ISSI-ASEAN Committee in Islamabad Dialogue Held 

Islamabad, January 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) held a dialogue session with ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI), led by H. E. Nguyen Tien Phuong, Ambassador of Vietnam and Chairman of ACI. ACI comprises Ambassadors/High Commissioners and Heads of Mission of ASEAN Members based in Islamabad. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director-General ISSI, led the ISSI side.

In his remarks, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood stated that Pakistan recognized the ASEAN ‘miracle’ that had contributed immensely to peace, regional economic integration, and prosperity through effective regional cooperation in Southeast Asia. He added that Pakistan’s desire to forge a closer relationship with ASEAN was driven by its ‘Vision East Asia’ policy as well as the imperatives of geo-economics. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood stressed that a deeper and elevated Pakistan-ASEAN partnership was in the mutual benefit of both sides.

The ISSI-ACI dialogue focused on exploring avenues for further deepening cordial relations between Pakistan and ASEAN members, bilaterally as well as on the institutional platform of ASEAN. Both sides exchanged views on the current state of Pakistan-ASEAN cooperation and underlined the need to enhance linkages between business communities and academic institutions/think-tanks across ASEAN member states. The ACI Chairman and other members shared valuable suggestions on strengthening overall collaboration between the two sides, including through increased people-to-people exchanges.

It was also agreed that ISSI-ACI collaboration will be utilized to raise awareness about the potential of Pakistan-ASEAN partnership and ways to optimally realize it. Besides the Chairman, the ACI delegation included H.E. Mr. Adam M. Tugio, Ambassador of Indonesia; H.E. Mr. Chakkrid Krachaiwong, Ambassador of Thailand; H.E. Mr. U Win Myint, Ambassador of Myanmar; Ms. Maria Agnes M. Cervantes, Charge d’ Affaires of Philippines; Mr. Mr. Abdul Mubdi Osman, Acting High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam; and Mr. Nor Azuan Haji Ayub, Charge d’ Affaires of Malaysia. Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman BoG ISSI, and Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director China-Pakistan Study Center, also spoke on the occasion.

IIUI Acting President visits male hostels, listens to issues of students

Islamabad, January 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):Professor. Dr. N. B. Jumani, Acting President of International Islamic University (IIU) chaired a session on Thursday at the hostel 5 and 6 of the university where he listened to the problems of the students in presence of all the relevant officers as well as he along with all the Directors personally visited various places at the hostels of male campus and inspected overall situation. The session was attended by all the Directors and their relevant officials of the departments, while Dr. Abrar Anver, Provost male hostels was also present on the occasion.

Listening to the problems of the students and addressing the issues, the Acting President directed that there must be no negligence in addressing the immediate solvable issues. He desired that all the concerned departments according to the identified problems at the hostels must chalk out plans and submit the reports along with solutions in his office at earliest as he would be personally supervising all matters discussed in hostels during this visit. The Worthy Acting President said that there will be zero tolerance for those who will show negligence in duty.

He directed that improvement in security, cleanliness, hygiene, electrical, gardening, civil and overall life quality in the hostels is the top priority. He said as per vision Worthy President IIUI Dr. Hathal Homoud Alotaibi, facilitation of the students and provision of the best living environment to the students is a top priority of the university management. He said no stone shall be left unturned to make hostels neat, clean, hygienic and as per international standard. He also visited the turnstile gates and advised that strict vigilance and monitoring must be ensured to identify illegal boarders or any other irrelevant person. He also visited the rooms of the students and ensured that their problems shall be solved at earliest.

He said that these visits and meet ups shall continue and the administration teams in his supervision shall keep paying surprise visits as well. He also checked maintenance registers, availability of staff and mess facilities at the hostels. On the occasion, Dr. Abrar Anver thanked the Acting President and his team for visiting the hostels. He said the students’ community has felt really happy and blessed as the administration itself visits them, listens to their problems and issues orders on the spot for swift solutions. He also assured on the occasion that he would make it sure that not a single illegal boarder would be able to stay at the hostels.

He apprised that the provost office is making sure that only the boarder would benefit from the mess facility. The students, while appreciating the visit termed it a historical initiative by administration. They said they are happy that the administration is aware of their issues and the Worthy Acting President has issued an immediate order for solution to their number of problems.

