Rawalpindi, January 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):The concept of Security in political discourse has been considerably widened since the late 20th Century and the trend continues in the 21st century as well. Our understanding of security continues to evolve considering that the emerging threats are unique owing to their origins, conceptions and effects and no longer limited to inter-state rivalries as was case during the Cold War. Therefore, in addition to military aspects which have traditionally dominated the security discourse, non-traditional security issues are now being recognized as increasingly important by academics and policy-makers across the world.
This comprehensive understanding of security emphasizes a gravitational shift away from state security towards empowerment and protection of peoples and societies across the world. In a globalized world, the significance of threats emanating from diverse sources and having the ability to transcend state boundaries has increased manifold. Consequently, requiring wide-ranging and multilateral political, economic, social interventions and responses.
The Covid-19 Pandemic is a stark reminder that the nature of threats has transformed and our understanding of issues previously considered peripheral to the notion of security have taken center stage. In addition to this, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Avian Flu pandemics and regular and periodically massive natural disasters add the need to emphasize non-traditional security in an evolving global, regional and national security landscape.
At the national Level, military security continues to feature prominently in Pakistan’s policy making. Conversely, there is no denying that a myriad of non-traditional security threats are severely hampering the country’s prospects for economic growth, prosperity and development and have the possibility of aggravating to existential threats. These include, but are not limited to environmental degradation, natural disasters, food and water insecurity, uncontrolled population growth, gender discrimination, poverty, energy crisis, epidemics, terrorism, cyber-crime and informational security.
Given that globally, the non-traditional security issues have contributed to a greater number of deaths than traditional security issues in the post-Cold War era, it is imperative to integrate these issues within our overall national security paradigm and to engage with relevant stakeholders and partners on an enduring basis to mitigate their effects. It is therefore necessary to have a timely and coordinated approach to address these challenges both at the national and international levels.
In order to highlight these issues, the Department of International Relations, Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi is organizing a three-day international conference on “Evolving Dynamics of Non-traditional Security Issues: National and International Perspectives”. This is an excellent opportunity for emerging scholars (M. Phil and PhD Scholars) to present their research, along with established academicians. Through this initiative, we hope to shed light on the comprehensive issues related to Non-traditional security with national and international perspectives and provide young, aspiring and innovative minds a platform to express their ideas and share their research along with having an opportunity to collaborate with the leading experts of the field.

The conference will be organized around the following themes:
Military Security: maintaining stable borders and ensuring internal stability, military expenditure.
Economic Security amid global pandemic, Globalization, global migration, Brain drain, human resources and development, technology and innovation, income and employment, access to social safety net.
Societal Security: Discrimination, social equality, defence of identity, community identity and social dynamics, migration.
Political Security: Democracy, governance issues, equal political rights and opportunities, Regime stability.
Health Security: Pandemics, impact of Covid19, preparedness for health emergencies, politics of pandemics.
Food and Water Security: Growing population, increasing urbanization, challenges of food production, access to nutrition and food supply, expanding cities and shrinking agricultural farmlands, existing and future famines.
Environmental Security: Climate Change, politics of resources, SDGs, disaster management, ecological processes and natural resources as catalysts of conflict
Extremism and Terrorism: Terrorist insurgencies, counter-terrorism, rising extremism in societies, counter-radicalization.
Gender Security: gender equality, feminism, women rights, violence against women and trans-genders, women empowerment.
Energy Security: Energy adequacy, reliable supply mechanisms, technology development and economic affordability.
Important Deadlines and Guidelines
Submission of Abstracts
Interested authors/presenters are advised to send in their abstracts at ir.conference@fjwu.edu.pk latest by February 10, 2022. Please note that the abstract must be no longer than 350 words.
The authors are requested to please add a brief biographical note (not exceeding 100 words) stating their name(s) and institutional affiliation(s) in the email body.
Submission of Papers
Once an abstract is shortlisted, the author must provide the conference Organizing Committee with full-text of paper by March 15, 2022.
Full text papers must follow submission and presentation guidelines
Submission of Presentation (Slides)
Once their papers have been accepted, the speakers would be expected by the Conference Committee to submit their final presentations (tentatively 10 days prior to the day of the event). The presentations must not exceed 15-20 slides considering that the allocated time slot for each speaker shall be 15-20 minutes.
Originality
Authors must confirm that the submitted work is original, has not appeared in literature in any form in the past and will not be submitted to any other venue concurrently while it is under review at FJWU following the Conference.
Registration Fees
Registration fee for individual presenters outside of FJWU is three thousand (3000) PKR whereas for FJWU presenters, registration fee is One thousand five hundred (1500) PKR.
Only shortlisted presenters, whose abstracts have been accepted need to submit the registration fee not later than 15th March 2022.
