ORIC and Faculty of Natural Sciences Organizes PhD Poster Competition 

Lahore, October 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization – ORIC in collaboration with the Faculty of Natural Sciences organized a Ph.D. Poster Competition for the Ph.D. Scholars of Natural Sciences on Wednesday, October 26, from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm in the S-block. The Rector, Dr. Jonathan Addleton, and the Vice-Rector Dr. Douglas Trimble graced the event and presented the awards to the winners.

Ph.D. scholars from the KAM – School of Life Sciences, Department of Physics, and Department of Chemistry took an active part in the event. The department-wise breakdown of Ph.D. participants was

University of Turbat’s students had a field visit to Social Welfare Department at Turbat

Turbat, October 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):A field visit was organized for the students of BS 4th semester of the Department of Sociology, University of Turbat (UoT) to the District Social Welfare Department at Turbat on 27th October 2022. The aim of the field visit was to give practical exposure to the students regarding the ongoing community development projects and social activities by the social welfare department at Turbat. The Students were supervised by Syed Nooral Barkat, Lecturer of Sociology.

This visit was done for the promotion of education and practical knowledge regarding various projects implemented by the social welfare department. Syed Nooral Barkat and the students were welcomed by Mr. Qadeer Luqman, Deputy Director of, Social Welfare Department. He thanked Professor Dr. Abdul Saboor Baloch, Dean Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Dr. Muhammad Yaseen, Chairperson Sociology Department for arranging the visit of students to the social welfare department.

The students also visited the office of the Director Social Welfare Department, Makran Division. The visitors were welcomed by Muhammad Abdu Khalid, Divisional Director, Mr. Waqar Baloch, Child Protection Officer, and Ms. Rabia Yasin, District Literacy Officer. On this occasion, the students were briefed about the activities and programs of the social welfare office department.

Women Engineering Society – Sanitary Kits Package Campaign for Flood Affected Areas

Swabi, October 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Women Engineering Society (WES) under the Student Affairs Department organized a flood relief campaign program in October 2022 for the female in the flood affected areas of Baluchistan, Southern Punjab, and KPK, in collaboration with Mahwari Justice (Menstruation Relief Campaign). “Mahwari Justice is a menstruation relief campaign for flood victims initiated by two students, Bushra Mahnoor and Anum Khalid, who are reaching out and providing young female flood victims with menstrual hygiene kits.

Each kit contains a pack of sanitary napkins, either bought or made by themselves, a bar of soap and underwear”. WES previously initiated a campaign to collect monetary funds for the people of the flood affected areas. In the latter phase, volunteers from all batches of GIK Institute packed sanitary kits for flood struck communities. The Women Engineering Society was successful in packaging around 700 kits in just one day with 30 volunteers from student body.

Students of University of Turbat secured distinguished position in Speed Programming Competition

Turbat, October 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Students of the department of Computer Science, University of Turbat (UoT), participated in the ‘Speed Programming Competition’ held at the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), Quetta on 24th and 25th October 2022. This event was titled “CHALLENGING THE GEEKS OF BALOCHISTAN”. Twenty-four teams from various universities of Balochistan, including the “Tri-Gork Coders” team from the University of Turbat participated in the event. The UoT’s team consisted of Faisal Jan, Imdad Rind, and Baloch from the 6th Semester of BS Computer Science.

All teams were assigned to complete different tasks in a programming language (like C, C++, and Python). The assigned tasks were to be completed within a given timeline. The UoT’s team secured 8th position among 24 participating teams from different universities in Balochistan. Engineer Ahmed Farooq Bazai, BUITEMS Vice Chancellor awarded them appreciation certificates and gift hampers. While congratulating the students for this achievement, Prof. Dr. Jan Muhammad, VC UoT said that our students were talented and hardworking and that they were on par with the students of national universities, and capable of competing at any national or international level.

He said the faculty members are working hard to prepare the students for contributing to society. Mukhtar Hussain, Chairman Computer Science Department appreciated the efforts of students for showcasing brilliant performance and securing positions in the competition.

The students thanked the Worthy Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the Computer Science Department for their support and encouragement, and for having given them an opportunity to demonstrate their talent at provincial and national level competitions. LaTeX: An Upcoming Workshop 

Islamabad, October 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):Latex is a Typesetting System suitable for producing medium-to-large technical, scientific and mathematical documents which enable authors to typeset and print their work at the highest typographical quality.

Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) is organizing Two Days Hands-On Workshop on “Latex Software” on 07th-08th November, 2022 (02:00 PM-05:00 PM) in Instructions Lab-6, M-Block, CUST.

Participants of workshop will be able to install, operate and further take up design and development activities on the Latex independently, in their respective environments. The complete course contents are enclosed in the brochure.

ACDC’s 3rd Anniversary Review Meeting

Islamabad, October 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Arms Control and Disarmament Centre (ACDC) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) organised its “3rd Anniversary Review Meeting” on October 31, 2022, at 1030 hrs, to review the annual performance of the Centre and provide overall policy directions. The members of the ACDC advisory board attended the meeting including Ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi, Dr Pervez Butt, Maj Gen Ausaf Ali HI (M), Maj Gen Naseer Ali Khan HI (M), Dr Adil Sultan, Amb Zamir Akram and Air Cdre Khalid Banuri.

In his welcome remarks Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Director General ISSI, said that the ACDC is one the centres of excellence at the ISSI and today it completes three years. Whatever ACDC has done is part of the larger effort of ISSI. He apprised the advisory board of the workings of the ISSI, its centres of excellence, its vision, outreach, its events, its research work and policy inputs.

While giving the Performance Review of ACDC, Malik Qasim Mustafa, Director ACDC, apprised the advisory board about the vision and functions of the centre. He said that the ACDC was established on October 30, 2019, as a part of the ISSI. The vision of ACDC is to contribute focused research and quality policy input through in-depth analysis and dialogue on issues of arms control, disarmament, nuclear safety and security, nuclear deterrence, emerging technologies and challenges to peace and strategic stability.

He apprised the advisory board that the centre has so far organised 23 major events including seminars, roundtables and Tuesday Dialogue. He also talked about the ACDC’s vision for 2020-2023 with a theme of “Strategic Stability in South Asia.” He also gave a review of 2022 activities. The 23 events organised so far ranged on issues like the effects of emerging technologies, cyber security, artificial intelligence for socio-economic development, nuclearisation of the Indian Ocean, Indian naval modernisation and its impact on South Asia, and India’s “accidental” missile launch.

ACDC’s research activities included issues briefs, confidential briefs, research articles and a special report at ISSI Foundation day on “Comprehensive National Security and Emerging Technologies.” He also highlighted the book that ACDC is about to launch Titled “Shifting Doctrines and Emerging Threats: Challenges to Strategic Stability in South Asia.”

This was followed by an interactive discussion in which the advisory board member appreciated the work of ACDC and gave suggestions to improve the Centre’s research, activities and outreach. They suggested the improvement of outreach to national and international think tanks on issues of arms control and disarmament; publish internationally; invest in more book projects that can highlight Pakistan’s point of view; technology expert-social scientist collaboration; look at nuclear issues like lessons from the Ukraine war so that Pakistani experts can gain traction internationally; start conversations on public-private collaboration for emerging technologies; the need to work on issues of space economy that can earn revenue for Pakistan and contribute to socio-economic development.

This was followed by a cake cutting by Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman BOG ISSI, members of ACDC and the advisory board.
