AKU Chief Information Officer receives global industry award

Karachi, December 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):Aga Khan University’s (AKU) Global Chief Information Officer, Shaukat Ali Khan, has been awarded the DXInspire 2022 Award at the recently concluded World CIO Summit held in Bangkok, Thailand. The DXInspire Award represents the highest accolade that a CIO can receive – it is offered by the Global CIO Forum in recognition of individuals involved in path-breaking projects that have redefined Digital Transformation.

The Global CIO Forum receives tens of thousands of submissions annually, of which 4,000 are nominated for further consideration. Of these, 200 are recognized as finalists and awarded the World CIO 200 Award at the World CIO 200 – Grand Finale which took place last week in Thailand. The DXInspire Award is then reserved for the top 10 CIOs in the world, selected from the 200 already recognized finalists.

“I am honoured to receive this highest level of recognition by peers in the Information and Communications space on behalf of the Aga Khan University,” said Shaukat. “I believe that this award will only further cement AKU’s already strong reputation in digital and technological leadership in Pakistan and all the countries where we work according to the vision of our Chancellor His Highness the Aga Khan, while also burnishing the University’s global profile.”

Shaukat’s international career spans over two decades across strategic and operational IT disciplines in academia, pharmaceutical, humanitarian, defence and hospitality sectors in both developed and developing countries. He holds a Master’s in Computer Science from Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden and is also a Harvard Business School Certified Dynamic Manager and Leader, equipped with the tools and best practices to lead strategic change and innovation.

Aga Khan University’s President, Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, was among other leaders who commended Shaukat on the receipt of the award. “I commend Shaukat Ali Khan on this outstanding award and recognition. Place of kindness inaugurated at female campus 

Islamabad, December 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):A “Place of Kindness” has been established at Female Campus of the university that was inaugurated on Thursday by Prof. Dr. Samina Malik, Vice President, and Female Campus. Faculty, staff members and students participated in the inauguration ceremony. Addressing on the occasion Dr. Samina said charity is voluntary giving of help to those in need. She added raising philanthropic awareness among students and employees is one way to motivate them to contribute towards society.

She mentioned that the place will serve as direct channel from rich to the needy. VP female campus opined that it will allow students and employees to donate items (clothes, shoes, food etc.) as charity for those who need them but cannot afford them.

Prof. Dr. Samina Malik explained the philosophy of charity and the key motives behind this initiative. She added that the nominated place will not only allow the donors the satisfaction of being able to help the needy directly but also maintains the dignity of the poor students and employees who do not have to ask for their necessary needs. She also encouraged all too generously participate in this activity.

Faculty and staff members appreciated the idea and endowed items related to daily use at the place of kindness. Prof. Dr. Samina Malik appreciated the initial response of the faculty members at the place.

Meeting of logistics and security committee for extravaganza 2022 held 

Islamabad, December 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):As university enters into final stage for the preparations of the mega event extravaganza 2022, a meeting of the Logistics and security Committee was held here at the new campus in the chairmanship of the Vice President (A and F) Dr. N.B Jumani.

It was attended by the Provost Male Dr. Abrar Anver who convened the meeting, heads of the sub committees, members of the Logistics and security Committee, Students Advisors provost female, secretary steering committee of the event Mr. Al-Hassan and other relevant officials. The committee reviewed the arrangements and discussed possibilities and cooperation in terms of Logistics and security.

Dr. N.B Jumani appreciating the hard work of all the sub committees hoped that it would be one of the most memorable events in the history of IIUI. He ensured that every committee shall be provided cooperation and support adding that there will be no stone left unturned to make this mega event a real success.

Dr. Abrar Anver apprised of the mandate, scope and possible aspects of the committee keeping in view the overall arrangements including book fair, exhibitions, Mushaira and arrival of the high profile guests as well as media coverage.

Universities role critical to get Pakistan out of the political, economic crisis: GCU VC

Lahore, December 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi, the Vice Chancellor of GC University Lahore, sees the critical role of educational institutions especially universities to get Pakistan out of the social, political and economic crisis.

