With less than one week until COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, the Global Center on Adaptation is gathering global leaders to discuss expected outcomes from COP27 and to present the findings of its flagship report “State and Trends in Adaptation in Africa 2022” (STA22).

STA22 is the most comprehensive guide to assess progress on climate adaptation in Africa and provide guidance and recommendations on best practices in adapting to the effects of a changing climate and building resilience to climate shocks. The report highlights successful adaptation initiatives from the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) which have the potential to be scaled up and replicated. It also presents key policies, skills and finance gaps that must be addressed if adaptation is to be effective and reach those who need it the most.

Agenda

Opening address and report launch

  • Professor Patrick Verkooijen, Chief Executive Officer, Global Center on Adaptation

High-Level Speakers

  • Akinwumi Adesina, President, African Development Bank Group
  • Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Minister of State to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships
  • Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, African Union Commission.

Technical presentation of the report

  • STA22 Co-Directors Professor Jamal Saghir and Ede Jorge Ijjasz-Vasquez

At COP26 in Glasgow last year, the global donor community promised to double finance for adaptation from the current rate of up to a quarter of climate financial flows earmarked for the developing world. It is expected at COP27 that significant progress will be made on climate finance including the delivery of the promised $100 billion a year to assist developing countries.

This year’s report found that cumulative adaptation finance to 2030 will come to less than one-quarter of the estimated needs stated by African countries in their National Determined Contributions (NDCs). In 2019 and 2020 an estimated $11.4 billion was committed to climate adaptation finance in Africa with more than 97% of the funds coming from public actors and less than 3% from the private sector. This is significantly less than the $52.7 billion annually to 2030 it is estimated African countries will need.

To increase the volume and efficacy of  adaptation finance flows to Africa over the coming decade, the report makes a number of recommendations:

  • Financial institutions must mainstream resilience into investments they are making.
  • Policy makers and other stakeholders must build an enabling environment for adaptation investment.
  • Financial innovation for adaptation must match country-level policy and market conditions.

Sensitizing the youth on prevention from diabetes and hypertension

Lahore, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):Diabetes is one of the most serious public health concerns, especially in developing countries where the healthcare sector is under-facilitated. Health experts attribute the wide prevalence of this disease in countries like Pakistan to dietary changes, the effects of urbanization, and the adoption of a more inactive lifestyle by a significant number of people.

In response to this public health challenge, The University of Lahore and the Government of Punjab through its Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department (P and SHD) jointly conducted an awareness seminar on the causes and preventive measures of diabetes and hypertension in youth. The event was organized under the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases Program.

Dr. Sadia Salman (Endocrinologist) gave a detailed presentation on diabetes and hypertension in youth and their prevention. According to her, hypertension, often occurs alongside diabetes and obesity. She cited excessive thirst and hunger, frequent need to urinate, extreme fatigue, blurred vision, and delayed wound healing as common symptoms of diabetes. “Through regular glucose tests, one easily detects this illness and many diseases are controllable and curable in their early stages.” She observed.

During the seminar, Dr. Salman linked diabetes and hypertension. “Diabetes and hypertension often occur together and may share some common causes which may include sedentary lifestyle with excessive calorie intake, obesity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance.” She added.

She said that maintaining a healthy weight, physical activity, sticking to a healthy diet, abstinence from alcohol consumption, and smoking are effective measures in preventing both illnesses. While sharing his remarks as chief guest, Mr. Asim Raza (Additional Secretary for Vertical Programs, P and SHD) advised the students not to use frizzy drinks and junk foods.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf (Rector, UOL), Dr. Zahid Pervaiz (MS, ULTH), Dr. Syed Amir Gilani (Pro-Rector, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences-UOL), Ms Sana Abrar (Head of Event Management Cell-UOL), faculty members and students partook in this informative session. The event also attracted many other officials from P and SHD who accompanied the chief guest.

Dr. Zunaira Iqbal, a senior dental trainer observes that oral health is crucial to the overall health of pregnant mothers

Lahore, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):According to her, good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease and can contribute to overall health improvement of pregnant women.

