Grooming Session by Macquarie University Held at LUMS

Lahore, December 22, 2015 (PPI-OT): Macquarie University conducted a grooming session on December 17, 2015 at Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL), Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).

Mr. Tanveer Shaheed (Senior Country Manager, Asia) started the session by giving brief introduction of Macquarie University. He told that it is one of the leading Government University in Australia. Macquarie University offers diversified portfolio of courses; Accounting, Media, Social Sciences, and Law to mention a few. It currently has 40,000 students across the world.

Mr. Tanveer then invited Dr. Rahat Muneer (Head of Accounting and Governance Department). Dr. Rahat first talked about “Nurturing Employability, Developing 21 Century Skills”. He explained employability as a skill set, that students are equipped with throughout their academic tenure. Later, he explained how lifestyles, business styles and skill sets are changing. For instance, role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) has changed over years. Now CFO’s are working for more than one company known as “Virtual CFO”. Dr. Rahat also shared his research findings about employer’s perception:

“93% of employers want employees to think critically and solve problems”.

“95% of employers encourage employee’s innovation approach at workplace.”

One of the interesting research finding shared was on how an employee approach will change towards their career progression.

“Employees usually changes 17 jobs, 5 careers and 15 homes in a lifetime.”

Dr. Rahat also emphasized on students having their own LinkedIn accounts to stay connected with employers. He further told that LinkedIn is the largest employer in Australia, 36% of headhunting is done through LinkedIn. He concluded that employers are looking for innovative approach at workplace, motivation and resilience.

In the end he talked about diversity of students at Macquarie University and how they use videos before and after lecture to engage student’s thought out the session. The session concluded with a vibrant question and answer session.
