NAQSH Arts and Fashion Festival 2022

Swabi, May 25, 2022 (PPI-OT):NAQSH Arts Society under the Student Affairs Department organized National Arts and Performing Arts Competition, Irtiqa’22. Naqsh Arts Society held its 17th National Arts and Performing Arts Competition, Irtiqa’22, from the 20th to the 22nd of May 2022. The event was a resounding success, as it boasted close to 150 participants from universities such as Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD), National Textile University, Comsats Islamabad and Comsats Lahore to name a few. Along with the participants, Naqsh also welcomed its Alumni from previous batches to witness how well Naqsh and GIK have progressed since their graduation. The 3-day event featured lots of exciting modules and was filled with astounding performances from its participants. The event was divided into the following three sections.

Mimes – Theatrum:

On the opening night of the event, the Mimes competition was held in the AHA Auditorium. The performers were playing to a full house that night as the Auditorium was filled to the brim with participants and GIK-ians alike. The show featured seven mimes in total, of which four were performed by different participating teams and the rest were performed by members of Naqsh. The night featured enchanting performances which frequently brought the audience to their feet and the audience showed their appreciation by loud cheering and thunderous rounds of applause. The standout performance was from National Textile University which was a one-man play about the issues faced by transgenders in our society. The performance even received special appreciation from our judge for the mimes competition, Ma’am Zainub Mawaz, and naturally ended up winning the best actor award at the closing ceremony. Ma’am Zainub also complimented the organising team for their efforts and how the quality of mimes at the show had surpassed her high standards.

Naqsh Boulevard – Fashion Show:

On the evening of the second day, Naqsh hosted its most coveted and highly anticipated Fashion Show at the Faculty Club. Although the event started after sundown, the preparations for it started not long after sunrise. A lot of effort was put into the set-up, and in the end, the arrangements were a sight to behold, a ramp fit for any fashion show around the world. The participants themselves were also nothing short of professional, some of the dresses by the designers were so exquisitely made that it made even the judges doubt that they were store-bought. Apart from the designers, the models walked on stage with such charisma and flamboyance that the audience was truly captivated. The show also included dance performances by members of Naqsh which received a delightful response from the audience. All in all, the Fashion Show proved once again why it’s the marquee event of not only Irtiqa but of all the National level competitions held in GIK.

Fine Arts Competition:

The fine arts competition at Irtiqa was spread over two days as it contained thirteen modules such as Portrait, Mixed Media, Glass Painting, T-Shirt Design etc. The fine arts modules showed the pinnacle of creativity and imagination of participants, with the artists showcasing a great understanding of colour and tremendous command over artistic mediums. The resulting art pieces were all then displayed in the Barber’s Building for evaluation and exhibition. The judges walked around the exhibition for a long time before choosing whom should crown the winner, as each art piece was so well made that it was hard to pick one over the other.

Closing Ceremony:

The closing ceremony took place on the evening of the third day after the results from all the modules had been compiled and the awards were ready to be handed out. The closing ceremony was graced by our esteemed judges, Mr Fazale Sittar Durani and Mr Kausar Iqbal. Along with our Advisor and DSA, Mr Imran Khan, and our ADSA, Mr Sabahat Hussain. Without the support of these two, our event would not have taken place.

The judges mentioned in their closing remarks how well the event was handled, appreciating the hosts for a wonderful stay and also encouraging GIK to explore more degree options for arts and design. In response, Mr Imran Khan said the GIK is already planning more degree options and how engineering and design already go hand in hand.

The judges then presented shields and certificates to all the winners, with PIFD emerging as the overall best delegation having won the majority of the available awards. Although the event itself lasted only 3 days, the memories and friendships created during this time are sure to last a lifetime.

Valuable Tips from a Graduating Senior

Karachi, May 25, 2022 (PPI-OT):Before the degree is conferred upon me and with the graduation just around the corner, I come bearing some essentials for university life; things I wish I knew in my first semester but learned along the way, sometimes by the support of my peers, instructors, and colleagues and sometimes the hard way.

To all my folks

Avail a free subscription to premium versions of a multitude of online software and Apps

You can get a free subscription to premium versions of a multitude of online software and apps simply by claiming the education pack from Github. This includes, but is not limited to, (design people, hear up) access to Canva’s Pro tier! All you need is your official university ID to get the student benefits. You can find the link to the student developer pack below:

https://education.github.com/pack

You can also find free versions of many other creative softwares. Just try asking around from your peers or the IT Department. Do not spend sums of money on softwares that you can easily find online or from a colleague.

Save your work, create backups, use storage devices and tools

There is nothing more excruciating and terrible than having your laptop give up on you just before your assignment deadline or right at the time when you are working on an unsaved project. Technical difficulties and device issues are inevitable. Do not wait up until they fall upon your head to do something about it. Save your work every now and then if working offline. Start using online workspaces such as that Google Workspace or Microsoft Office 365. Use storage devices and tools that are available online for free like Google Drive, OneDrive, Zotero etc. Just remember you have been provided with 1 terabyte of storage. Make use of it.

