Meeting of the Foreign Minister with Foreign Minister of Turkey

Karachi, June 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was hosted over dinner by H.E. Mevlut Cavusoglu, Foreign Minister of Republic of Turkey, in Ankara today. While thanking his Turkish counterpart for the warm hospitality, the Foreign Minister noted that the bilateral relations between the two countries were grounded in love and affection that the two peoples had for each other.

The two Foreign Ministers held an all-encompassing exchange of views on a range of subjects and took stock of the ongoing cooperation in various fields. The Foreign Minister underlined that the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) and the Strategic Economic Framework (SEF) continued to serve as useful mechanisms for taking bilateral relations to a higher plane. Pakistan looked forward to the session of HLSCC later this year in Turkey. The Foreign Minister thanked the Turkish Government for its steadfast support and principled position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

The two Foreign Ministers also exchanged views on regional issues. The Foreign Minister appreciated Turkey’s contribution towards peace and security in its immediate neighbourhood and beyond. On Afghanistan, the Foreign Minister underscored the need for continued engagement between the international community and the interim Afghan government to achieve shared objectives of peace, stability and progress in Afghanistan.

The Foreign Minister also appreciated the constructive role of Turkey in the Ukraine crisis and personal efforts of the Turkish Foreign Minister in promoting dialogue and diplomacy. The Foreign Minister is accompanying the Prime Minister on an official visit to Turkey. It was the second meeting of the two Foreign Ministers in less than a month.

Pakistani Higher Education Institutes sign partnership agreements with UNESCO’s Centre for the futures of higher education at the IIOE National Centre, UET Lahore

Lahore, June 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, as the National Centre of International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) in Pakistan, organized an agreement signing ceremony with its partner universities in Pakistan to collaboratively facilitate the quality futures of digital transformation of higher education system to jointly pave the way to support Online and Blended Teaching and Learning (OBTL) by incorporating capacity building and competencies enhancement efforts for university teachers at national level.

Besides, a certificate distribution ceremony for the IIOE courseware competition was also held to handover the awards among Pakistani winners. The event kicked off with the opening remarks of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar, Mr. LYU Feng; Chief of Asia Pacific Program Office Ms. Li Fan, and Director KICS Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood briefed on the introduction and plans for upcoming events of IIOE National Centre Pakistan situated at UET Lahore. Mr. Lyu Feng emphasized that IIOE National Centre for Pakistan, established at UET Lahore, will streamline the future work and coordination by implementing various upcoming projects with respect to teachers’ capacity building and professional development, to expand quality educational resources and content, to strengthen domain-specific research and knowledge sharing, to promote blending teaching and learning, and to boost the poll of Pakistani experts of digitalized higher education at world arena.

Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza, Vice Chancellor LCWU, Prof. Dr. Zubair Shaikh, President of Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Karachi, Dr. Aisha Mehmood from the University of Education Lahore, signed the agreement representing their universities. Ms. Sadia Nawaz and Dr. Aisha Mahmood from the University of Education got the 1st prize whereas Dr. Muhammad Umair Ahmad Khan, and Dr. Sayyed Mohsin Ali Kazmi from UET Lahore got the 2nd prize in the IIOE courseware competition. Mr. Hassan Adeel Shehzad, Programme Specialist from UNESCO-ICHEI, presented the gifts to Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar, Vice-Chancellor UET Lahore and Dr. Waqar Mahmood, Director KICS, and received souvenir from respected Vice Chancellor and Director KICS.

Atlas Group Leadership visits LUMS to Discuss Partnerships

Lahore, June 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):Mr. Iftikhar Shirazi, Chairman, Shirazi Investments (Pvt.) Ltd. and Atlas Foundation, and Mr. Ali Shirazi, President, Atlas Battery Ltd. visited LUMS on May 18 to discuss potential avenues of collaboration between the University and the Atlas Group. They met the University’s senior leadership including Syed Babar Ali, Founding Pro Chancellor; Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood, Pro Chancellor; Mr. Shahid Hussain, Rector; Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor and Director Advancement, Ms. Nuzhat Kamran.

The foundation of the Atlas Group was laid in 1962 with the establishment of Shirazi Investments (Pvt.) Limited by the founder, the late Mr. Yusuf H. Shirazi. Today, Atlas is a diversified group dealing in engineering, power generation, financial services and trading. It consists of seven public limited companies of which five are quoted on the Stock Exchanges in Pakistan and seven are private limited companies.

LUMS has a long history of association with the Atlas Group, more specifically with the late Mr. Yusuf H. Shirazi who was one of the founding members of LUMS and served on the University’s Board of Governors for many years. In the past, Mr. Shirazi and Atlas Foundation have been consistently supporting financially needy scholars at LUMS. The participants also discussed how the University has been at the forefront of developing industry-academia partnerships which have acted as a key enabler for it to promote country-wide access to high quality education in Pakistan.

