Islamabad, January 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):VIS Directorate arranged an online session on Thursday, January 20, 2022 with Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib, Co-founder and CEO of Akhuwat Foundation whom also awarded Asia Noble Prize in 2021. He was also known as “Microfinance Pioneer from Pakistan”. The topic of the discussion was Qarz e Hasna.
HoD, English, Dr. Muhammad Umer Farooq and Deputy Director VIS, Mr. Naeemullah Khan welcomed CEO, Ahuwat Foundation. Dr. Amjad Saqib briefed about Akhuwat Foundation. He explained that progressing from a historical and philosophical discourse towards a pragmatic model of poverty alleviation, Akhuwat was founded by Dr. Amjad Saqib in March 2001. Prior to establishing Akhuwat, he served in the Civil Services of Pakistan in the District Management Group (DMG).
While serving as the General Manager of the Punjab Rural Support Program (PRSP) he had witnessed the devastating impact of poverty and was committed to dedicate the rest of his life to alleviate the suffering of the poor. He once took his friends to visited a village, Jia Bagga, to study the impact of intervention by PRSP. Dr. Kamran Shams and he had a conversation with a local woman, inquiring what has been the impact of the PKR 10,000 loan she took from the PRSP. She said, “Currently my children only eat once a day, but with the loan, I am able to feed them two meals”.
Deputy Director VIS also introduced briefly about VIS program at CUST. Alhamdulillah, Dr. Amjad Saqib already known about VIS and he appreciate the VIS model at CUST. He offered VIS-CUST to establish online tuitions centers in collaboration with Akhuwat for poor and needy students of Pakistan. He also thanked VIS-CUST for engaging volunteers at Akhuwat Foundation. Dr. Amjad Saqib also invited students and CUST management to visit Akhuwat University and Akhuwat head office Lahore. At the end a Question session was held by students. CEO, Akhuwat Foundation answered all. In the closing remarks HoD English and Deputy Director VIS thanked Dr. Amjad Saqib for his valuable time.
