Research and development in mathematical education

Karachi, August 12, 2020 (PPI-OT): Professor Anjum Halai has been elected to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, a worldwide organization devoted to research and development in mathematical education. Professor Halai will serve as a vice president on the Executive Committee for a four-year term from January 1, 2021.

Regional vice provost and newly appointed as the dean of AKU’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Professor Halai has over 20 years of experience in teaching, research and service in mathematical education. Most of her experience has largely been in low-income countries such as Pakistan, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

Commenting on her plans for the new position, she said: “I hope to build strategic linkages between global platforms and local networks and communities. The plan is to develop initiatives to promote the exchange of ideas on all aspects of the theory and practice of mathematics education. This is one of the ways to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning, especially in disadvantaged classrooms in low-income-countries.” In September 2014, she led the ICMI’s Fourth Capacity and Network Project (CANP4) held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
