Aga Khan University Examination Board extends supports to strengthen student assessment in Balochistan

Karachi, March 26, 2019 (PPI-OT):The Aga Khan University Examination Board (AKU-EB) hosted a closing ceremony to acknowledge the participants and contribution of stakeholders for the successful completion of the Capacity Development Programme of Student Assessment 2018-2019 in collaboration with the Government of Balochistan, United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and European Union (EU), in Quetta.

Dr Shehzad Jeeva, Director, AKU-EB, welcomed attendees stating: “AKU-EB’s vision is to maintain a model of excellence in education and innovation in Pakistan. Through a system of assessment and high stake examinations conducted at the national level, our mission is to uplift the education system of our country. The Government of Balochistan and its partners have taken full advantage of our experience and expertise to uplift the standards of education and assessment, which would ultimately benefit the students of the province.”

Over the course of this training, AKU-EB provided technical support to build the capacity of various institutions on student assessment from the education sector of Balochistan, including the Balochistan Assessment and Examination Commission, the Bureau of Curriculum, Policy, Planning and Implementation Unit, the Directorate of Schools, and the Professional Institute of Teacher Education.

“This was a one year capacity development programme on student assessment for the province of Balochistan, which utilised an innovative and holistic approach. I am proud to say that we have started to see the impact of this capacity development programme much earlier than expected,” said Dr Naveed Yousuf, Project Director and Associate Director, Assessment, AKU-EB.

While presenting the keynote address Mr Tayyab Lehri, Secretary, Secondary Education, Balochistan, said, “The degree to which this province and its system of education progress is entirely up to those benefiting from this training. Therefore, my request to you is to take careful note of everything that you are learning. Our ultimate goal is education, and you are the product of this training that will help us attain that goal. I am thankful to team AKU-EB for all the dedication and hard work they have demonstrated while sharing their knowledge and expertise with the training participants.”

Mr Syed Arif Shah Shirazi, Chief Executive Officer, Balochistan Assessment and Examination Commission, stated: “Assessment is the means by which we can ensure that we live up to the high standards set by this training. Under the skilled guidance of the AKU Examination Board and the dedicated input by those that have participated in this programme, I am confident that the educational landscape of Balochistan will be transformed before our very eyes.” Certificates were distributed among the participants to acknowledge their participation during the one-year training.

“When BAEC was established, we realised that there was a need for capacity development within the institution. Continuing with the existing system would have been easy, but this was not what we wanted. We could have sought assistance from international organisations, but they lacked local context. Thus, we turned to AKU-EB for guidance and a year on, I consider it to have been the best solution. This has been an experiential learning process aimed at changing the system from its roots,” shared Ms Sehrish Nagi, Education Officer, UNICEF, Balochistan on behalf of Palwasha Badar Jalalzai, Education Specialist, UNICEF, Balochistan as she reflected upon the need and importance of this programme.

Facilitators from AKU-EB, Munira Mohammad, Rabia Nisar, Raabia Hirani, Zain-ul-Muluk, and Project Manager, Qazi Taimour Jibran also reflected on their project journey during the closing ceremony. Mr Hanif Sharif, Associate Director, Operations, AKU-EB, expressed his gratitude towards the participants and various attending institutions while presenting a token of appreciation to the stakeholders who provided their support towards the successful completion of this project.
