Directorate of Sustainability and Environment Holds a Seminar on Plastic Pollution 

Islamabad, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):A seminar on the topic “Plastic Pollution” was organized by the Directorate of Sustainability and Environment, on Nov 29th, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. The purpose of this seminar was to bring the government, the corporate sector and the academia on one platform in an attempt to create a mutual understanding pertaining to the alarming Plastic Pollution issue and to discuss the possible actions plans which are both feasible and sustainable and which can tackle this issue on an emergency basis.

The guest speakers for the event were Ms. Maryam Shabbir, (Environmentalist at Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI)) and Mr. Usman Chaudhry, (Assistant Professor at FAST-National University of Computer and Emerging Science (NUCES)). Both the guests shed some light on plastic pollution and shared some interesting facts with the audience. They encouraged the students to make a conscious personal effort on reducing their plastic usage and promote reusable and sustainable resources to conserve the planet.

Book Discussion “Diplomatic Footprints” authored by Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry

Islamabad, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) in collaboration with the Department of Defense and Strategic Studies (DSS) at Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad held a discussion on the book ‘Diplomatic Footprints’ authored by Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry in the Conference Hall, Department of DSS today.

The discussants included: Dr. Shabana Fayaz, Chairperson, DSS, QAU; Prof Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, SPIR, QAU; Assistant Professor Dr Salma Malik, DSS, QAU and Air Cmd. Khalid Banuri, Former Director General, ACDA, SPD, and visiting faculty DSS, QAU.

All discussants agreed that the book is a good narrative for students of political science since it brings together theory and practice while alluding to issues of key importance for Pakistan. The initial remarks were followed by an interactive question and answer session with the present students.

Prof Bhutta celebrated at 2021 Roux Prize ceremony 

Karachi, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta’s impact on global health was celebrated at the 2021 Roux Prize seminar attended by members of the health community from around the globe. Professor Bhutta has been awarded the Roux Prize, a US$100,000 award, for turning evidence into health impact. He is the founding director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health and the Institute for Global Health and Development at the Aga Khan University; and Co-Director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, Inaugural Robert Harding Chair in Global Child Health and Policy, and a Senior Scientist in the Child Health Evaluative Sciences programme at The Hospital for Sick Children. His work has made an integral contribution to global policy to improve maternal, fetal and new-born health.

Moderated by 2019 prize winner and editor-in-chief of The Lancet Dr Richard Horton, the ceremony featured a presentation by Professor Bhutta on his life and work, as well as responses from a distinguished panel including Dr Bob Black, Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; Dr Samira Asma, Assistant Director-General for Data, Analytics and Delivery at WHO; and Dr Adil Haider, Dean of the AKU Medical College in Pakistan.

The panellists were joined by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation director Dr Christopher J. L. Murray and Roux Prize founders David Roux and his wife, Barbara. Launched in 2013 and administered by IHME at the University of Washington, the Roux Prize is the world’s largest award for evidence-based public health achievement and has drawn nominations from across the globe.

IUB observed International Day of Persons with Disabilities 

Bahawalpur, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a function was organized by the Department of Special Education, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur at the Main Auditorium, Baghdad-ul-Jadeed Campus. The children of the schools run by the Special Education Department Bahawalpur gave beautiful performances at the event. On the occasion, Vice Chancellor, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob said that today is the day of determination to do our best for the education and training of children with various disabilities in the country.

Special children are a very important part of our society. People with disabilities are performing much better than normal people in many places. He said that the Department of Special Education of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur has been activated a year and a half ago with the aim of producing teachers from here who can equip students with disabilities at modern level in schools and colleges. He said that this function has been organized in collaboration with the Department of Special Education and School Education Bahawalpur of the Punjab Government.

For people with disabilities, the collaboration of various organizations is very welcome. It is good that so many different stakeholders are gathered here today. He further said that the Islamia University of Bahawalpur would improve the special facilities provided to the students with disabilities as well as increase them further. He said these people with disabilities are a source of motivation for us. He commended all the students who performed and participated in the event and encouraged them to move forward with determination.

Speaking on the occasion, Dean Faculty of Education Prof. Dr. Akhtar Ali said that special care is taken for the education of special people all over the world. The Islamia University of Bahawalpur is taking several steps in this regard. We want to encourage these disabled children. They have to be given the respect and status in society that they give to normal people. They are also normal human beings like us, they have just been deprived of a single blessing. Chairperson Department of Special Education Prof. Dr. Nasreen Akhtar said that the Islamia University of Bahawalpur is focusing on special education.

Today, children from different educational institutions are participating in the event with us. Special children have demonstrated their abilities on stage. Looking at the performances of these children, no one can say that they are facing any disability. The event was attended by CEO Education Bahawalpur Zahoor Ahmed Chohan, District Officer Special Education, teachers of special education institutions and a large number of students with disabilities. At the end of the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob distributed shields among the organizers of the event.

All Pakistan Nutritionists Convention 2021 held at IUB

Bahawalpur, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):All Pakistan Nutritionists Convention was held at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Nutritionists from all over the country participated in the convention. Malnutrition is one of the major causes of malnutrition in children. About 45% of the babies born are underweight and malnourished. A large number of pregnant women suffer from malnutrition. The Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur was established a year ago. Additional Commissioner Bahawalpur Mahar Khalid in his address said that Punjab government is paying special attention to the health sector and various centres have also been set up.

According to the vision of Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob, Vice Chancellor the Islamia University of Bahawalpur seminars and discussions on useful topics for the society continue and holding seminars on this topic is a very welcome process and there should be such awareness seminars. Muawiyah Hassnain, Chairman, All Pakistan Nutritionists Society, said that the whole world is moving forward by overcoming the shortage of nutrition. The United Nations has set a target of 2030 for all countries to overcome malnutrition.

Our children, pregnant women, lactating women suffer from malnutrition and malnutrition. The government should pay more attention to this. Prof. Dr. Haji Muhammad Shoaib, Chairman, Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, said that this department was established a year ago. We do our best to educate and train people on how to overcome malnutrition. The Islamia University of Bahawalpur is playing a key role in this regard. On this occasion, various pharmaceutical companies and nutritionists also set up special stalls for the information of teachers, students and general public.