Quick Tip: Remove the burden from your laptop or device and transfer some of it to the one drive. The most fool proof option is to rely on cloud storage.

Do not wait till your degree audit arrives to see what requirements you have fulfilled and what are left.

Make an excel sheet for yourself from day 1 and list down all the requirements for your own record. The 4-year grid will help you out in this. Double-check your audit with your list and visit your advisor before enrollment to check for any discrepancies.

Take advantage of the Liberal Core and free electives.

Choose interdisciplinary courses. They broaden the way you think and allow you a wider spectrum and grasp over things. You will undoubtedly come across a lot of things that will intellectually challenge you and push you out of your comfort zone. Take time to understand them. Sit through them. You do not necessarily have to embrace them but try to co-exist with them.

It is okay to not pursue a course if it is not working out for you.

You are allowed to drop it and no one can stop you. You can take it another semester. Do not overburden yourself just for the sake of pushing yourself. The next iteration of the course might work out for you even better.

Take a break.

Listen to your body. All-nighters are not cool. If anything, they only push you to the point of burnout. Proper sleep and modest eating is what will get you through the day without putting strain on your mind while also not hindering your performance. You don’t have to study all the time. Rest is equally important too.

Engage and interact with students from batches above and below you.

Try to work with them whenever you get a chance (be it in academic or non-academic settings) or participate in conversations about their experiences and journey. This accelerates your learning and not only gives you a horizontal perspective on the trajectory of university life but also a vertical dimension.

As part of the student body, you will always hold a certain power over the university’s functions and policies. Make wise use of that power and employ it for the betterment of the community and voice your concerns for those who need it. This includes not just the administrative staff, the faculty members, and the student body but also, and importantly, the TCT staff.

When working in groups, set up collective norms that apply for each member.

This can include the frequency of your meetings, the timings for your meetings, division of work, and establishing roles. Take meeting minutes so everyone in the group remains informed about the progress and if need be, the instructor can also have a look at them. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. DON’T GHOST.

For my SDP Folks

Try to fulfil your SDP field practicum before the beginning of your senior year.

Best to do it in the summers or winters preceding your senior year so you can channel your focus towards the planning of your thesis, capstone, job search, or applications for grad schools. It will also allow you an insight into what kind of work environment is your true calling.

Learn as many creative softwares as you can.

Get your hands on those quant softwares. It works in the long run and allows you creative control over your work without depending on someone else or outsourcing.

Write.

Even if that means scribbling your daily routine or making notes. But write. It helps in courses which are writing intensive.

Don’t stress about jobs.

Job hunting remains to be an overwhelming, tedious, and a daunting process especially when your degree spans such a wide spectrum. Trust that Habib has prepared you well enough and equipped you with the skillset that is required of any professional environment. Remember not to compromise on remuneration packages that do not commensurate with your experience or profile. You will get there.

Never hesitate to extend support or ask for some. The previous batches have shown untiring efforts to diligently make this space loving, kind, empathetic, and accepting. The baton has been passed to you now.

Public Talk “Celebrating Africa Day”

Islamabad, May 25, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies (ISSI) had a Public Talk to celebrate Africa Day. The distinguished speakers included: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Ambassador Ali Javed, Additional Foreign Secretary Africa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan, General Nadeem Raza, NI (M), Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee; Dr. Peter Mathuki, Secretary General East African Community (EAC) and H.E. Mohammed Karmoune, Dean of the African Corps and Ambassador of Morocco to Pakistan.

Representatives from African missions in Pakistan, Pakistani missions in Africa, non-residential African missions to Pakistan, academics, members of the business community and students also joined the celebration. Stalls depicting African culture were also set up on the occasion.

While giving his remarks, the Foreign Minister first extended heartiest felicitations to the people of Africa. He said Africa day celebrates the African peoples’ heroic struggles for emancipation from colonial rule as well as the rich cultural heritage and immense economic potential. Pakistan is proud of its role in supporting African freedom movements through political and diplomatic means. Pakistan and Africa’s common history provides the basis of the mutual trust that makes both of them natural allies. He went on to highlight that Africa is home to 12 of the 25 fastest growing economies of the world. Today Africa is a powerhouse of 1.4 billion that generates a collective GDP of 2.6 trillion dollars and has become of late the world’s largest inter-trade space, he stated.

The Foreign Minister also said that Pakistan has a long and rich history of maintaining friendly relations with Africa which predates the establishment of the African Union. Pakistan has extended development assistance where needed and supported key capacity building initiatives throughout the continent. He noted that political, economic and security arrangements between both sides remained on an upward trajectory. Pakistan has resolved to further enhance trade and investment which remain below potential. It is also Pakistan’s desire to cooperate with the regional economic communities in Africa especially those lying in our closest proximity such as the East African Community and ECOWAS.

Pakistan and Africa have traditionally enjoyed close defense and security cooperation and growing cooperation in counterterrorism, which illustrates a new dimension in our overall security cooperation. In the past twenty years Pakistan has contributed over 120,000 troops and 168 Pakistani military officers and soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice while performing peacekeeping duties in the African continent. He concluded by saying, “I reiterate our firm commitment to forging a stronger partnership with Africa in all areas of mutual endeavour and I reaffirm Pakistan’s full support to the aspiration of the African people for peace, progress and development. Long live Pakistan-Africa friendship”.

