First Test is a great example of Test cricket’s beauty: Waqar Younis

Kingston, August 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):Bowling Coach Waqar Younis praised the high quality competition in the thrilling first Test between West Indies and Pakistan while addressing a virtual media session with Pakistan media from Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday.

“We would not get a better advertisement for the beauty of Test cricket. Both teams fought very well but unfortunately we didn’t avail some good opportunities at a crucial stage of the match which cost us at the end.”

“The pitch was conducive to seam bowling and our pacers bowled really well. Undoubtedly, It was a low target that we had to defend yet we fought really hard and it was only some dropped catches that took the game away from us.”

Waqar Younis also admired the efforts of his bowlers, “I am very proud of my bowlers. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali bowled brilliantly. I have full confidence on the abilities of Mohammad Abbas. He was very impressive in the match but unfortunately he didn’t get many wickets.” Waqar is also hopeful that Pakistan will stage a better show in the last Test match against the host nation commencing from 20 August.

“We must admire Babar Azam the way he kept his nerves and took some good decisions as captain in the last match.” “Leggie Yasir Shah is a match winner and we are fortunate to have Nauman Ali as a good back-up spinner.” “We will go with a positive mindset in the second game and try to do better.”

There’s only 200 days to go until the WHITE FERNS open the tournament on 4 March 2022 at Tauranga’s beautiful Bay Oval – let’s show them a packed stadium and New Zealanders enjoying the world cup action up close.

Businesses interested in throwing their support behind women’s sport will be able to purchase CWC22 corporate hospitality packages from 6 September.

Cantabrians will also get the chance to catch all eight competing teams in action when the region hosts the CWC22 warm-up week from 27 February to 2 March 2022.

Each team will play two warm-up matches across four days at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln Green and Rangiora Oval, with fans able to attend free of charge.

The official pre-tournament media day, captain’s press conference and all team welcome will also be held in Christchurch.

Canterbury’s hosting of the CWC22 warm-up week matches will provide significant economic value for the region – estimated to be $4.2 million.

This tournament will be the first global women’s cricket event since the T20 World Cup final last year on 8 March, which saw over 86,000 fans turn out at the MCG.

CWC22 Chief Executive Andrea Nelson says she wants as many Kiwi as possible to experience cricket’s pinnacle event.

“When New Zealand last hosted the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup back in 2000, the WHITE FERNS came away with our country’s first and only women’s world title to date. That’s something I’m sure all Kiwi wouldn’t mind seeing again.

“Attending World Cup matches will be very affordable – an action-packed day out for a family will cost from $45* which we think is real value for money,” she says.

The top eight teams in the world will go head-to-head with 31 matches to be played across 31 epic days at six premium venues across New Zealand.

WHITE FERNS captain Sophie Devine says: “As a player, there’s no better feeling than walking out on the pitch to a roaring home crowd.

“It’s been such a buzz to see Wellingtonians come out to support the Blaze and Firebirds at the Basin for the Supersmash and I hope that support continues to grow for women’s cricket as we prepare for the World Cup in our own back yard.”

New Zealand Cricket CEO David White said feeling was running high as the tournament approached: “We’re very excited about the World Cup being staged here next year and I know the cricket community is really looking forward to hosting this party – our first taste of World Cup action since 2015.”

Jayden Seales reprimanded for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Dubai, August 15, 2021 (PPI-OT):West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan in Kingston.

Seales was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Seales, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 70th over of Pakistan’s first innings, after the dismissal of batter Hasan Ali, when Seales used inappropriate language towards Hasan which could have provoked an aggressive reaction from him.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction, which was ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department as per the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. Seales pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Gregory Brathwaite, Joel Wilson, Nigel Duguid and TV umpire Leslie Reifer.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of a fine of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