Here is her full submission! Pregnancy may make women more prone to periodontal (gum) disease and cavities. Oral health may be considered an important part of prenatal care, given that poor oral health during pregnancy can lead to poor health outcomes for the mother and baby, because of normal physiologic changes, pregnancy is a time of particular vulnerability in terms of oral health. During pregnancy, a woman’s oral health can affect her health and the health of her unborn child.

Maintenance of oral health is an integral part of a healthy pregnancy as in this physiological phase female body goes through many hormonal changes which may affect oral health. One of these changes is increased carbohydrate consumption, especially in the third trimester that can increase the chances of plaque formation and dental decay.

Increased levels of oestrogen and progesterone increase the permeability of oral vessels and reduce immunocompetence during pregnancy, increasing the chances of severe oral inflammation.

These changes can lead to increased caries risk and gingival enlargement which can cause pulpal and periodontal harm. Nearly 60 to 75% of pregnant women have gingivitis, an early stage of periodontal disease that occurs when the gums become red and swollen from inflammation that may be aggravated by changing hormones during pregnancy. If gingivitis is not treated, the bone that supports the teeth can be lost, and the gums can become infected.

Teeth with little bone support can become loose and may eventually have to be extracted. Periodontitis has also been associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight. Dental infections in pregnancy may have dire consequences. Dental practitioners may be reluctant to treat or facial infections invasively in pregnancy due to false assumptions of the potential risk to the patient.

Many health professionals are aware of the importance of oral health, but often they do not address it as part of their provision of preconception, prenatal or well-woman care. Dental care during pregnancy is safe, and there are appropriate guidelines for the treatment of pregnant patients.

Dental visits can take place during any trimester and if urgent should never be delayed. All elective dental procedures should be avoided during pregnancy but if acute dental pain management like nonsurgical endodontic is indicated, should not be deferred.

The knowledge and attitudes of health care professionals towards promoting oral health in pregnant women play an important role in its achievement. Although a number of non-invasive preventive interventions, traditional health education is considered the gold standard for imparting knowledge and encouraging pregnant women on preventive intervention, the collaboration between the obstetric and dental teams might be an effective way of providing oral health care to pregnant women. Adequate intake of energy and nutrients constitutes positive health effects, and inadequate intake affects mother and baby health negatively.

During this period, it is necessary for the mother to take 1200-1500 mg daily calcium for herself and her babies’ bones to be healthy. During pregnancy, mothers should meet their calcium requirements by taking calcium-rich foods such as milk and dairy products and green, leafy vegetables. With a good diet and adequate oral health care, there will be no tooth problems during pregnancy.

Gynaecologists and physicians can address maternal oral health issues, probably reducing the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes through available preventive measures, early diagnosis, and appropriate management by referring to a dentist.

Electrical Engineering students publish a book on the fundamentals of Cloud Computing

Lahore, October 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):The 90s invention of Cloud Computing involves the use of a network based on remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer. All the intricacies of this Cloud Technology have been brought to light by the three students from Electrical Engineering students at UOL.

Miss Rabia Farheen, Mr. Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim, and Mr. Syed Muhammad Salman Raza Bukhari authored the book encompassing the Fundamentals of AWS, GCP, and Azure Cloud Technology, which is available on Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.

This 130-page book, split into five chapters, aptly highlights the late 90s invention of cloud technology, its working principles, merits, demerits, and information about the tech companies that provide their services in this regard. This book gives its readers the basic understanding of the Internet of Things (IoT) along with cloud computing. Moreover, it provides information about Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, as well as their advantages, virtual infrastructure, and virtual machines.

While commending this effort, Dr. Ghulam Abbas (HoD, Electrical Engineering) quoted Nelson Mandela who said: “It is always impossible until it is done”. Further, he said that by publishing their book on the international market, Mr. Ibrahim, Miss Farheen, and Mr. Salman have proven this. Dr. Abbas lauded the students for setting an example for their juniors by being devoted to their engineering studies. “Their dedication to authoring books has demonstrated that anything is achievable if done with passion. We wish them the best of luck in the future”, he added.

Ms. Farheen, Mr. Ibrahim, and Mr. Bukhari, inspired by their passion for technology, drafted this book, which, according to them, will prove helpful for students who are interested in technical studies of cloud computing, IoT, and engineering. Publication of this book depicts how students at UOL are keenly researching modern technology and how these young technological brains are gearing up to put their theories to the test in order to reinvent society.
