaugurated in 2017, which includes an aviary.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the play area, Kasim Kasuri, Chief Executive of Beaconhouse, stated, “At Beaconhouse, we encourage our students to act as Dignity Ambassadors and community helpers, in order to inspire within them the core values of self-worth, charity, and the spirit of giving. I am proud of our students, their parents, teachers, and everyone else from the Beaconhouse team, who came together and helped execute this noble endeavour. I would also like to thank the team at the Children’s Hospital for their support with designating ample space at their vicinity, helping us make this possible.”

The play area at the Children’s Hospital features bright, pleasing colours to lift up spirits, and is complete with a variety of swings, trampolines, and play mats for the children’s entertainment during dreary hospital visits. The organisation was established in 1975 and has been showcasing educational expertise ever since, with a current student strength of over 315,000 across Pakistan.

Beaconhouse saves 3,083 tonnes in carbon emissions, from successfully running 40 facilities on solar energy

Lahore, April 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):Beaconhouse Group, Pakistan’s largest network of private educational institutions and a host of diverse businesses, is successfully running 40 of the network’s facilities on solar energy. Students of 26 Beaconhouse campuses that have been installed with solar panels also conducted research projects on solar energy’s impact on reducing harmful air pollution, use of non-renewable energy, and cutting electricity costs.

The grade 8 student research projects explored significant controllable factors that improve the performance of photovoltaic panels, and saw participation from approximately 1,800 students. This announcement commemorates International Earth Day 2022, aimed at raising awareness on protecting the planet, reducing our carbon footprint, and adopting sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices.

Installed by Beacon Energy Ltd. (BEL), a venture of the Beaconhouse Group creating renewable energy sources, the solar panels installed at schools and other buildings under Beaconhouse have altogether achieved a carbon offset of 3,083 Tonnes in the past two years. This significant reduction in carbon emissions is equivalent to the impact created by a plantation of more than 6,200 trees.

As commented by Nassir Kasuri, Executive Director at Beaconhouse, and Chief Executive Officer of BEL, “Coupled with rapid population growth and urbanization, Pakistan’s per capita CO2 emissions stood at 1.06 trillion[1] in 2020, which has been an exponential increase as compared to 20 years ago. Already in the top ten2 of most impacted countries by climate change, it is imperative that Pakistan adopts an approach that balances sustainability with the needs of our rapidly increasing population. At Beaconhouse, as a socially responsible organization, we take mitigating the impacts of climate change as a top priority and are constantly implementing sustainable practices and policies to reduce our carbon footprint in every day operations.”

To limit the use of non-renewable energy, BEL is working towards increasing the use of photovoltaic solar panels in Pakistan’s energy mix, which is a novel technology with a low unit cost and a very low carbon footprint. With the installation of these solar panels across multiple institutions of Beaconhouse network, the organization is becoming a catalyst for positive change while investing in sustainable and responsible business practices.

Beaconhouse’s 14th School of Tomorrow conference: ‘Towards Happier Futures’ successfully concludes

Lahore, November 09, 2021 (PPI-OT):Beaconhouse, the country’s largest network of private educational institutions, has successfully concluded the 14th edition of its flagship ‘School of Tomorrow’ (SOT) conferences, themed ‘Towards Happier Futures’. The two-day virtual conference brimmed with multiple insightful discussions with over 50 global and local thought leaders in education, healthcare, athletics, and social and environmental development.

Focused on current and future educational standards, the opening session of the SOT conference featured a live discussion on the Single National Curriculum (SNC) and its progress, with the presence of Dr. Mariam Chughtai, Project Director at the National Curriculum Council and prominent leaders from private schools and publishers in Pakistan.

Valuable insights were delivered on the SNC, and whether the one-education-for-all approach suits the prevailing needs and educational setup of the country. “Whilst the content for a Single National Curriculum is being developed, its implementation lies with the provincial textbook boards, each of whom has a different interpretation of the curriculum,” shared Arshad Hussain, Managing Director, Oxford University Press. Dr. Mariam Chughtai on the other hand stated, “The National Curriculum Council has managed to achieve core standards for education in a very short time, and while there is no denying of problems in implementation of the SNC, streamlining it requires time.”

Eleven panel discussions were held, along with two workshops over two days. These talks revolved around creating a better future for the generations to come, with improved educational structures, ways to battle the impact Covid-19 has had on education, a focus on safer climate, the role parenting styles, media, and education play in developing a future, revival of sports post-pandemic, and child labour.

A prominent session titled, ‘The Power of Learner Agency – Curiosity, Creativity, and Innovation’, hosted by Ian Riley, School Head DHA at TNS Beaconhouse, featured students from the Beaconhouse network and their efforts to cultivate initiatives and tackle challenges in order to become agents in their learning. The session showcased social initiatives led by the empowered students, including the TNS Monologue Slam’s participation in the World Monologue Games, Project Agaahi to promote adult literacy, and research and awareness on responsible consumption and production.

Another session moderated by popular TV anchor Sidra Iqbal revolved around the gender misbalance in society, harassment and consent, women’s rights and delayed justice in Pakistan. The discussion included social activist Neelam Hussain, Fauzia Waqar, Chairperson of the Punjab Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW), and Nida Usman, Founder of Women in Law, Pakistan. “Gender roles are intergenerational and have been transmitted down over centuries; unlearning needs to happen at a young age for all. Boys and girls growing up in the same house grow up with different sets of rules, and the role of education, parenting, and media is crucial in mitigating this lack of balance,” was an opinion shared during the insightful conversation.

The 14th SOT conference included prominent leaders including Drew Perkins, Director, Professional Development at TeachThought; senior journalist James Dorsey; popular sports anchor Zainab Abbas, Edward Davis, Head of Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund; Mehnaz Rehman, Director Aurat Foundation; Bronwyn Jacobs, Educationist and Media Journalist from China, and others.

The SOT was initiated by Beaconhouse as a series of events to support the institution’s quest to redefine education in Pakistan. The Beaconhouse Group holds a legacy of 45 years of educational expertise and currently has over 315,000 students enrolled full-time across more than 190 private school branches in eight countries. This year’s conference was sponsored by United Bank Ltd. (UBL).