“A nation or a country sans excellence in research and innovation can’t progress. The kind of situation Pakistan is passing through, a strange kind of chaos and severe economic crisis; it’s time for educational institutions to do self-accountability to see where they lacked and how they can play their role now to improve our economy and intellect,” says Prof. Zaidi.

He was addressing the 17th National Symposium on Frontiers of Physics that began on Thursday began at the Government College University Lahore with deliberations on new technologies and challenges for Pakistan in the field of science.

Nobel Laureate Sir Roger Penrose is also scheduled to address the three-day symposium organized by the GCU Physics Department in collaboration with the Punjab Higher Education Commission and the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.

GCU VC Prof. Asghar Zaidi called upon the participants to also discuss the societal impact of research being presented at the conference. Dr Shoaib Ahmad from National Centre for Physics seconded the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi said something wrong happened which detracted us from science and education, and undermined the role of educational institutions.

In his keynote address, noted plasma physicist and mathematician Prof. Dr. G. Murtaza noted that the world of science was witnessing rapid developments and knowledge was accumulating at very fast pace and physicists are making great progress in uncovering the deep mysteries of nature. He explained the recent major breakthroughs in physics which have resulted in the development of quark model of matter. He explained to the students the technological advancements which have won the Nobel Prize in the last two decades.

GCU Dean Prof. Dr Riaz Ahmad said a large number of physicists from Pakistan’s leading universities and R and D organizations are participating in this three-day event which will have more than 20 technical sessions on different topics including condensed matter physics, high energy particle physics, nanotechnology, cosmology, atomic and molecular physics, lasers, plasma physics and controlled fusion.

About 50 physicists are presenting talks and papers at the symposium highlighting the recent important developments in physics and the impact of these developments on various aspects of our lives.

Punjab University Child Welfare Center marks Int’l Day of person with disability 

Lahore, December 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):In connection the international day of persons with disability, Punjab University Child Welfare Center (CWC) organized special event at Pervez Hassan Environmental Law Auditorium. On this occasion, Dean Faculty of Information and Media Studies Prof Dr Khalid Mehmood, Director Institute of Special Education Prof Dr Humaira Bano, Principal CWC Dr Ayesha Wajihullah, faculty members, students with special needs and their parents were present.

In the event, special children presented tableaus and received great applause from the audience. In his address, Dr Khalid Mehmood said that all human beings were different from each other in terms of abilities and the word ‘disability’ should not be used for special children. He said that with the passage of time, children with unique abilities have been accepted.

He congratulated the organizers for organizing such event and appreciated the role of teachers and parents in developing the skills of the children. Dr Humaira Bano said that Allah Almighty has blessed special children with unique abilities, by identifying them; they could become an important part of the society. The Principal said that Child Welfare Centre would continue to play a role to increase the skills of children with unique abilities.

Punjab University Department of Philosophy organizes Iqbal memorial lecture

Lahore, December 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):Punjab University Department of Philosophy organized Iqbal Memorial Lecture on “The Quranic Principles for the Interpretation of the Qur’an and Critical Examination of the Basic Tenets of Islamic Theology” at Al Raazi Hall.

On this occasion, In-charge Department of Philosophy Dr Muhammad Jawwad, former Chairman Department of Philosophy Prof Dr Abdul Hafeez Fazli, known scholar Prof Dr Absar Ahmad, faculty members and students were present.

In his lecture, Dr Fazli said that The Quranic concept of rationality is based on Quranic principles stated in the Holy Book. He said that if the Muslims want to come out of this intellectual crisis, civilizational decline and the quagmire of sectarianism and wish to rise again on the horizons of civilizations, they should reconstruct their theology based on Quran. Dr Absar said that the subject of philosophy teaches us a lot.

He said that we should adopt the habit of reading the Holy Quran with translation/comprehension. Dr Muhammad Jawwad thanked the speakers for the keynote speech for character building of the students. He said that the Quran is a reality without the guidance of which success in life is not possible.
