Neesham and Mitchell take centre stage as Black Caps settle score

Dubai, November 10, 2021 (PPI-OT):It seemed nigh-on impossible that England and New Zealand would be able to recreate the drama of their last World Cup meeting – but they gave it their best shot.

While this semi-final was not decided by the barest of margins – the Black Caps staggeringly getting home with an over to spare having needed 57 from the final four – it contained an abundance of twists and turns which left neither side feeling totally in control until the outcome was decided.

And just as at Lord’s in 2019, Jimmy Neesham was at the heart of a crucial period in the contest.

Whether at the crease or on social media, Neesham has long been one of cricket’s great entertainers.

Having been at the non-striker’s end for the run out which decided the most dramatic of Cricket World Cup finals 18 months ago, Neesham took to Twitter to declare: ‘Don’t take up sport, kids. Take up baking or something’.

And it was in the pressure cooker that Neesham found himself when he entered the fray in Abu Dhabi.

The 31-year-old had watched from the dugout as hard-hitting players on both sides had found the going tough, with batters having to play themselves in before going for the jugular.

Neesham had no time for that particular luxury, with the required rate above 14 and time running out when he joined Daryl Mitchell following the quickfire dismissals of Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips.

The Black Caps needed a big over and Neesham was the man who provided it as the tide turned in dramatic style.

Both his sixes off Chris Jordan carried Lord’s parallels. The first, from the opening delivery of the over, was smacked over mid-wicket in a dismissive manner not dissimilar to the way he cleared the ropes off Jofra Archer in the infamous super over.

And the second, which saw a diving Jonny Bairstow’s knee hit the rope just before he offloaded to Liam Livingstone, carried more than an echo of Trent Boult stepping on the boundary when the 2019 final reached crunch time.

But that was then and this is now. New Zealand have moved on from their Lord’s heartache, becoming ICC World Test champions in the meantime, and were determined to keep their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup dreams alive as they seek a remarkable double.

Neesham’s blitz made them favourites to do just that, with 23 coming from the pivotal 17th over before he launched Rashid over deep mid-wicket to continue the momentum.

That was his last meaningful act, as he picked out Eoin Morgan at cover off Rashid, but in Mitchell New Zealand had a set batter ready to pick up the mantle.

The 30-year-old has made up for lost time in his international career, having had to be patient for his opportunity, and did likewise here in a perfectly-paced knock.

Having lost the company of Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson early, he initially struggled to pierce the infield and sat on 38 from 33 deliveries.

The change of pace from then on was as effective as it was devastating, with his next 35 runs taking just 15 deliveries as he steered his side home in style.

Two sixes off Woakes settled any nerves in the penultimate over, which began with New Zealand needing 20 and ended with the job done.

Fittingly, it was Mitchell who hit the winning runs – with his father, former All Black John, watching on from the stands – and a comment in the aftermath summarised what has made this Black Caps team so popular as he looked ahead to the challenge that lies ahead in Sunday’s final.

“Whoever we’re taking on, we’ll have fun,” he said.

With New Zealand in this form, they won’t be the only ones.

Hayden says momentum and energy with Pakistan, urges Australia to tour Pakistan in 2022

Dubai, November 10, 2021 (PPI-OT):Pakistan batting consultant Matthew Hayden has said his side was fully prepared and ready to face Australia who are chasing their maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. The two sides have previously met six times, including the 2010 semi-final where Australia won by three wickets. However, they are 3-3 on a head to head.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match in Dubai, Hayden said: “This is an extremely important tournament for Pakistan. Lots of hard work has gone in over the past month and we’re extremely excited to be coming into the playoffs with terrific momentum, fantastic energy and great optimism.

“We face Australia tomorrow (Thursday), a country which has been incredibly proud to set high standards in terms of delivery on trophies for its country in World Cups, and this is one trophy that it’s never got in the cabinet, so lots of high-stake matches ahead of us now.”

“I think this side has got the potential as it has shown so far in the five matches.

“The highlight was the first game that we played here in Dubai against India and how under immense pressure this side delivered. I never really understood the enormity of the pressure until I was inside the dressing room.

“I think that game really set us up for what has been a really lovely four weeks of solid work, great commitment to training, great purpose in general, and also a wonderful heart connect to Islam and how spirituality has played its role within the Pakistan team as a great guide and tool for everyone to come together.”

Hayden was unconcerned about the lack of form of Fakhar Zaman, saying he was a natural fighter.

“The fact that he was in the Navy for seven years gives you a pretty strong indication of his ability to be able to fight and fight hard.

“Not only just from a batting perspective but the contributions within a T20 setup is that you have to be, as a general policy, a two-dimensional player. Fakhar literally save five to ten runs every game, and five to ten runs within a T20 concept and batting lineup, include your own runs, maybe 20s and 30s here and there, means that overall he’s just been such an important part of the side.

“Don’t be surprised if you see something incredibly special from him on Thursday because he is smashing the ball in the nets. In particular, if you look at a potential matchup against Adam Zampa, who’s been the leading wicket-taker in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, I think that is a fantastic target, an opportunity for Fakhar to really dominate and position Pakistan in a strong competitive state.”

Hayden, himself an explosive and destructive opener, also shared his views on Babar Azam and termed him as stable batter with a wonderful temperament.

“Babar and his personality is what you see is what you get,” Hayden said, adding: “He’s very consistent and stable. He is not overly flamboyant and I would go as far as to say he is almost the opposite personality to someone like Virat Kohli, who is very animated, very passionate and very boisterous on the field. Babar has great control and a wonderful temperament.

“Babar Azam is highly talented and just to give you an insight into that talent, his ability to be able to consistently react to the ball is really second to none that I’ve seen. He picks up the line and the length of the ball quicker than the average cricketer and that’s the mark of someone that’s a very fine player.

