6th ICHPE 2023: Strategizing a Resilient Education System

Lahore, November 25, 2022 (PPI-OT):Medics dispensed ideas of fostering resilience as a transversal skill, ensuring well-being of students and faculty in the conference. The health profession, with all its intricacies, demands that medics approach new situations, people, or experiences with confidence and a positive mind-set. With proper training in a health professions education system, this mind-set can be cultivated.

One key element to nurturing such a mind-set is resilience in the education system, and this is exactly what was emphasized during the International Conference on Health Professions Education (ICHPE).

The International Conference on Health Professions Education (ICHPE) is one of the premier conferences in the field of medical education in Pakistan, which was hosted by the University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD) at the University of Lahore on November 3, 2022. ICHPE significantly contributes to the continuing education of healthcare professionals.

The conference, which is being held since 2014, aims to introduce health professions educators to basic and applied concepts of medical education while also improving their ability to perform the basic functions of a medical teacher in an institute. Keeping up with tradition, the famous national and international speakers this year stressed on building a resilient education system.

Prof. David Gordon (President, World Federation for Medical Education, UK) talked about accreditation challenges from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), which aims to enhance the quality of medical education worldwide. He facilitated and educated the heads of medical institutes in Pakistan, decision makers, and major stakeholder groups in the medical education sector.

He emphasised why accreditation is essential and how it should be done. Experts from Iran and Saudi Arabia also shared their experiences in obtaining WFME accreditation. Delegates were also briefed on the challenges faced by Pakistan in securing WFME accreditation.

Furthermore, the relationship between leadership and resilience, as well as its development in educational fields, were discussed during this annual academic platform. As an external curricular outcome, Dr. Naveed Yousuf (Chair Department for Educational Development, Faculty of Health Sciences at Aga Khan University) presented his talk on “The Role of Resilience in Developing Leadership.”

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tariq (Professor and Vice Dean, Department for Educational Development, Professor of Medicine, and Aga Khan University) presented his talk on the association of resilience with medical education, and Dr. Muhammad Saif ul Bahri Yusoff (Universiti Sains Malaysia) highlighted, “The Integrated Resilience Model: Applications and Implications to Medical Education.”

In highlighting how resilience can be fostered as a transversal skill to ensure the well-being of students and faculty beyond COVID 19, Prof. Dr. Rehan Ahmed Khan (Assistant Dean of Medical Education, Riphah International University, Pakistan), Prof. Dr. Lubna Baig (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Pakistan), and Prof. Dr. Shahid Shamim (Professor of Medical Education, Aga Khan University, Pakistan) gave illustrative presentations.

Other topics discussed in depth with conference participants included “Venues for Inter-Professional Education (IPE),” “The Importance of Trustworthy Professional Activities,” “Preparing for Resilience: The Interconnectedness of Uncertainty Tolerance and Personal Epistemology,” and “CPD and Life-long Learning.”

The eminent speakers on these topics were Dr. Mohamed Al Eraky (Imam Abdurrahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia), Prof. Olle Ten Cate (Netherlands), Prof. Dr. Lynn Monrouxxe (University of Sydney), and Dr. Lawrence Sherman (USA).

Doctors from around 25 medical colleges across Pakistan took part in the conference. Mr. Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman (Governor of Punjab) was the chief guest at the opening ceremony. He praised UCMD’s efforts in making a significant impact in health profession education. The 6th International Conference on Health Education concluded with a closing ceremony.

Mr. Muhammad Ashraf (Rector, UOL), congratulated Prof. Dr. Mahwish Arooj (Principal, UCM), and Prof. Dr. Shahid Malik (Pro-Rector, Health Sciences) and the entire ICHPE team for their endless efforts and dedication in making the conference a huge success. The closing ceremony was concluded with the distribution of shield to the entire ICHPE organising team and task force.