During the opening session, Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Director General ISSI extended his welcome to all participants. Africa Day is a tradition the ISSI started in 2019 and is essentially to celebrate the progress African countries are making towards their economic development. He particularly thanked the African ambassadors in Pakistan as well as Pakistani Ambassadors in various African missions. He said the process of celebrating Africa day is in line with Pakistan’s mission to engage with Africa in economic and commercial domains and this event will contribute to raising awareness that relations with Africa are of paramount importance for Pakistan.

The Plenary Session was moderated by Ms. Amina Khan, Director CAMEA. During her remarks, she said that one of the main objectives of CAMEA is to identify areas of mutual interest between Pakistan and Africa and find avenues to establish and further consolidate Pakistan’s ties with the African continent through its Engage Africa policy – therefore it gives us immense pleasure to be holding today’s event as we did last year. The theme of Africa Day 2022 is “Food and Nutrition Security” – The general objective of the theme is to secure greater political commitment and investment in nutrition as well as to address the ongoing nutrition challenges not only faced by Africa but also all over the world.

Pakistan-Africa relations are deeply embedded in the moral and material assistance it has provided to the independence movements of various African states. Moreover, Africa has long been considered as a land of unexplored opportunities for Pakistan, and keeping this premise in mind, under its Engage Africa’ policy, Pakistan has been exploring a number of avenues to further strengthen its bilateral ties with African nations be it politically, economically or in the realm of defense ties. A testament of the importance Pakistan accords to Africa is evident by the opening up of new missions in different parts of Africa, and that our three latest missions have been established in Rwanda, Djibouti and the Ivory Coast.

General Nadeem Raza, NI (M) stated that Africa day represents human spirit, sacrifices, love for peace and prosperity and a will to play a significant role in the global arena. Fraternal relations between Pakistan and African nations are spread over decades. Similarities of challenges faced by both sides offer enormous scope in multiple domains, including those in defense cooperation, which is an important strain in Pakistan’s ‘Engage Africa Policy’. Pakistan has made a great contribution in African peace and stability and is among the leading troop contributing countries to date – presently more than 4000 peacekeepers are deployed in various UN missions in Africa. He reiterated firmly that bonds of goodwill and friendly partnership between Pakistan and Africa will grow in the future.

Dr. Peter Mathuk said that Ambassador Mohammed Karmoune said that Africa Day is a chance to reflect on the cooperation between Pakistan and the African continent and is an opportunity to explore the best means to move forward such as through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA). On the diplomatic front, he said, Pakistan has announced opening of new embassies in Africa and trade exchange between Africa and Pakistan has reached 4.8 billion dollars. He went on to say that Africans would like to see Pakistani investors engage in joint ventures in the fields of agriculture, banking, IT, digital economy, textiles, pharmaceuticals among other areas.

More actions are needed to boost investment and further increase the volume of trade between the two sides and to give a chance to business cooperation that can further be reinforced in areas of mutual interest. Chambers of commerce on both sides in both Africa and Pakistan can share their expertise in different areas. This includes promoting the establishment of direct maritime links, promoting links to facilitate people mobility and visiting business delegations and exploring the possibility of establishing financial institutions. People to people exchange will further promote understanding between the two sides, he said.

In his remarks on the Pakistan Government’s Engage Africa policy, Mr Ali Javed said that the future of Pak-Africa ties is in good hands. Pakistan’s increasing diplomatic presence in Africa is an evidence of this. More than 35 African nations are accredited to Pakistan but Pakistan must ensure engagement with them and work on sustaining its bilateral engagement with African nations. He further added that Counter Terrorism (CT) operations has become a very important subject globally.

Since Pakistan has also been dealing with CT, this is a very pertinent area where the two sides can cooperate. He said Pakistan is trying to promote two- way tourism and learn about new and unique cultures. He said, “we are proud that several hundred African diplomats have received training in Pakistan and as has been the case with military and naval training, there will be joint military drills in the future as well.” It is essential that Pakistan and Africa closely cooperate so that both sides benefit from the vast potential this relationship holds.

During his remarks, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman BOG ISSI said that Pakistan and Africa need to work towards turning their relationship into a substantive partnership. Some of the African countries have made good success in the promotion of human rights. The African Continental Free Trade Agreement, if fully implemented will be very beneficial. Even though many say this is the age of Asian century, I believe this will be the African century, he stated. Pakistan has very good relations with Africa and has been very supportive of the independent struggles of the African countries. Now there is a growing commercial and military cooperation where a large potential exists.

An interactive discussion followed where participants shared their views where they all applauded the achievements of the African Union. Speakers reiterated the importance of Africa and said it is one of the prime destinations for Pakistani goods and services. Speakers stated that Africa is a resource rich country and Pakistan has to engage with Africa through the many windows of opportunity particularly in the fields of energy, pharmaceutical and agriculture. Speakers also outlined how Africa will be the focus of many global economies in the future so the opportunity should not be missed out by Pakistan.
