World No Tobacco Day

Karachi, June 09, 2022 (PPI-OT):Indus Yaqeen is a platform launched by Indus Hospital and Health Network for the youth to unleash their energies and power to shape our society. Recently Indus Yaqeen, in partnership with the Voices Against Tobacco (VAT) team, incorporated VAT as a project for the youth to take up and play their part in reducing tobacco usage in Pakistan. Voices Against Tobacco is an initiative to empower Pakistan’s youth to take ownership of their health and future through awareness of tobacco control and positive policy change.

To commemorate World No Tobacco Day, the VAT team collaborated with Indus Yaqeen and conducted ten sessions about tobacco hazards and control for KASB Institute of Technology students. These were in-depth sessions explaining the alarming situation of tobacco use in our country. Tobacco products are not only destroying our health but also our environment and economy.

The students also played their part by signing the petition to increase the tax on tobacco by 30%, reducing the number of smokers, saving the lives of 348,000 future smokers, and increasing the tax revenue by PKR 19 billion. This will help bring Pakistan closer to achieving Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This petition will be forwarded to the policymakers to make a noise that Pakistan’s youth do not want tobacco to be easily accessible to anyone.

On May 31, 2022, around 600 KASB Institute of Technology students participated in a poster competition arranged by the VAT team to raise awareness about the harmful effects of consuming tobacco. The students showed an overwhelming response to the poster competition, came forward with their creativity, and made exciting and effective posters. They volunteered to engage in effective dialogue and serve as upstanding and compassionate individuals for the betterment of society.

Lahore, June 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Auditor General of Pakistan (DAGP), on June 1, 2022, signed a contract with the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) UK in collaboration with the University of Lahore for an aggressive human resource development program in which DAGP aims at developing the skills, capacity and knowledge of its personnel.

This landmark initiative will equip them in tackling requirements as well as challenges of modern day Public Financial Management (PFM), accounting and auditing. The DAGP being the Supreme Audit Institution of Pakistan understands the critical role it plays in improving PFM systems by ensuring transparency and accountability, and thereby contributing to good governance in Pakistan.

The fields of public finance, accounting and auditing have a trajectory of continuous development and innovation which require attaining new skills and learning new approaches to keep abreast of these new demands. The Government of Pakistan, in line with its development prospects and Vision 2025, needs financial, accounting and auditing professionals which can modernize the public sector and propel this public sector into the future. This development is also aligned with UN SDG 2030 and would have an impact on all 17 SDGs due to better financial management and strengthening of institutions.

With this in the focus, the new initiative of DAGP in collaboration with CIPFA and the University of Lahore will introduce Chartered Public Finance Accountants to the public sector. It will further impart expertise in nine thematic areas including information system audit, forensic audit, large scale industrial audit, education audit, health audit, environment audit, Energy sector audit, audit of Sustainable Development goal, etc. This initiative will result in the desired paradigm shift to achieve the goals of good governance and holistic oversight by the Public Accounts Committee.
