Islamabad, November 06, 2019 (PPI-OT): Department of Management and Social Sciences organized a seminar “Mind Body Connection” under the supervision of Ms. Rabia Habib. The guest Speaker, Lt. Col. Muhammad Tariq is Psychiatrist at C.M.H. Jhelum. The guest speaker discussed various emotional states such as sadness, joy, or anger, physiological sensations which occur in different areas of our body. Scientists have created maps of emotions, showing areas of the body that are activated when individual experience different emotions. This connection is multidirectional. Emotional experiences affect the way we behave and the physiology within our body.
Lt. Col. Muhammad Tariq further elaborated that if we do not explore and deal with these painful emotions, they can create an underlying sense of anxiety, depression, or anger which can physically disrupt the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Emotional suffering, physical pain, and other sensations share similarities in their neural pathways. For example, feelings of anger or insecurity can disrupt the regular beating of the heart and the calm flow of the breath. This further activates the sympathetic nervous system in the similar way as when we are facing a threat, creating an even greater sense of unease and pain.
The purpose of the seminar was to create awareness of the connection between mind and body. The primary aspect, scrutinized by the guest speaker was how students can prepare themselves for the challenges in life, how they can compete in life and develop skills to improve social behaviour. At the end of the seminar, souvenir was presented to the guest speaker, Lt. Col. Muhammad Tariq.
