10th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 10-12 Feb 2023, Astana, Kazakhstan 

Lahore, February 06, 2023 (PPI-OT):10th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships is scheduled from 10-12 Feb 2023 at Astana, Kazakhstan. In this regard it gives me immense pleasure to inform that following athletes and coach of AFP will participate in this important competition:

1. Shajar Abbas – Athlete (60m)

2. Sharoz Khan -do- (High Jump)

3. Muhammad Imran -do- (High Jump)

4. Uzair Rehman -do- (400m)

5. Jaffar Ashraf -do- (Pole Vault)

6. Qazi Tanveer Hussain – Team Manager / Coach

The above mentioned Athletics Team will depart from Islamabad on 7 Feb 2023 at 1pm and return to Pakistan on 13 Feb2023. All Asian countries are participating in these championships.

It further apprised that Athletics Federation of Pakistan and Aitchison Collage Lahore are organizing 1st Aitchison Half Marathon at Aitchison Collage Lahore on 18 Feb 2023.

Athletes (Men) from the affiliated units of AFP i.e. of Army, WAPDA, Railways, HEC, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Islamabad, AJ and K, Police and Gilgit Baltistan and student-athletes of Aitchison College will participate in the competition.

Cash prizes will be awarded to elite winners athletes up to 14th position as detailed below:

Annual General Council Meeting of Athletics Federation of Pakistan 

Lahore, December 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):It gives me immense pleasure to inform that Annual General Council Meeting of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) was held online on 29 Dec 2022 under the chairmanship of Maj Gen (R) Muhammad Akram Sahi HI(M), SI(M), President AFP/ Vice President Asian Athletics Association (AAA).

Representatives from affiliated Units of AFP attended the meeting. Following agenda points were discussed during the meeting.

1. The House appreciated the organization of NACs by Punjab Athletics Association and the cooperation of Sports Board Punjab, Punjab University and WAPDA Sports Board.

2. It was decided that the 51st National Athletics Championship will be organized by the Pakistan Army in Feb/March 2023.

3. It was decided that the 5th National Youth and Junior Athletics Championship will be organized by Islamabad Athletics Association. Dates and venue will be announced later.

4. It was decided that talent competitions will be organized for youth and junior players in different places of the country.

5. It was decided that Kids Athletics competitions will be organised with the support of Provincial Athletics Associations and Area Associations to promote the athletics at grass root level.

6. The House was informed about the treatment and training of Mr. Arshad Nadeem (Javelin Thrower). President AFP told the House that Arshad’s injuries have been treated and he is healthy and our focus is on his training so that he can perform well in the upcoming mega competitions.

7. Annual Calendar of National and International Events of Athletics was discussed and approved by the participants of meeting.

AFP sends Arshad Nadeem for treatment in the UK 

Lahore, December 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):It is informed that Javelin Throw star sensation of Pakistan Arshad Nadeem left for the UK last Wednesday by Emirates Airlines from Lahore for treatment of his injured elbow and knee joint. The chronic right elbow injury has created major problems for him during the throwing action of the Javelin during training and in competitions. AFP has arranged for Arshad to be treated at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital in the UK. A two-member team of Doctors headed by Dr. Ali Bajwa will perform treatment procedures on Saturday on the right elbow and left knee of the stalwart.

After a 10-day rehabilitation and physiotherapy period, Arshad is expected to return home on the 12th of December 2022. It will further take 4 to 6 weeks for him to make a full recovery and return to his regular training routine. Arshad has asked his fans to pray for his health and quick recovery after treatment.

50th National Athletics Championships (Men / Women) at Lahore 2022 

Lahore, November 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):50th National Athletics Championships (Men and Women) was organized by the Athletics Federation of Pakistan with the collaboration of Sports Board Punjab and Punjab Athletics Association from 25th to 27th Nov 2022 at Punjab Stadium, Lahore. All the affiliated units of Athletics Federation of Pakistan i.e. Army, Navy, Airforce, WAPDA, HEC, Railways, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, Islamabad, AJK, Gilgit Baltistan participated in the 3 days extravaganza. More than 500 athletes participated the event.

Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfraz, Provincial Minister of Punjab for Higher Education and Information Technology was the Chief Guest of Opening Ceremony held on 25/11/2022.

On the final day, Maj. Gen (R) Muhammad Akram Sahi, HI(M), SI(M), President Athletics of Pakistan was the Chief Guest and awarded trophies to the winning teams and distributed Medals and cash prizes amongst Winners.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Lahore, August 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):In a colourful and impressive ceremony held today at Nishtar Park Lahore, the Sports Board Punjab honoured the men and women of the province for their achievements in the field of sports. The Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Parvaiz Elahi was the chief guest on this occasion and presented trophies and cash awards to the recipients of these prestigious awards.

The lifetime achievement award was bestowed upon Gen (R) Muhammad Akram Sahi President Athletics Federation of Pakistan for his meritorious and outstanding services rendered for the cause of Athletics in Pakistan. During his tenure as President AFP Pakistan has produced some World class athletes like Arshad Nadeem, Shajar Abbas, Sharoz Khan, Abdul Moeed Baloch and a number of other prominent athletes who gave noteworthy and record-breaking performances at the National and Asian levels. Pakistan reappeared on the Athletics Gold medal table of the Commonwealth Games after an absence of 50 years.

The Chief Minister Punjab paid rich tributes to the achievements of AFP and requested Gen Sahi to guide the Government of Punjab in the development of its future sports programs. The sensational Arshad Nadeem winner and record holder in the Javelin throw event of the Commonwealth Games Birmingham, 2022 was awarded a cash prize of Rupees Two million.

A posthumous achievement award was also presented to (late) Subedar Abdul Khaliq who created an Asian record and twice won the 100 meters’ event at the Asian Games held in 1958 and 1962. The award was received by his son Muhammad Ijaz who was also a national athlete himself.

The management and members of Athletics Federation of Pakistan wish to congratulate all the recipients of these awards and prizes. We would also like to thank the Sports Board Punjab for honouring the heroes and legends of sports in Pakistan and hope that this event will become a yearly occurrence.
