UAE set to host ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier

Dubai, November 20, 2021 (PPI-OT):The United Arab Emirates will be looking to make the most of home conditions while drawing inspiration from teams at the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 as they commence their campaign in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier against Malaysia on Monday.

Teams are only two steps away from playing in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa. The winners of the six-team tournament here get to play in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2022 from which teams can book their places for South Africa.

UAE captain Chaya Mughal can feel the anticipation as the two ICC Academy grounds in Dubai Sports City get ready to host Bhutan, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Malaysia and Nepal.

Chaya Mughal: “Playing in the World Cup is a dream for every cricketer and knowing that it’s just two steps away will certainly push everyone to give their best. The team is anticipating a successful campaign with all the positive vibes around.

“It has been extremely motivating to see the Associate teams in World Cups. We had five Associate teams in the Men’s T20 World Cup this time and two of them made it to the Super 12s. This is certainly a platform where each player dreams to showcase their talent.”

Bhutan captain Yeshey Choden is hoping to put behind the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic as they get to play in an ICC event.

Yeshey Choden: “Playing in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers is a dream come true. We had to train under strict COVID-19 protocols, which was challenging, as most of us were in-country service as volunteers. We worked hard to get match fit and I am very thankful to our Board for giving us the opportunity and investing in us.

“Till now we had been playing Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournaments where only teams from Asia compete. But playing in ICC events gives us a chance to play against teams from around the globe. So, winning this tournament gives us more opportunities to showcase our talent and we are looking forward to it.”

Kuwait captain Ana Sharif Tariq is hoping to inspire more girls to take to the sport by performing well.

Ana Sharif Tariq: “We are overwhelmed to be honest. The girls have been working hard, they are pumped up and determined to do their best. We are looking forward to utilizing this opportunity to gain some much-needed exposure and bring glory to Kuwait.

“We hope to inspire many young girls and women to take up the sport, adding to the overall pool of players which will enhance development domestically and pave way for a brighter future in women’s cricket.

Malaysia captain Winifred Anne Duraisingam sees this event as a major opportunity for her team.

Winifred Anne Duraisingam: “It’s a huge chance for Malaysia to move to the next level, which is the World Cup 2023. As captain, I am excited to lead my team to the next step.

“As a team, we have gained more knowledge in every way possible. It is also good to see Associates move a step closer to a higher level of cricket. It will be an honour for us to stand alongside other Associate Members and play in the World Cup.

Nepal captain Rubina Chhetry Belbashi sees the tournament as an opportunity of a lifetime.

Rubina Chhetry Belbashi: “I am very excited to play in the Qualifiers because it has been a dream for me and my team for the past 15 years to qualify and play in the World Cup. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us.

Hong Kong captain Ka Ying Chan can’t wait to get back to international cricket.

Ka Ying Chan: “I’m really looking forward to it! It’s been so long since we’ve been able to play international cricket. I can’t wait to get back out there. It’s an honour to take part (in the tournament) and it’s a great opportunity to play against different countries.

“I want to thank all the people who have been working behind the scenes to make sure the team is prepared and also to the team’s families for supporting us.”

Hasan Ali reprimanded for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Dubai, November 20, 2021 (PPI-OT):Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first T20I against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Friday.

Hasan was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Hasan, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 17th over of Bangladesh’s innings, when Hasan gave an inappropriate sendoff to batter Nurul Hasan after dismissing him caught behind the wicket.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh team have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate in the match as they were ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Hasan and Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Neeyamur Rashid of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees and ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department as per the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. There was no need for formal hearings.

On-field umpires Sharfudoulla Ibne Shahid and Masudur Rahman, third umpire Gazi Sohel and fourth official Tanvir Ahmed levelled the charges.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Stage set for ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier supported by Dream 11

Dubai, November 20, 2021 (PPI-OT):The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021 supported by Dream 11 gets underway in Harare on Sunday with more at stake than just sealing places in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 in New Zealand.

Apart from the three sides who will join the five who have already qualified for the World Cup, two others will also clinch places in the next ICC Women’s Championship (IWC) along with the top five from last time, as the number of teams in the third cycle of the IWC goes up from eight to 10.

If teams like India and South Africa had figured in the 2017 Qualifier in Colombo, the nine-team tournament this time includes former T20 World Champions the West Indies (in Group A along with Sri Lanka, Ireland and the Netherlands) and World Cup regulars Pakistan (in Group B along with Bangladesh, Thailand, Zimbabwe and the United States).

The final placings will be decided in a Super Six stage comprising three teams each advancing from the two groups. The teams making it to this round will carry over points gained in the preliminary league against other teams that advance to the Super Six stage.

West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor looked forward to the tournament while exuding confidence on the back of an impressive 3-0 series victory over Pakistan this month.

West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor: “We’re definitely looking forward to kickstarting the Qualifiers. The expectations are pretty high for us to finish number one or at least in the top three and be one of the eight teams in New Zealand next year. With that being said, we’re not taking any team for granted. We’re going to go out there and play our best cricket.

“I believe the all-round ability of our team is our strength, our batting is peaking at a good time heading into the Qualifiers, which was exemplified with two centuries in the recent series against Pakistan. Our bowlers are showing that they can defend the scores posted by the batters. So, we are looking forward to a competitive but enjoyable tournament.”

Zimbabwe captain Mary-Anne Musonda, on the other hand, spoke for teams eyeing places in the IWC, which ensures exposure against top sides over the next three-year cycle.

Zimbabwe captain Mary-Anne Musonda: “These qualifiers are very important for us. We have got a shot at qualifying for the World Cup, which is a very big platform and something that we want, and the opportunity of finishing in the top five, which will mean we will have tours as part of the ICC Women’s Championship. That would be good for our team – getting to play top sides.

“Hosting (this event) is such a great thing for us – home conditions and fans cheering for us! We have a fair chance of making it to the top five and fighting through to get to the top three. We are hoping to start by winning our two games in Group B, aiming to take it one game at a time and hope for the best in the end. We have a good mix of youth and experience in our side.”

Zimbabwe play Thailand on the opening day at Harare Sports Club while Bangladesh and Pakistan play at the Old Hararians Club simultaneously.

All matches start at 09h30 local time and will be live-streamed on ICC.tv. Ball-by-ball scoring will be available on icc-cricket.com.
