Decision to hold students unions’ elections lauded

Karachi, January 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman and Pakistan Quami Ittehad (PQI) Vice Chairman Altaf Shakoor on Sunday welcomed the decision of holding elections of students unions in Sindh, saying the revival of student politics would bringing a positive and healthy change in our political culture.

He said student unions are in fact the nurseries of politics and leadership. He said the decision to revive student unions in Sindh is a welcome step. All other provinces should follow suit. He said the student unions should not become ‘B teams’ of political parties.

Altaf Shakoor said that for augmentation of democracy in the country, the revival of democratic activities in educational institutions is a must. He said to cultivate a better leadership for future, the elections of student unions should be held not only in Sindh but also in other provinces on regular basis. He said the present political leadership has become a dead wood and to groom a fresh, energetic and young leadership holding of regular elections of student bodies is necessary.

He said the students should also study the burning problems of the nation and country besides their academic books and they should be given the right to take part in electing their own leaders. This is the only way to give this nation a continuous supply of visionary, able, energetic and corruption-free leadership. He said the elections of student unions promote positive activities in the educational institutions and discourage the negative ones. He said Pasban wants to encourage the common man to take part in politics and reach assemblies.

Altaf Shakoor said that the PPP, PML-N, MQM-P and now the PTI have accepted the right of students to elect their own unions, but corrupt elements and people belonging to Wadera and the elite class sitting in these parties don’t want to see the young people leading the country and they have taken no practical efforts for holding elections of student unions.

Altaf Shakoor said that had the dictators not banned student unions and violated law and constitution and uphold of merit in Pakistan today this country would have been ruled by an able, clean and honest leadership. He said these elements wrongly think that with the revival of student unions, the educational institutions would face lawlessness. He said their notion is wrong because students today are more aware and more sophisticated and they believe in a healthy competition but they have no platforms to raise voice for resolving the issues of youth and hence their capabilities are being not properly channelized.

He recalled that when he, himself, was the president of the Union of the NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, the trend of copy culture and hooliganism in hostels ended and the issues of fees and transport were resolved and the NED University was listed among the best educational institutions of Pakistan.

Getting rid of Imran Khan is vital for the country: Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Karachi, January 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has warned Imran Khan of the long march on 27 February and said that he will go to people and tell them it is vital for the country to get rid of him. He should not remain in the parliament because he has lost the confidence of the people.

Addressing a mammoth public gathering at Sial Sharif on the occasion of former PTI ticket holder from NA-92, Pir Sahebzada Naeemunddin Sialvi joining PPP formally with his associates, Chairman PPP said that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto gave us four principles for the party and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir added another one. Islam is our religion, democracy is our politics, equality is our economy, all powers to the people and martyrdom is our goal, are the five principles. He welcomed Pir Sahebzada Naeemuddin Sialvi to the party of martyrs.

Chairman PPP said that Shaheed Zulfikaar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto made this party the voice of innocent to give them their rights. They faced dictators like General Ayub, General Zia and General Musharraf. Now, we will start our march from Karachi to dislodge this puppet Imran Khan and put our demands before everyone in Islamabad.

This government has destroyed the country in the name of change. We know that the deal with the IMF is not in the interest of the people as it compromises on our sovereignty. The people are bearing the brunt of this deal. Imran Khan has retracted on all his promises, be it the ten million jobs or five million houses. Imran Khan rendered people jobless, and also made them homeless in the garb of encroachment. Every stratum of the society is protesting against this selected government.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that we held Kissan marches all over the country to express solidarity with them. Our growers are thrown from pillar to post for a bag of urea. The growers are not given the appropriate support prices of their crops. This puppet has destroyed the agriculture of the country, which is the backbone of our economy.

He said that whenever the PPP is in power, from the time of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari, it gives relief to the growers, labourers, students, pensioners and the salaried class while dealing with poverty, unemployment and price-hike. During the worst recession in the world, PPP introduced the Benazir Income Support Programme and increased salaries and pensions. This brutal government neither increased salaries and pensions nor gave the growers right prices for their crop.

Chairman PPP said that economic, political and human rights are under attack by this puppet. If the people of Punjab support the PPP like they had supported Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, then Imran Khan will have no place to hide. The people will not listen to the lies of the selected because they have had enough.

