Quality higher education alone can transform Pakistan into a modern nation state: Minister Shah

Jamshoro, March 10, 2019 (PPI-OT): An impressive ceremony of Academic Convocation 2016 was held at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Convention Centre, Allama I.I. Kazi Campus, Jamshoro yesterday to confer gold and silver medals and degrees upon successful candidates of PhD, M.S/ M. Phil., Master and Bachelor degree programs. As many as 46 scholars were conferred with PhD degrees, whereas, 113were awarded with M.S/ M.Phil degrees in addition to 636 Master and Bachelor degree awards.

Besides, 16 candidates were honoured with Chancellor’s Gold Medal on account of clinching top ranks within their respective faculties and 88 were decorated with Vice-Chancellor’s Silver Medals for standing first in their respective departments/ institutes.

Moreover, gold medals were also awarded on the personae mentioned ahead in the categories of best teacher, best researcher and eminent contributor: Dr. Abdul Ghaffar Bullo, Abdul Razaq Umrani, Zahida Taj Abro, Dr. Kalimullah Lashari, Ashfaq Hussain Memon, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Bhangar, Prof. Dr. Sarfraz Hussain Solangi, Prof. Dr. Imamuddin Khoso, Prof. Dr. Tahira Jabeen, Prof. Dr. Rafiq Ahmed Memon, Prof. Dr. Hakim Ali Qanasiro, Prof. Dr. Saleha Parveen, Dr. Zafar Hussain Ibupoto, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Dayo, Prof. Dr. Hafiz Munir Ahmed Khan, Prof. Dr. Syed Tufail Shah Sheerazi, Dr. Imran Ali Sandano, Muhammad Ali Roshan Pathan and Sajid Qayoom Memon. In addition, Vice Chancellor’s Appreciation Certificates were conferred upon Dr. Nadir Birahmani, Dr. Najma Memon, Dr. Ambreen Shaharyar, Dr. Shakeela Shah, Prof. Dr. Nek Muhammad Shaikh, Prof. Dr. Imdad Ali Ismaili, Prof. Dr. Abdul Sattar Shah, Prof. Dr. Farhat Noreen, Dr. Sumera Umrani, Dr. Nabila Shah Jilani, Dr. Fiza Qureshi, Dr. Ameer Ali Abro, Dr. Mehmood-ul-Hassan Mughal, Prof. Dr. Javed Ahmed Chandio, Dr. Farida Shaikh, Prof. Imran Halepoto, Khalid Meerani, Faisal Zaman Mughal, Javed Ahmed Solangi, Imran Ahmed Abbasi, Ghulam Shabir Bhanbhro and Mumtaz Ali.

Speaking on the occasion, event president Sindh Minister for Education, Culture, Tourism, Antiquities and Pro Chancellor General Universities in Sindh Syed Sardar Ali Shah said that he was delighted to be there that evening amidst the distinguished academics to distribute well-earned and well-deserved degrees and confer gold and silver medals upon the University scholars and graduates. The underlying desire in accepting the invitation was to avail the opportunity of visit his Alma Mater and oldest University of the country, which with its refreshing surroundings and serene beauty provided a pleasant departure from the mundane, day to day exigencies of his responsibilities.

Congratulating the all the recipients of degrees and medals and their proud parents, he said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had a vision and a commitment to transform Pakistan into a modern nation state; a dream and desire which she believed could not materialize without quality higher education and youth empowerment.

Eulogizing the efforts made by SU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Burfat, minister Shah added that an educated populace was vital in the present world, with the convergent impacts of globalization, the increasing importance of knowledge as a main driver of growth as the information and communication revolution had gained greater significance. Besides, knowledge transfer, generation, application and integration had also become major factors in economic development and remained increasingly at the core of any country’s competitive advantage in the global economy; which only quality higher education could cater.

VC-SU Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat in his remarks congratulated the graduates on their success and thanked Syed Sardar Ali Shah for gracing the occasion. He also expressed his deep gratitude to the Chief Minister for earlier grants of Rs. 946 million to strengthening SU Laar Campus Badin and SU Campus Mirpurkhas; and of Rs. 236 million as recurring budget.

Dr. Burfat also made special mention of HEC grant of Rs. 1600 million to University of Sindh. Dr. Burfat expressed pleasure over the fact that 317 SU teachers out of total of 650 had done PhD from most advanced countries of the world, and that SU produced 16 HEC recognized research journals, had so far awarded PhD degrees to more than 1600 scholars, had a current enrolment of 4100 M. Phil. and PhD students.

Dr. Burfat also made special mention of ultra-modern sports facilities being provided to SU students and spoke of SU students’ top positions in sports at national and international level. He also brought to the notice of the audience rapid shift of SU to technological innovations and research on coastal problems.

“I am happy to inform that we are also developing University’s gender policy, youth policy, recruitment policy, health policy, research policy and many other such policies to develop sound and permanent framework to facilitate SU employees and students”,

The vice chancellor congratulated Secretary Convocation Prof. Dr. Sarfaraz Hussain Solangi, all conveners and members of organization committee, faculty, officers and employees for their efforts to turn the event into a sparkling success.

Members Provincial Assembly Sindh Mr. Muhammad Qasim Soomro, Ms. Kulsoom Chandio and Hina Dastageer, Chancellor Isra University, vice chancellors of Sindh public and private universities, pro vice chancellors of SU campuses, deans of all teaching faculties, academic and administrative heads, police and administrative divisional top brass, notables, eminent personalities from different walks of life, SU teachers, officers, employees, parents, families and graduating students participated in the convocation.