Ms. Kamran gave an overview of the LUMS journey over the last three decades. While highlighting the University’s effort to be accessible to talent across the country, she commented, “Two areas of focus for the university have been increasing accessibility and diversity at LUMS and in doing so, we have been setting standards for other universities to follow.”

Dr. Ahmad appreciated the Atlas Group and the Shirazi family’s continuous support towards LUMS and its many initiatives. He stated that the support of industry partners allows the University to keep its promise of providing a chance to gifted students from disadvantaged backgrounds attain world-class education from one of the premier institutions of the country. He highlighted the University’s ‘Learning Without Borders’ philosophy and stressed on the importance of inclusion and accessibility.

Mr. Hussain provided a holistic overview of all the work currently being done at LUMS through its schools, centres and offices. Syed Babar Ali outlined the current and future roadmap of the University for the next 35 years and reiterated the importance of strengthening the partnership between the two organisations and spoke about the importance of this collaboration in making an impact in Pakistan.

Training on Amazon Dropshipping

Lahore, June 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Management, HRM and Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management Studies arranged a workshop on “How to Generate Entrepreneurial Income from Multiple Sources – Training on Amazon Dropshipping?” on 22nd April 2022 for the BBA students studying the Entrepreneurship course. The course instructor and session organizer is Ms. Ambreen Khursheed.

Mr Zeeshan Tariq (CEO and Founder of ECommerce Dropshipping) was invited to enhance students’ knowledge about Amazon Dropshipping. He delivered an informative session on how to earn using the platform of Amazon Dropshipping in Pakistan. With his successful background and diverse experience working at Amazon, he emphasized that students should be independent and manage their expenses. He introduced students to the purpose of amazon dropshipping, its benefits, the amazon dropship business model, Amazon from Pakistan and how to become an Amazon seller from scratch and the implementation.

He highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship and product hunting in this modern world where unemployment is the major problem increasing due to lack of job opportunities. In the end, Dr Faisal Mustafa (Dean, FOMS) and Ms Ambreen Khursheed (Senior Lecturer, UCP) concluded the session with a vote of thanks. Dr Faisal presented the souvenir to Mr Zeeshan. Through a detailed question and answer session, the students showed great interest and inquired about the Amazon account creation and product hunting process. The session was followed by a meeting with Mr Zeeshan Tariq, Dr Faisal Mustafa and Ms Ambreen, where mutual interest and collaboration were discussed.

Excitement builds ahead of inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup as Qualifier begins

Dubai, June 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):The stage is set for the beginning of qualification for the inaugural edition of next year’s ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, setting the tone for an exciting build up where the future stars of the women’s game will showcase their talents in front of the world.

The ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup on South African soil sees back-to-back women’s events take place in the space of two months where the stars of tomorrow are followed by the icons of today’s game in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

The 16-team U19 Women’s T20 World Cup takes place in January 2023 and will include 11 Full Member nations Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe already confirmed as automatic qualifiers.

An additional four spots will be determined by a regional qualification process where 19 teams across four regions will battle it out, with the winner of each qualifier confirming their place in the World Cup. Completing the line-up the remaining fifth spot in South Africa is automatically awarded to USA by virtue of being the sole Associate Member nation eligible to compete under the ICC’s Event Pathway Participation Criteria in the Americas region.

Starting the Road to South Africa 2023 the first of the four regional events takes place in Asia, where Malaysian venues Kinrara Oval and YSD-UKM Oval, Universiti Kebangsaan in Kuala Lumpur will play host to the first ever U19 Women’s T20 World Cup qualification event. In the space of seven days between 3 and 9 June, 15 matches will be played as the hosts welcome young stars from Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand, Qatar and UAE, with the winner confirming their place in the World Cup.

The U19 Women’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will also play an important role in the 100% Cricket Year of Women’s Cricket which was launched on International Women’s Day this year and aims to increase the visibility of women’s cricket, build heroes and connect more cricket fans with the women’s game.

ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said “We are thrilled to be able to support the development of young female players by holding the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa on the eve of the senior event. The ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup has been the stepping stone for so many of the world’s best male players, so we are excited to see how the inaugural U19 women’s edition will drive the growth of women’s cricket and showcase the future stars of the game.

“We look forward to working with Cricket South Africa and to celebrate another important milestone in the development of the women’s game.”

Speaking on the upcoming Asia Qualifier in Malaysia, Asia Regional Development Manager Aminul Islam remarked “We are embarking on a very exciting journey where we will see some of the most promising young female talent in Asia competing in Malaysia this week. The participating teams are all hopeful of making history by competing at the first-ever ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, and there’s no question we will see some excellent cricket take place to determine who qualifies.

“As part of the ICC Asia event legacy there will be an opportunity for participants to attend a high performance seminar during the tournament which includes sessions on performance analysis and feedback training for coaches, talent identification and a workshop on how to increase the competitiveness of teams at regional level.

“I would like to thank the Malaysia Cricket Association for their support in hosting this landmark event.”

