Awareness Seminar on “Medicinal and Nutritional Benefits of Moringa olifera” at DUHS

Karachi, January 31, 2019 (PPI-OT): The Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. Mohammad Saeed Quraishy said that we cannot resist from the major diseases in our limited resources while ignoring the medicinal and nutritional benefits of Moringa oliefera. One cannot meet the nutritional requirements ignoring the great blessing of this Miracle Tree.

Even today, the presence of Suhanjna trees in the houses of old times Karachi is the evidence that people in the past were aware of the benefits of this tree. He quoted these words talking in the seminar as the Chief Guest. The seminar was organized by the Dow College of Biotechnology on “Medicinal and Nutritional Benefits of Moringa olifera” as part of Social Integration Outreach Program Research Grant from HEC Pakistan, at Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Auditorium, Dow University of Health Sciences, Ojha Campus.

The seminar was attended by the Pro Vice Chancellor of Dow University, Prof. Dr. Zarnaz Wahid along with a number of faculty members and a huge crowd of students. Dr. Anwar-ul-Hasan Gilani, Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology, Agha Khan University, Dr. Aisha Sana, Associate Professor from Jinnah University of Women, Dr. Shoukat Ali, Principal of Dow College of Biotechnology, and Dr. Sadaf Khan, Assistant Professor of Dow University expressed their benefits and importance of Moringa oliefera in the Seminar.

Prof. Mohammad Saeed Quraishy further said that the leaves of this tree can be used as herbal tea while beans can be cooked as vegetable. He announced that Dow University is starting an awareness campaign regarding the medicinal and nutritional benefits of Moringa soon.

While talking to the audience, Prof. Anwar Gillani said that, there is a market of approximately $5 billion in the world for Moringa olifera and its products. Moringa can be used to treat cancer, diabetes and ulcer. The oil extracted from its leaves can be used in pickle. He further said that approximately 3.8 million people die because of frequent intake of fast food while 8 million people go to hospitals affected by various medicines.

Even Aspirin which is frequently prescribed by the doctors has shown an impression in the form of ulcer. Similarly, every medicine has side effects associated with them. But there is no particular harm in using this blessing of God as Moringa, due to its extra ordinary nutritional value and food supplements, it is globally known as Super Food. He further added that obesity has become a challenge for the people nowadays. 60% of adults in the United States are obese, which cause other deadly diseases including heart diseases.

Dr. Aisha Sana also talked about the benefits of Moringa olifera and told that people in 82 countries of the world are aware of the benefits of this Miracle Tree. Moringa can cause resistance to ulcer as well as cancerous cells i.e. H-Pylori. She further said that the importance of this tree can be well estimated through the evidence of sufficient quantities i.e. 3 times more potassium than banana, 4 times more calcium than milk, 4 times more iron than spinach, 7 times more vitamin C than oranges, 4 times more vitamin A than carrots. She told that Moringa also contains zinc, magnesium and amino acids in high amounts. This plant, if used by mothers who feed their children, could fulfill the nutritional requirements of their infants.

At the end of the seminar, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Saeed Quraishy along with Dr. Anwar-ul-Hasan Gilani planted the Miracle Tree – Moringa oliefera at Dow University of Health Sciences, Ojha Campus. The seminar concluded with the distribution of certificates and shields by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Saeed Quraishy.
