LUMS Moves Up in International and Regional Rankings

Lahore, July 02, 2022 (PPI-OT):LUMS continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the top universities in the world. The University has moved up 50 places to 201-250 place as announced in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2022. It has improved its position in the coveted QS World University Rankings 2023, and is among the 601-650 top institutions of the world as opposed to 651-700 last year.

Congratulating the LUMS community, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Arshad Ahmad said, “Small universities like LUMS are likely to have a different trajectory of growth since they are agile and adaptable to changing needs. Both these rankings are a recognition of our progress and we welcome them. I wish to congratulate the LUMS community whose dedication and contributions to the University’s aim of academic excellence have led us to achieve global and regional recognition.”

In 2021, the University was ranked 50th ‘World’s Best Small University’ by THE with the added distinction of being the only institution in Pakistan to be on the list. Also, at the THE Awards Asia 2022, LUMS won in the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts category. This category recognises ‘the pioneering work that is taking place in universities to promote the arts’. Sikhvirsa Pakistan, for which LUMS received the award, is a project emerging from a year-long multidisciplinary collaboration between the history and computer science departments at the University. It is a first-of-its-kind website in the region that narrates a visual journey of Sikh culture and history by resurrecting Sikh-period artefacts in the iconic Lahore Fort’s Sikh Gallery through visual data.

The THE Asia University Rankings 2022 use the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions. The universities are judged for teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. These provide a detailed balanced comparison for academics, students, and industry across Asia and beyond and also helps them view the status of different missions and successes of higher education institutions.

Meanwhile, QS or Quacquarelli Symonds University Rankings assess universities from around the world according to six different criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty to student ratio, citations per faculty, ratio of international faculty members and ratio of international students.
With this new QS ranking, LUMS position has also moved up 10 places with regards to the percentile; in the 2023 edition, the University performed among the top 43 per cent according to the QS World University Rankings.

Positioned at 54 globally, the Employment Outcomes is the strongest indicator for LUMS. This is an extension of previous achievements where the QS Graduate Employability Rankings have consistently declared LUMS as the ‘top ranked university in Pakistan.’ With 1,551 recruiting partners, 93 percent of the LUMS undergraduates and 88 per cent of the graduates are employed within six months of graduation.

QS also categorized that LUMS places high importance on research intensity, with a comprehensive subject area focus. This is in line with the University’s vision ‘to become Pakistan’s leading research intensive university, excelling in teaching and driven by a philosophy of ‘Learning Without Borders’.’
