Dubai, April 12, 2022 (PPI-OT):Bangladesh’s Khaled Ahmed has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second day of the second Test against South Africa at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.

Ahmed was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to throwing a ball at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Ahmed, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period, taking his cumulative demerit points to one.

The incident occurred in the 95th over of South Africa’s first innings on day two when Kyle Verreynne hit the ball back towards Ahmed. The bowler then threw it towards Verreynne in an inappropriate and dangerous manner, hitting him on the right glove.

GCU makes substantive increases in research incentives for faculty

Lahore, April 11, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Government College University Lahore has made a substantive increase in the research incentives for its faculty, and also linked these lucrative incentives to the impact factor of the research. The University also recommended opening its laboratories/testing facilities for industry, private firms and individuals to generate funds and linkages to the industry.

These crucial decisions were taken at the 51st meeting of the University’s Advanced Studies and Research Board (ASRB), which continued for four days on the University’s main campus. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi chaired the meeting attended by the senior faculty, Deans, Director Research Dr. Faiza Sharif and Registrar Dr Shaukat Ali.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Zaidi told the media that maximum research incentives were increased from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 60,000/- to motivate their faculty and staff for their top-quality research. However, he said that incentives are reduced to none in faculty of sciences if the research is not linked to impact factor. “The greater the impact factor of a research paper, the higher will be the incentives,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

He said GCU had also allowed its faculty and staff to individually undertake consultancy projects for which they will need to pay 20 percent share to the University. “Similarly, we also devised a complete financial framework to extend testing facilities/ services to industry in Pakistan,” he said. The Vice-Chancellor said that the recommendations of GCU-ASRB would be placed before the Syndicate in the upcoming meeting in May for the final approval.

The ASRB meeting also approved 46 of 50 titles and synopses of theses for PhD research studies. These research proposals included research on “women harassment at workplaces in Lahore since 2002” and “Green synthesis of nano-bioinsecticides and evaluation of their insecticidal activity”. The meeting also appointed supervisors and panels of examiners for evaluation of Theses for PhD.

Major bleeding reduced in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery, POISE-3 Study finds

Islamabad, April 11, 2022 (PPI-OT):A large, international study found a drug that helps the blood clot; reduced life-threatening, major and critical organ bleeding in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery – without increasing major vascular complications.

A study called Peri-operative Ischemic Evaluation-3 (POISE-3) was conducted at multiple centers around the world, sponsored by Population Health Research Institute, Canada. Shifa International Hospitals Ltd, which served as the National Coordinating Center in Pakistan under the supervision of Shifa Clinical Research Center and Principal Investigator Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amir (Consultant General Surgery/Principal Shifa College of Medicine). This was a collaborative endeavour that involved the Aga Khan University Hospital’s research team as well.

It must be noted that Tranexamic acid (TXA), the medicine studied, was given to individuals who were at risk of bleeding or vascular problems. According to the study, TXA did not increase venous thromboembolism, heart attack, non-hemorrhagic stroke, or any other severe vascular complication in the 30 days following surgery.

A senior scientist and Principal Investigator for POISE-3 at McMaster University’s Population Health Research Institute and Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), Dr. P.J. Devereaux presented the findings at the American College of Cardiology’s 2022 conference, which was simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine. “Our research shows that tranexamic acid can help prevent this major bleeding and the need for blood transfusions,” said Devereaux.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Amir (Consultant General Surgery/Principal Shifa College of Medicine), who is also local principal investigator and co-author of the study said that Tranexamic acid revealed a consistent reduction in the risk of bleeding based on different definitions, and it reduced the chance of receiving 1 or 2 to 4 transfusions.” “Given that 300 million procedures are performed each year around the world,” Dr. Amir noted, “tranexamic acid has the potential for significant public health and clinical advantages.”