“He doesn’t have to necessarily be stroking with any kind of increase or decrease in his temperament. He can remain pretty neutral. And then when he gets into the middle stages of the match, he also has the ability through just good cricket shots to find his natural tempo, which is a strike-rate of around 140, 150 and beyond.

“It’s a great testimony to not only his game but how he can consistently scale his performances through greater and increased strike-rate over time.”

Hayden took time to pay tribute to Dean Jones, who spent a lot of time in Pakistan for the HBL Pakistan Super League.

“I want to make special mention here of a former teammate and colleague, and that is Dean Jones. He gave a lot of himself to Cricket Australia but also to Pakistan cricket.

“His closing words to me, which I can hear in my ears, were: ‘These are my boys. This is something I’m so passionate about.’

“He was just beautifully connected to Pakistan cricket. May he rest in peace now, knowing the fact that he has left a legacy within this team, which will last not only this generation but also generations to come. If I can add any value to those closing comments from Deano that would be my greatest honour.”

Hayden welcomed Cricket Australia’s announcement to tour Pakistan for three Tests, three ODIs and one T20I in March-April 2022, and admitted one of his biggest regrets was not to play in Pakistan.

“A wonderful announcement in the last few days about Australia touring Pakistan in February, something has not been done for 24 years now. I think from an Australian cricket point of view, that is also a really significant moment, not only for Australian cricket but also for Pakistan cricket.

“It’s incredibly important that the country now embraces Pakistan and allows and supports its incredible fan-base to similar sort of passion and commitment to the great game of cricket.

“Certainly, the one regret that I have in my career is not being able to travel to Pakistan as an international cricketer, in spite of having such great and unique challenges. As an opening batsman, you want to try and face wonderful bowlers like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq and a myriad of other spin bowlers. To not have the opportunity to do that in Pakistan is a regret of mine.

“Embrace it, be a part of the future of Pakistan cricket as it’s a hugely important part of the cricket community. I’m sure they (Australia cricketers) are looking forward to traveling to Pakistan.”

Shaheens-Sri Lanka A one-day series begins on Thursday

Dambulla, November 10, 2021 (PPI-OT):Pakistan Shaheens will start their three-match one-day series against Sri Lanka A tomorrow in Dambulla. All three 50-over matches will be played in Colombo with the second and third match to be played on 12 and 15 November.

The Saud Shakeel-led Shaheens dominated the hosts in the two rain affected four-day matches in Pallekele. Pakistan batters and bowlers showcased their skills in no uncertain terms and the tourists would have in all probability won both games if rain had not played spoilsport.

Pacers Naseem Shah, Khurram Shahzad and Irfanullah Shah shared the ten Sri Lanka A wickets in the first innings of the first four-day match with Naseem taking five as the hosts were blown away for 141.

Saud scored a century, Omair Bin Yousuf contributed 93 and Kamran Ghulam made 58 runs as Shaheens responded with 324 for two declared.

The match petered out in a draw with Sri Lanka A responding with 144 for two in their second innings.

Abdullah Shafique and Salman Ali Agha hit centuries as Shaheens piled-up 394 in the first innings of the second four-day match. Naseem then led the bowling charge as the hosts were sent packing for 67 runs, the right-armer took four while Khurram took three wickets. Arshad Iqbal took two wickets.

Sri Lanka A responded with 317 for six after being forced to follow-on.

For the one-day series the Shaheens boast a formidable squad, Saud will be leading the batting charge along with Abdullah, Salman and Kamran Ghulam.

The Naseem-led bowling attack also has great talent, skill and quality to cause serious trouble to the hosts just like the four-day matches.

To Hanie Luong, receiving the Vietnam Van Thinh Phat Scholarship (VTP Scholarship) is a life-changing opportunity. Hanie, who lived most of her life on a remote highland of Vietnam, is now a 4th year Accounting and Finance student at HKU. When asked about how she felt being a scholarship recipient, she said, “Neither attending an international school nor communicating in English on a daily basis back in my home country, I had never imagined studying abroad possible. It is the VTP Scholarship that gives me the opportunity to study at one of the best research-led universities in Asia and the world.”

When asked about their life at HKU thus far, both Hanie and Martin said that it has been an incredibly fulfilling and transformational journey. As scholarship recipients, they have been given the opportunities to join cultural exchange, study and internship programmes in different countries to meet like-minded students worldwide.

Professor Bennett Yim, HKU’s Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Exchange said, “HKU is committed to nurturing future global talents who are able to make valuable contributions to the world and pursue their dreams at the same time. We believe that our supportive scholarships enable students to enjoy and live their university lives to the fullest by going on exchange, launching start-ups, competing in international competitions and by interacting with the diverse community on campus.”

To empower students to realise their dreams, the HKU Future Leaders of the Year Scholarship (FLY Scholarship) was established in 2020 for students who aspire to launch their own start-ups and make their mark in the future. Recipients of the scholarship will be awarded an amount to use as s start-up fund or to engage in start-up-related activities. In addition, recipients will have the opportunity to be coached by HKU tutors, alumni or entrepreneurs in iDendron, HKU’s dedicated centre for innovation and entrepreneurship.

“In an era where information is at your fingertips, it is more important to know how to integrate creativity and innovation. With the support of the HKU FLY Scholarship, the innovative ideas put forward by talented students can be more easily realised, thereby creating a positive impact on the community and offering value to society,” Professor Bennett Yim added.

The HKU Admissions Office will organise an online Scholarships Info Session on 12 November, 2021 for prospective international students to learn about HKU scholarships for undergraduate admissions.