The three remaining regional Qualifiers will take place later in 2022; the East-Asia Pacific Qualifier will feature Indonesia and PNG battling it out in a three-match series in July, the Europe Qualifier will be contested in a similar format between Netherlands and Scotland in August, while nine teams will participate in the Africa Qualifier in September.

Qualification Structure

16 Teams will compete in the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in January 2023.

Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe automatically qualify for the event, with the remaining five spots available through Regional Qualifiers.

Each ICC region will host one Regional Qualifier in 2022, and the winner of each will secure a place in South Africa.

USA are the only country eligible to participate from the Americas region, meaning they automatically qualify without the need for an Americas Qualifier to be held.

LUMS Community Celebrates University’s 35th Anniversary

Lahore, June 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):On May 20, 2022, LUMS leadership, faculty and staff gathered to commemorate the University’s 35th anniversary. This exciting evening was the perfect opportunity for the community to come together, reminisce, and celebrate their achievements.

Jointly organised by the Human Resources department and the Office of Advancement, the event recognised outstanding faculty and staff members for teaching and service excellence, as well as emeritus faculty for their exemplary contributions to LUMS. It also featured a lucky draw, generously sponsored by Pepsi, L’Oréal and Zephyr through the support of alums, Saad Munawar Khan (MBA ’06), Senior Director Franchise and Key Accounts, PepsiCo; Junaid Murtaza (BSc ‘08), Country Managing Director, L’Oréal Pakistan; Alyshan Parvez (BSc ’19), Brand Manager, L’Oréal Pakistan, and Mussaid Hanif (MBA ’88), CEO, Zephyr.

Ms. Nuzhat Kamran, Director, Office of Advancement, and a graduate of the University’s first MBA batch, extended a warm welcome to the attendees. “Congratulations to everyone for 35 years of excellence of this great university! I have always been drawn to this institution, and have marvelled at how it has forged ahead, blazing new travels in unchartered territory. The University’s entire journey makes me very proud,” she said.

In his address, Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, LUMS, acknowledged the University’s founders for their vision of creating a world-class institution that forwards accessible education. He also shared highlights of some of the University’s endeavours and major accomplishments over the past few years. Commending the efforts of the entire LUMS community, he said, “These incredible achievements are only possible because of the dedication and forward-looking perspectives of our staff, faculty, administrators, and students.”

Sharing the direction and priorities for the coming decades, Dr. Ahmad added, “As we look to the future, we remain committed to strengthening our research intensity and teaching excellence, governance, interdisciplinarity, platform learning and above all, student experience.”

He then presented the awards to the recipients of the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Ms. Angbeen Mirza and Drs. Zubair Khalid, Ali Raza, Muhammad Tariq, and Momin Ayub Uppal from the inaugural cohort of 2020-21. This year’s cohort included Drs. Haniya Azam, Imran Cheema, Muhammad Hamad Alizai, Rahman Shah Zaib Saleem, and Syed Zahid Ali.

Dr. Haniya Azam, speaking on behalf of all the Teaching Excellence Award winners, appreciated the initiation of such awards as they recognise and celebrate the teaching profession. Ms. Natasha Sohail Barlas, Mr. Muhammad Umar Brar, Mr. Muhammad Faisal Haroon, Ms. Shandana Mehdi, Mr. Hafiz Muhammad Rizwan and Mr. Tariq Sheikh were also recognised as Winners of the inaugural Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Service Excellence. Speaking on behalf of all the Service Excellence Award winners, Mr. Sheikh reflected on his over 30-year career with LUMS and the lessons he has learnt.

Six LUMS faculty members, Drs. Anjum Nasim, Anwar Khurshid, Jamshed H. Hasan Khan, Ehsan Ul Haque and Syed Zahoor Hassan, who were conferred the ‘Professor Emeritus’ title for their exemplary service and contributions to the University, were also recognised at the event and presented with shields.

Dr. Zahoor Hassan represented the cohort and shared a few words, “I first came in contact with the LUMS administration in 1986 when I attended a marketing class. Once I left that class, it was clear in my mind that I want to be a part of this effort. We have come a long way. Our culture and values have enabled us to get this far. The challenges today are bigger, but so are the opportunities,” he said.

In honour of Dr. Ahmad being named the AIB International Educator of the Year, Rector, Mr. Shahid Hussain, presented him with an award and said, “This award is a great recognition for Dr. Ahmad’s career. I thank him for what he has done for LUMS and continues to do; his ideas and vision to take this university forward are reflected in a lot of what is going on at LUMS today.”

While addressing the audience, Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood, Pro Chancellor, reflected on the LUMS journey and said, “It is a pleasure to have a gathering like this. 35 years on, we are still going strong and growing in terms of strength, diversity, courses, and academic excellence. I would like to thank the Vice Chancellor, and the support staff and faculty, who are the stalwarts of this institution.”

He added that the University’s founders had set a strong vision for LUMS and set the bar high for its success. “Let us honour them by keeping the same spirit, same values, and the same pursuit of excellence for decades and decades,” he said.
