Community and Preventive Dentistry organizes a seminar on Community Periodontal Health and Implant Complications

Lahore, February 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):With the aim to discuss community periodontal health and enlighten the young dentists about the peri-implant complications, the Faculty of Community and Preventive Dentistry at the University College of Dentistry arranged a seminar in coordination with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) pharmaceuticals on December 15, 2021 at University College of Dentistry (UCD), The University of Lahore.

Dr. Arooj Ul Hassan (HoD, Community and Preventive Dentistry Department) and Dr. Muhammad Haseeb (Associate Professor, HoD Department of Periodontology) were the key speakers of the seminar that was attended by the house officers and faculty members of Community and Preventive Dentistry and Periodontology Departments.

Dr. Hassan explained the concerns of patients before getting scaling and what misconceptions they might have. He also enumerated the possible reasons for these concerns and the ways to alleviate these misapprehensions by using scientific knowledge. “By listening to the patients and making them feel comfortable and then explaining the details about advantages of scaling, the Dental Health Professional can help the patient understand the need for scaling”, he added.

Dr. Haseeb, with the help of clinical cases explained in detail about the Peri-Implant complications, their causes and ways to minimize those complications. He discussed that implant placement is a relatively complex procedure and there are multiple factors that play specific role in placing a successful implant.

Prof. Dr. Riaz Ahmad Warraich (Principal, University College of Dentistry) applauded both the speakers. He commended them for opening the minds of the young Dentists to both the handling of psychology of the patient and complications related to complex procedures.

The Periodontal Health of an individual is a summary of the overall Dental hygiene of the person. A healthy periodontium usually reflects good oral hygiene with care given to daily oral hygiene practices. Complete oral hygiene practice also involves regular visits to the Dentist.

Periodontology is a field that has come a long way in Pakistan in the past decade. The patients are aware and informed about their oral hygiene requirements more than ever. This awareness also leads to some misinformation about the regular scaling.

Dr. Rabia Akhtar discusses ‘The Impact of U.S. Foreign Policy on Pakistan’

Lahore, February 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):On November 29, 2021, Dr. Rabia Akhtar (Director, Center for Security, Strategy and Policy Research (CSSPR)), was hosted for a talk by the Institute of Graduate Studies, International Aydin University. In her lecture entitled ‘The Impact of U.S. Foreign Policy on Pakistan’, Dr. Akhtar delved into the implications of Washington limiting its engagements with Islamabad and the region after its complete withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Stressing that this pull back must be seen as an opportunity for Pakistan and other regional actors, Dr. Akhtar shed light on how Islamabad and Ankara can reorient, and recalibrate their relations, with a view to leading the broader region towards strategic connectivity both economic and political. She said that both countries have what it takes to assume leadership positions in the region.

For that, she said that it is important for both countries to precipitously improve their bilateral relations. Surveying the current state of their relations, she stressed the need for both countries to center their ties on economics and trade given that both provide each other with vistas of strategic pathways to strengthen ties in the said realms.

Further, Dr. Akhtar explained Pakistan’s foreign policy outlook and challenges, arguing that the simmering situation in Afghanistan and a plethora of threats emanating from a very aggressive, revanchist India pose formidable threats to that country. These multifarious troubles, she argued, can be addressed only if Pakistan continues taking steps towards making its policy framework more robust, dynamic, and forward-looking. She emphasized that, Pakistan’s new foreign policy vision dovetails fittingly with that of Turkey, something that makes it ever so propitious to take Ankara- Islamabad to the next level.
