IBA Karachi organized Game Fest 2023

Karachi, January 31, 2023 (PPI-OT):School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi in collaboration with Mind Storm Studios, Raptr Games and IGN Pakistan, hosted the two-day ‘IBA Game Fest 2023’, at the IBA Main Campus.

The Game Fest was a resounding success, 90+ students created 22 games without using code, digital art or technology, literally ‘out of thin air’. With the theme ‘Out of Thin Air’, the event was part of IBA and Mind Storm Studios’ mission to emphasize hands-on learning experiences, real time feedback and mentorship from industry leaders. The winning games were ‘Karachi Tails’, ‘Fools Gambit’ and ‘Space Survival’, all three winning ideas were created by teams from Cedar College, Karachi.

With a focus on understanding the game building process and creating games, the event gathered talented students from across Karachi, studying in O levels, a levels, Matric or F.Sc, who worked in teams to deliver 22 games.

The event aimed to provide students an exposure to design thinking principles, shipping and demonstrating products in less than 36 hours, incorporating real time feedback, and connecting with industry role models and mentors. The event produced an array of diverse games, ranging from educational games that utilised the periodic table to narrative-based fantasy strategy games. Head of Marketing and Communications, Ms. Ayesha Javed delivered the opening remarks.

Dean SMCS, Dr. Shakeel Khoja welcomed students and said that it was heartening to see the young students from various reputable schools. He said, “After the success of previous game fests, we decided to engage school and college level students as their ideas are bound to be unique and innovative”. He urged the students to make the most of this opportunity and learn the essentials of game designing from the gurus of the game development industry.

Founder and CEO, Katalyst Labs, Ms. Jehan Ara, commended IBA and the event partners for organizing the platform. She encouraged the young gamers to utilize this platform and explore creative boundaries which will help improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Highlighting the IBA experience, Chairperson, Department of Computer Science, SMCS, Dr. Shahid Hussain shed light on IBA’s Computer Science and Mathematics programs which are some of the best programs offered in the country. Director Mind Storm Labs, Mr. Yaser Awan, emphasized the ability to combine curiosity, creativity and inspiration to deliver game playing experiences that engage players without using technology.

The Game Fest commenced with a quest combining Haikus riddles, student and campus engagement. Titled ‘!Quest’ the activity was designed by IBA students to welcome the participants and to create an opportunity for them to experience the culture and campus of the institution. Participants arrived at the Alumni Students’ Centre to compete in the ‘Out of Thin Air’ game-building competition, introducing them to IBA’s learning environment, conducive for fostering practices of academic and professional growth.

Industry mentors and jury assessed participating teams in two rounds. The final round Jury included Jehan Ara, Habibullah Khan, Imran Azhar, Imran Khan, Irfan Kheiri, Ayesha Javed, Hassan bin Rizwan, Bilal Hameed, Zain Merchant, Sameer Ahmed Khan, Iqbal Ali Khan and Adnan Rizvi. The jury assessed ideas on creativity, design, playability and fun.

The Game Fest culminated with the crowning of three winning teams, Terminators, secured the first place with their game ‘Karachi Tails’, a board game that challenged players to become the city’s next mayor. Team Graphite’s ‘Fools Gambit’ was adjudged second, offering a creative twist on chess. Third place went to Terrific Trio’s ‘Space Survival’, a post-apocalyptic survival game that tasked players with reaching Earth 2.0. Mr. Awan delivered the concluding remarks and formally closed the event.

GCU blood donation drive a big success

Lahore, January 31, 2023 (PPI-OT):A blood donation camp at Government College University Lahore draws huge success, with students and faculty coming together to donate blood. Over 200 bottles of blood were collected for children suffering from thalassemia and cancer on the first day of a two-day camp organized by the University’s Blood Donor Society (BDS) in partnership with the Fatimid Foundation.

The Vice Chancellor of GCU, Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi, not only visited the camp but also made a blood donation, inspiring others to follow suit. The Vice-Chancellor said the GCU Blood Donor Society every year donate over 1600 units of blood to patients in need. “This year’s camp once again demonstrated the university’s commitment to making a positive impact in the community,” he added.

Students who participated in the blood drive emphasized the importance of blood donation, and the positive impact it has on the health of donors. “By reducing the risk of heart attack, cancer, and improving blood pressure and cholesterol levels, blood donation is a selfless act that saves lives and benefits the donor,” they said. The blood donation camp was organised in collaboration with the Fatimid Foundation.

Terrorists are attacking freely, but the priority of fake rulers is not to establish law and order, but only political revenge: Ch Parvez Elahi

Lahore, January 31, 2023 (PPI-OT):Former Advisor Waseem Khan and former MPA Ch Ehsan ul Haq called on former Chief Minister Punjab Ch Parvez Elahi here today (Tuesday). In the meeting former MPAs Omar Abbas Dhillon, Omar Aftab, Ali Abbas Agha were also present. Views were exchanged regarding national political situation and law and order affairs.

Talking to them, Ch Parvez Elahi said that the terrorists are freely attacking whereas political opponents are being imprisoned, the rulers are worried neither about the country nor the people, their priority is not to maintain law and order but only political victimization.

He said that be it the federal government or caretaker set up, all are worried as how to minus Imran Khan, those having an agenda of victimization should listen that Imran Khan’s way cannot be blocked, people are with him, and the rulers should compete with him in the election. Ch Parvez Elahi said that Imran Khan is the most popular political leader of the country, PDM’s 13 parties together cannot compete with Imran Khan, PDM is running away from local government elections to general election’s every front.

He further said that the caretaker set up is busy in searching each and every file and cancelling measures taken during our tenure, caretaker set up is guest of just two and half months, their all unconstitutional measures are being recorded, whosoever is exceeding the law, he will have to face shackles of law.

IUB is currently awarding scholarships worth Rs 95 crore to 22,000 students, Dr. Ghulam Hasan Abbasi

Bahawalpur, January 31, 2023 (PPI-OT):The Islamia University of Bahawalpur has increased the number of scholarships for students in the current financial situation. The university is currently giving scholarships worth Rs 95 crore to 22,000 students and crisis scholarships are also being given to first semester students during the recent spring semester admissions.

Dr. Ghulam Hasan Abbasi, Director Financial Assistance, said that on the special direction of Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob, crisis scholarship was started for people affected by the Covid-19 epidemic and floods, in which thousands of students were given scholarships worth 95 crores and now the Vice Chancellor has directed to start this scheme for first semester students as well.

In this regard the University Scholarship Office is working day and night and a special notification has also been issued. 10 new buses have been added to the university fleet which will further improve the university transport schedule. Meanwhile, admissions for BS, MPhil and Ph.D. are going on in the university.

This year the university is providing admission in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan and Liaquat Pur and so far 4000 students have taken admission and it is expected that 15 new NOC will be issued by Higher Education Commission. After which there will be 1000 more admissions. Similarly, admissions to BS programs are also going on. Admissions are also going on in Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalnagar campuses and the number of buses has been increased there. The new building of the university will soon open for academic activities.