The selected had come to power by saying that corruption would be eradicated but during the last three years, it has reached record-breaking heights. Transparency International has said that there is historic corruption during this government. The puppet and his ministers say that the economy is progressing but the people are not ready to listen to their lies anymore. Imran Khan is responsible for this historic price-hike.

I am witnessing your zeal and fervour, Chairman Bilawal said to the crowd. He said that he knows that the puppet government is beyond saving now. Whenever the PPP has held a long march, it has always politically harmed the tyrant and selected of the time. We will tell the people why it is necessary to get rid of this puppet and to get him out of the parliament.

Sri Lanka advance to fifth place play off as Uganda beat Scotland to finish 13th

Dubai, January 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):Sri Lanka defeated South Africa by 65 runs to advance to the 5th place play off at the ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022.

Captain and the tournament’s leading wicket taker Dunith Wellalage posted 113 for Sri Lanka as they set South Africa 233 to win.

The Proteas scored well but lost wickets cheaply as they were bundled out for 167 as Sri Lanka set up a meeting with either Bangladesh or Pakistan.

Uganda did not let the rain dampen their spirits as they beat Scotland by 51 runs in a shortened match to earn 13th place overall.

Wellalage stars with the bat to lead Sri Lanka to victory

Sri Lanka won the toss and skipper Wellalage chose to bat and it was not long before the star man was out in the middle.

Openers Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Sadisha Rajapaksa could put on only 14 for the first-wicket stand as Kwena Maphaka bowled Rajapaksa.

The left-arm seamer then dismissed Wickramsinghe three balls later before Sakuna Liyanage went for an eight-ball duck to bring Wellalage out to the middle with Sri Lanka precarious on 25 for three.

Alongside Shevon Daniel, the skipper added 62 runs before forming an even more fruitful partnership with Ranuda Somarathne, putting on 130 runs for the fifth wicket.

Wellalage was eventually dismissed by Maphaka but only after hitting 113 off 130 for his first century of the tournament.

Somarathne would end on 57 not out as Sri Lanka set South Africa a chase of 232, which would prove too much for the Proteas.

Opener Jade Smith was run out for one as Sri Lanka took regular wickets to stint South Africa’s progress.

The usually free-flowing Dewald Brevis was next to go before Ronan Hermann and Gerhardus Maree added 34 and 44 respectively to move South Africa to 112 for six.

The Proteas were scoring above the required run rate but frequent dismissals hampered their progress as the Sri Lankan bowlers split the wickets between them.

Wicketkeeper Anjala Bandara took his second stumping to dismiss Maphaka as South Africa fell 67 runs short and will now go into the 7th place play-off.

Uganda win rain-affected match to seal 13th place

The 13th-place play off between Uganda and Scotland got off to a delayed start in Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago as rain prevented the two sides taking the field for over an hour and the game was initially reduced to 45 overs a side.

Before the weather intervened, Uganda had won the toss and chosen to bat first – a decision which saw four of their top five make scores over 30.

Ronald Lutaaya top-scored with 64 adding 75 runs for the third wicket alongside captain Pascal Murungi.

Both were eventually dismissed by Jamie Cairns, two of the left arm spinner’s four caught and bowleds, on his way to the best bowling figures of the tournament with six for 24.

Cairns took the final wicket of Edwin Nuwagaba to bowl Uganda out for 226 with 14.2 overs of their innings remaining.

Charlie Tear was out for a first ball duck, with Muhaymen Majeed following him back to the dugout not soon after having both been dismissed by Juma Miyaji before Oliver Davidson and Tomas Mackintosh steadied the Scottish ship with a partnership of 46 runs.

Jack Jarvis then came in to replace Mackintosh and scored quickly as he added 37 off 33 balls but rain would intervene again with Scotland on 122 for seven and two new batters at the crease.

The weather brightened but Scotland’s task only got harder as they were now chasing the same target but only had 11 overs in which to do it.

Captain Charlie Peet played a cautious innings as he looked to stay the distance, but could not find a partner, as Rafay Khan fell for 10 and Cairns a duck before Sean Fischer-Keogh’s dismissal left him stranded on 29 not out.

Scotland ended their World Cup 51 runs short (D/L method) of Uganda finishing 14th in the tournament, meaning the Baby Cranes claim 13th spot at the ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022.
