Congratulatory Message on 69th Anniversary of The China University of Geosciences 

Wah Cantt, November 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):Dr Asma Arif, Department of Economics, University of Wah offered a note of congratulation and acclaim on the 69th Anniversary of The China University of Geosciences, Beijing (CUGB), on 09 November, 2021. Dr Asma, being an alumna of CUGB and the recipient of “An Outstanding International Student Award”, delivered a video and print message online on the occasion. Her messages were published and played on the CUGB WeChat page.

Dr. Arif expressed her best wishes for the time-tested Pak-China relationship and opined that exchange of students and faculty can further promote the R and D collaboration between the two countries. In her published message, she expressed her gratitude to CUGB as well as UW for providing her the encouragement and support. She wished her Alma Mater a happy anniversary and appreciated the efforts of International Office CUGB in assisting international students remarkably. Dramatic Performance on Arms and the Man 

Wah Cantt, November 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):English Speaking Club, Department of English, UW staged a dramatic performance on famous comedy play Arms and the Man by George Bernard Shaw on 08 November, 2021. English Speaking Club has recently been constituted with the aim to organize literary and recreational activities to improve the speaking skill of the students and give them a break from academia. It is a platform where the students can better realize their potential, talents and enhance their teamwork skills.

Students from BS 5th semester, Department of English displayed distinct dramatic skills and performed exquisitely. The Chairperson of English Department, Dr. Rasib Mahmood is the Chairman of the English Speaking Club. Prof Dr Jameel-Un Nabi, Vice Chancellor, UW graced the ceremony as chief guest. He appreciated the efforts of Dr. Rasib and the students and provided them with suggestions for further improvements in future.

Higher Education prerequisite for Sustainable Economic Growth, Dr. Shaukat Hameed Khan 

Swabi, November 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan, renowned scientist and former member of the Planning Commission of Pakistan has said that contemporary higher education is a prerequisite for a true and durable economic progress and prosperity of the country. This he stated while delivering a lecture at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on Tuesday. Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid, Rector GIK Institute Pro-Rectors, Deans, Directors and students attended the lecture.

Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan who retired from Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission as a chief scientist and also remained Rector of GIK Institute said modern education is the only panacea of all Pakistan’s confronting problems and new emerging challenges. The most interesting part of his lecture was that how he spent his years of unemployment when he returned from the United Kingdom after completing his PhD. “I wanted to move back to Europe but my teacher Khawaja Masood advised me to stay in the country,” he recalled.

He spoke about how he got a job in Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and how he contributed to Pakistan in different capacities. “I was the first scientist of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) to invent the first ever laser in the country’s history. Now, about 500 engineers and experts in PAEC work in this field,” he said.

He stressed on indigenous result-oriented research and stressed on complete determination and concentration. The technical capability and social environment could make true the dream of progress and prosperity, he said. He also spoke in detail about the research publications papers and presented the data showing how much contribution was made by the scholars of the developed and under developed countries.

He lauded the GIK Institute graduates, the lush green campus and the environment where they get the higher education and paid tributes to its founder former President of Pakistan, late Ghulam Ishaq Khan. Speaking on occasion, Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid said that Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan is a great advocator of scientific education and he was involved in the establishment of GIK Institute from the very inception.

He said: “We need your (Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan) support and guidance. We would stay connected with you,” he said. Earlier, he discussed with the Rector the fresh intake, scholarship, technical education, the disciplines offered by GIK Institute and undergraduate and graduate programs, education budget, artificial engineering, establishment of new universities, new emerging technologies and education policy, its implementation and monitoring.

Honouring Distinguished Researchers for Global Recognition 

Sargodha, November 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar organized an award ceremony to acknowledge six eminent researchers for making their mark among the top 2% researchers in a global list compiled by Stanford University here on Wednesday. The Vice Chancellor congratulated the faculty members on receiving due recognition for their scientific contribution in their respected fields and appreciated their efforts for elevating the global profile of the university.

While addressing the ceremony, Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar vowed to provide full cooperation and support to accelerate research productivity in the University. He urged the distinguished researchers to inspire and engage other university colleagues through multidisciplinary groups in joint research ventures.

During the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor awarded shields to the distinguished researchers as a token of appreciation. The faculty members from Sargodha University who received global recognition life-long and single year citation impact for their contribution in research, include, Prof Dr Farooq Anwar from Institute of Chemistry, Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz Tahir and Dr Muhammad Ashfaq from the Department of Physics, Muhammad Adnan, Prof Dr Shoaib Akhtar and Dr Abdul Malik from Faculty of Pharmacy.

Earlier this month, six faculty members and research scholars from Sargodha University made their eminence among the top 2% researchers in a global list compiled by Prof John Ioannidis of Stanford University and his team. The list featured the world’s top 2% scientists in numerous disciplines; all achievers on the list have been nominated based on the international evaluation of their research work, and are ranked based on either the life-long citation impact of their work till the year 2021 or the citation impact of their work for the single calendar year of 2020-21.
