AKUH holds Pink Walk to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness 

Karachi, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):​The Aga Khan University Hospital continued its tradition of the annual ‘Pink Walk’ to raise awareness of Breast Cancer. The walk was organized at the AKUH’s Stadium Road Campus and was attended by hundreds of people, including AKU staff, students, faculty, members of the general public and the media.

The walk is part of a month-long AKUH campaign, titled “Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer Together”, the purpose of which is to encourage early screening, diagnosis and treatment for the disease. It is estimated that one in every eight women is at a high risk of breast cancer.

Research shows that the disease responds very well to treatment when caught and treated early. Awareness campaigns such as these bring focus to the issue, so more and more human lives can be saved.

After a spirited walk, led by a talented group of children playing in a flute band, Dr Shahid Shafi, CEO of AKUH, P spoke about the importance of holding such events to raise awareness about breast cancer. He said early diagnosis and timely detection play a vital role in curbing breast cancer. Therefore it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease for timely treatment.

Dr Abida Sattar, Section Head of Breast Surgery at AKUH, championed the multi-pronged cause of Breast Cancer awareness, screening, diagnosis and treatment and reiterated that early detection plays a vital role in timely treatment.

She went on to add that breast cancer is a disease that is not limited to women, but can affect men as well. She also urged men to make sure the women in their lives get screened each year and immediately seek a specialist’s opinion in case of any symptoms.

Renowned celebrities, Osama Tahir, Zhalay Sarhadi, and Umer Alam also pledged their support to the cause by leading the participants during the walk, which was held at the Sports and Rehabilitation Centre at the Hospital’s Stadium Road Campus.

While the Pink Walk was the highlight of the evening, the Hospital’s breast surgeons and other clinical leads leveraged this opportunity to interact and educate the attendees of the walk and the wider audience on the benefits of timely breast screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated internationally every October. AKUH dedicates the entire month to educating the public that early detection saves lives. In addition to encouraging women who are 40 years of age and above to get screening mammograms done every year, the Hospital also encourages men to support their mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters, to get screened and not ignore any symptoms.

Sindh University to hold trials of badminton for male students on Nov 1

Jamshoro, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):The University of Sindh Jamshoro has announced plans to hold the trials of badmintons from the male students who want to join the Inter-University Badminton Championship 2022-23, which is scheduled to be organized on November 1, 2022.

In a statement issued here by the SU’s Directorate of Sports (Boys), the Director Sports Ajved Ahmed said that the trials will be carried at 10 am in Hyder Bakhsh Jatoi Pavilion. He further informed that the selection committee will conduct the trials of the aspiring students on November 1 and the selected players will play the games in the Inter-University Badminton Championship 2022-23.

He advised the students wishing to partake in the trials to appear before the selection committee in a proper kit as per the rules and regulations of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), adding that their age should be less than 25 years. The students have been asked to bring matriculation as well as intermediate certificates, enrolment, university ID card, NIC, COVID vaccination card and 2 passport size photographs with them.

National Weed Science conference at PU

Lahore, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):“17th National Weed Science Conference” was organized by Weed Science Society of Pakistan hosted by Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of the Punjab, Lahore. The theme of the conference was “Food Security through sustainable vegetation management” where Dean Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Saleem Haider welcomed all the worthy guests and highlighted the importance of weed control and management in Agriculture.

President of the weed science society of Pakistan, Prof. Dr. Khan Bahadur Marwat elaborated the role of society by discussing the progress made so far in the last 16 national/international conferences and endorsed the role of weeds in economic crops along with utilization of their potential in the modern world.

The chief guest, Chairman PHEC Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir expressed his broad vision and appreciated the efforts of this joint venture. Chairman Department of Food Sciences, Dr. Shinawari Waseem Ali emphasized to ensure food security by preventing crop damage and extraction of bioactive compounds as nutraceuticals.

The invited weed scientists from all over Pakistan discussed many strategies related to control and eradication of weeds in all agricultural crops. Weeds are a global threat to agriculture and the economy of farmers so their eradication from fields in an effective way is imperative. New methods for killing the weeds and their role in environment sustainability were discussed.

Use of weeds as bio-fertilizers and bio-fuels were recommended. Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, Chairman Department of weed Science, University of Peshawar thanked Dr. Shinawari Waseem Ali for actively participating and organizing this conference successfully.

Chairman PPP and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemns the firing on Polio teams near Chaman 

Karachi, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):Chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has condemned the firing on the polio team near the Chaman area of Balochistan, as a result of which a security personnel assigned to protect the polio team was martyred.

According to the statement issued by Media Cell Bilawal House, Chairman PPP said that Habib ur Rehman, who embraced martyrdom in the terror attack, is a hero of the nation, and the entire nation is with the family of the martyr. “Only after wiping out polio and terrorism from Pakistan, we will breathe a sigh of relief,” he vowed.

Education diplomacy essential for the development of SA- Dr Mukhtar

Lahore, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):Chairman Higher Education Commission of Pakistan Dr Mukhtar Ahmed has said that the countries of South Asia must take steps for educational diplomacy for the development of the region. He was addressing the closing ceremony of the 3-day international conference on ’75 years of South Asia: Past, Present and Future’ online organized by Punjab University Department of History and Pakistan Studies in Al Raazi Hall on Friday.

Former Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab Prof Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi, Dean Faculty of Arts and Humanities Prof Dr Amra Raza, Chairman Department of History and Pakistan Studies Prof Dr Mehboob Hussain, faculty members, students and researchers participated in the event.

While the Ambassador of Kazakhstan Yerzan Kustafin and Ambassador of Uzbekistan Aybek Arif Osmanov addressed online. In his address, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that quality education, housing and a pleasant lifestyle were the rights of the people of South Asia, for which universities can play their role. He said that research conducted in universities should identify problems and provide solutions.

He said that measures should be taken for the prosperity of the people by promoting peace instead of wars. While speaking online, Yerzan Kustafin and Aybek Arif Usmanov called for strengthening people-to-people ties and South Asia for the development of South Asia.

He said that work should be done for link roads to provide travel facilities among the countries. Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi said that the South Asian region could not highlight its positive identity in the world despite being the guardian of old and new civilizations, historical buildings and cultural heritage. He said that tension in India-Pakistan relations was an obstacle in bringing South Asian countries closer.

Dr Amra Raza thanked the distinguished guests and congratulated the organizers for organizing the best conference. She said that the subject of history has a special place to know and solve problems.