Government College University Women Basketball Team Wins Opening Match of Intervarsity Championship

Lahore, January 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):The Government College University Lahore’s women’s basketball team has performed exceptionally well in the opening match of the All Pakistan Intervarsity Women Basketball Championship 2022-23, hosted by Kinnaird College for Women University, Lahore under the umbrella of Higher Education Commission. The GCU team defeated the University of Haripur with a score of 29-18 at the Kinnaird College court. It’s worth noting that GCU last year opened admissions to women on a sports basis and this achievement by the women’s basketball team is an indication that this special initiative has begun to yield positive results.

The basketball championship is one of the highest-level tournaments in the university’s sports calendar, featuring teams from universities all over Pakistan competing against each other. GCU’s team has been placed in Group B and will play their next match tomorrow against the University of Management and Technology at the Lahore College for Women University court.

GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi said that the university’s sports board has expressed their support for the team and wished them the best of luck for their upcoming matches. Prof. Zaidi said the win highlights the dedication and hard work of the women’s basketball team and the importance of women’s participation in sports. “The university is proud of the achievement of its female students in the field of sports and looks forward to their continued success in the various tournaments,” he concluded.

Zahra Somani named as the Chief Advancement Officer for AKU, effective Apr 3, 2023 

Karachi, January 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):​Zahra Somani has been named as the Chief Advancement Officer for the Aga Khan University, effective April 3, 2023. The announcement was made today by President Sulaiman Shahabuddin. Zahra will join the University Leadership Team and lead a division devoted to nurturing relationships and financial sustainability with the University’s global community of alumni, donors, and partners. Reporting to the President, she will work closely with relevant committees of the Board of Trustees, University leadership, Deans, Directors, and senior volunteers.

“I am confident that her diverse skill set, and significant experience will greatly contribute towards the development of a sophisticated advancement function at AKU,” said President Shahabuddin’s.

“I am honoured to be joining President Shahabuddin’s leadership team at this exciting juncture for AKU. AKU plays an essential role through its teaching, research, and health system,” said Zahra. “I am looking forward to working with AKU’s highly acclaimed faculty, professionals, volunteers, alumni, friends, and donors to advance the mission of this great institution.”

Zahra is a thoughtful leader and has a background that spans both business and non-profit leadership. She currently serves as President of the Aga Khan Council for Edmonton and has previously led fundraising nationally for the Aga Council for Canada as Member for Resource Mobilization. She is Past Chair of the Edmonton Community Foundation, an organization that stewards over $700 million of endowments that support charitable causes. She brings extensive governance and fundraising experience, having chaired the board of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and Norquest College’s capital campaign. She also served on the University of Alberta’s Board of Governors.

Zahra is currently Partner at Pirani Group. She is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and the University of Alberta Business Advisory Council. She also holds an ICD.D designation, the highest designation granted by the Institute of Corporate Directors. In 2022, she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in recognition of her service to Canadians.

She succeeds Asif Fancy.

CM Chaudhry Parvez Elahi gives in principle approval to grant tehsil status to Daultala 

Lahore, January 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):On the order of Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, another tehsil was added to Gujjar Khan Tehsil of Rawalpindi as he has given in-principle approval to grant tehsil status to Daultala. Provincial Minister Raja Basharat, Amjad Mahmood Chaudhary, Ch Sajid Mehmood and Javed Kausar called on CM at his office on Thursday. The CM gave the notification to them.

The parliamentarians thanked CM for the announcement and Ch Sajid Mehmood said that a long-standing demand has been met and the CM has won the hearts of the people of the area. The CM said that this would ensure sustainable development while creating new job opportunities and the standard of basic facilities will also improve. Nadeem Qureshi was also present.

CM Chaudhry Parvez Elahi chairs meeting about law and order 

Lahore, January 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Parvez Elahi chaired a meeting at his office to review the law and order situation in the province. ACS (home) Capt. R Asadullah Khan, IG Police Aamir Zulfiqar and Principal Secretary to CM Muhammad Khan Bhatti attended the meeting. The CM appreciated the improvement in the general law and order situation in the province adding that all resources were being provided to protect the life and property of the people.

The safety of the people was a priority, he stressed and directed that indiscriminate action should be continued against criminals. Crackdown should be done indiscriminately against elements displaying arms, he said. Indiscriminate action should be taken on arms display and the law prohibiting the display of weapons should be strictly implemented. Action should be taken against such elements regardless of political affiliation, he added.
