Gilgit, November 11, 2022 (PPI-OT):A study visit of BS-III students was arranged by Department of Forestry, Range and Wildlife Management, Karakoram International University (KIU) to Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) at Gilgit Airport on October 13, 2022.
Two faculty members i.e.; Dr. Ahmad Hussain, Assistant Professor and Dr. Ishrat Roomi, Lecturer, accompanied the students. The purpose of this visit was the exposure of students for practical learning on weather station, instruments and tools and measurement of various parameters like precipitation, humidity, air pressure, temperature, wind velocity and snow fall and recording data in watershed areas of Gilgit Baltistan.
Dr. Farrukh Bashir, Director, RMC, Gilgit-Baltistan welcomed the students and faculty and took all to the station area. He showed various instruments and tools at weather station and briefed all the participants about their purpose and their usage. In Observatory / Recording Rooms at Met-station, Mr. Aslam and Usman, two senior professionals with relevant experience and expertise in met data interpretation, also explained to the students how met data is plotted and recorded.
Dr. Farrukh Bashir said that among more than hundred Meteorological Stations in Pakistan, RMC in Gilgit-Baltistan is a major Met-Station with capability for recording and compiling met data of sub regional met stations like Skardu, Astore, Chillas, Babusar Top, Gupis, etc.
Met-Data collected from these met stations is compiled every three hours and forwarded to Meet Station at Karachi for further World Weather Forecasting Agency. RMC Gilgit renders Provincial District Weather forecast and warning to general public and media and also provides aviation met services for Gilgit and Skardu airports.
Weather warnings are also issued time to time and a booklet was shown to students about formulas and code words used in met safety. At the end, two representatives from students thanked the Director RMC and his team for briefing and facilitating the students in all possible ways.
