Karachi, January 09, 2019 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Medical Association has categorically rejected the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) ordinance 2019 and said that the ordinance will further prove destructive for medical profession and health care system in Pakistan if not withdrawn. The PMA Centre and its branches have categorically rejected the PMDC ordinance 2019 and demanded of authorities concerned of federal government to withdraw ordinance on immediate basis”.

These reservations were expressed by President PMA Centre Dr Irkam Ahmed Tunio, Sectary General PMA Centre Dr SM Qaisar Sajjad and others in a joint press conference held at PMA House Karachi. Treasurer PMA Centre Dr Qazi Wasiq, General Secretary PMA Sindh Dr Pir Manzoor Ali, President PMA Karachi, Dr Khalil Mukaddam, Chairman, Editorial Board JPMA Dr Jamil Siddiqui and General Secretary PMA Karachi Dr Abdul Ghafoor Shoro were also present.

They said PMA feels perplexed and disappointed to learn about the promulgation of the Presidential Ordinance regarding the PMDC by a person who himself belongs to medical profession. According to this ordinance there will be 17-member council nominated either prime minister of Pakistan or provincial governments, CPSP and Armed Forces.

General Secretary PMA Centre Dr SM Qaisar Sajjad, termed the PMDC ordinance 2019 will destroy the medical education and health care system in the country. He said PMA being the largest stake holder and the only representative organization of the doctors, out rightly rejects this ordinance.

He said one and the big question regarding the ordinance remains to be answered, is that it is in total violation of PMDC Ordinance 1962 in which the composition of the council will be some nominations and rest of the members elected the doctors of the country, so that it could be a representative regulatory body. (Section 3, PMDC Ordinance 1962)

President, PMA Centre Dr Irkam Ahmed Tunio said PMDC ordinance is undemocratic maneuvers from a democratically elected government. He said PMA has always stressed upon to make PMDC an autonomous, independent, transparent, democratic and vibrant body to look after the related issues in a democratic and transparent way.

He said proposed nominated 17 member body will be a continuation of the mess which we are witnessed for decades. In those days PMDC was run by either illegal occupants of the offices or a mafia supported by the big wigs of the country. Ex-Member of PMDC Dr Jamaluddin Sheikh said now it is the time to learn from the history and stop meddling with in this regulatory body and save our future generations from total destruction as far as medical education is concerned.

They vowed that PMA will put all its acts together to stop this useless ordinance to be passed by the both houses of the parliament at every level and requested to the civil society to come forward to raise their voice against this illegal, unconstitutional and destructive ordinance to be enforced in near future. They demanded immediate elections as per constitution of PMDC and elected body should manage the affairs of PMDC as independent, transparent, democratic and vibrant body.
