Sensitizing the youth on prevention from diabetes and hypertension

Lahore, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):Diabetes is one of the most serious public health concerns, especially in developing countries where the healthcare sector is under-facilitated. Health experts attribute the wide prevalence of this disease in countries like Pakistan to dietary changes, the effects of urbanization, and the adoption of a more inactive lifestyle by a significant number of people.

In response to this public health challenge, The University of Lahore and the Government of Punjab through its Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department (P and SHD) jointly conducted an awareness seminar on the causes and preventive measures of diabetes and hypertension in youth. The event was organized under the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases Program.

Dr. Sadia Salman (Endocrinologist) gave a detailed presentation on diabetes and hypertension in youth and their prevention. According to her, hypertension, often occurs alongside diabetes and obesity. She cited excessive thirst and hunger, frequent need to urinate, extreme fatigue, blurred vision, and delayed wound healing as common symptoms of diabetes. “Through regular glucose tests, one easily detects this illness and many diseases are controllable and curable in their early stages.” She observed.

During the seminar, Dr. Salman linked diabetes and hypertension. “Diabetes and hypertension often occur together and may share some common causes which may include sedentary lifestyle with excessive calorie intake, obesity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance.” She added.

She said that maintaining a healthy weight, physical activity, sticking to a healthy diet, abstinence from alcohol consumption, and smoking are effective measures in preventing both illnesses. While sharing his remarks as chief guest, Mr. Asim Raza (Additional Secretary for Vertical Programs, P and SHD) advised the students not to use frizzy drinks and junk foods.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf (Rector, UOL), Dr. Zahid Pervaiz (MS, ULTH), Dr. Syed Amir Gilani (Pro-Rector, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences-UOL), Ms Sana Abrar (Head of Event Management Cell-UOL), faculty members and students partook in this informative session. The event also attracted many other officials from P and SHD who accompanied the chief guest.
