Aga Khan University launches ECD Workforce Online Hub

Karachi, October 26, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Aga Khan University’s Institute for Human Development, IHD, has launched an Early Childhood Development virtual hub to advance the wellbeing of children and families around the world. The ECD Workforce Hub aims to bridge gaps that hinder children in resource-constrained and marginalised areas from achieving their developmental potential and prevent them from being on an equal footing with their counterparts in high-resource settings. It will provide relevant information, courses and trainings to caregivers, frontline workers, policymakers, practitioners and other key stakeholders in Early Childhood Development (ECD).

Recent work by UNICEF shows that ECD receives the least resources in low- and middle-income countries, with higher education getting the most resources, and has the least well-trained personnel serving children. Investments in the sector are therefore crucial to eliminate poverty and boost holistic socio-economic development of a society.

Established through generous funding from UNICEF, the LEGO Foundation, Aga Khan Foundation, Hilton Foundation and Johnson and Johnson, the ECD Workforce Hub will focus on the most disadvantaged communities. Speaking at the unveiling event, Chief Justice Martha Koome said the launch of this ECD Workforce Hub is a momentous event given that it targets the advancement and protection of a vulnerable segment of our community: children.

“Now more than ever, there is a need for coordinated efforts among health, education, child protection, and social protection sectors to ensure holistic support for children in the early years,” said Chief Justice Koome. “Early childhood care and development is central to the lives of every family with young children. Given the Hub’s focus to children, their caregivers and the care-giving environment, its establishment resonates with our Constitution’s vision of the family serving as the foundation of the society.”

IHD’s Director Dr Amina Abubakar said the hub will translate scientific material into practical information which can be used to advance holistic child development. “More than 250 million children globally, and especially in low- and middle-income countries like Kenya, are at risk of not reaching their developmental potential due to chronic poverty, lack of access to healthcare, good nutrition and responsive care. Through this hub we plan to train the ECD workforce to provide high quality and accessible programmes and services for the most marginalised children.”

The online platform builds on previous work undertaken by IHD since its inception in 2014 through its Hilton Phase I and II projects, World Bank Early Years Fellowship project and the UNICEF/LEGO Foundation Scaling Up Playful Parenting Project.

IHD’s studies and interventions have demonstrated how good ECD practices have a lifelong impact on the economic, social and physical wellbeing of an individual and society. Arif Neky, UN Kenya Adviser on Strategic Partnerships, commended Aga Khan University on addressing some of the existing gaps around policy transformation across the country.

“Access to technical and professional development courses will enable policymakers and practitioners, frontline workers and many other stakeholders involved in the early days of a child to have a better understanding on the science of early childhood development, particularly those from impoverished and vulnerable communities in Kenya,” he said.

The ECD Workforce Hub can be easily accessed by phone, tablet or computer. There will be trainings and events which will be available on demand to all members. Stakeholders interested in joining the network can do so for free.

AKUH Walks to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Karachi, October 26, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Aga Khan University Hospital continued its support against breast cancer by arranging a ‘Pink Walk’ at the Main Campus. The purpose of the walk was to increase awareness of breast cancer in Pakistan. According to the statistics, one in every nine women is at a high risk of breast cancer. Even though the prevalence of breast cancer is high, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment show promising results for recovery.

“In Pakistan, the lack of awareness around the subject contributes to a high mortality rate, compared to global data. The growing rate of breast cancer poses an increased risk for the country. We are at the edge of a precipice; the actions we take from here will determine the outcome in the fight against breast cancer,” said Dr Om Prakash, General Surgeon and Service Line Chief, GI and Surgery.

Along with the staff, media celebrities and journalists joined hands with AKUH and pledged to increase awareness for breast cancer. “For us, every patient’s life is equally important, and timely detection helps us in providing the right care at the right time. Today, we are joined by journalists and celebrities to help us with spreading the message to more people,” remarked Dr Shahid Shafi, CEO, The Aga Khan University Hospitals, Pakistan.

Renowned celebrities and actors Ayesha Omar, Mariyam Nafees and Zhalay Sarhadi also pledged their support to the cause by leading the participants during the walk, which was held at the Sports and Rehabilitation Centre at the AKU Main Campus.

The event kicked off with a welcome address by Dr Shahid Shafi, CEO AKUH, P and Dr Om Parkash, General Surgeon and Service Line Chief of Gastrointestinal Medicine and Surgery. While the Pink Walk was the highlight of the evening, the Hospital’s breast surgeons and oncologists used this event to engage and educate the audience on the benefits of breast screening.

Consultant Breast Surgeon AKUH P, Dr Sana Zeeshan stated that early diagnosis and cure play an integral role in treating the disease. “We dedicate an entire month to spread awareness about breast cancer and mitigate the taboo surrounding the subject.”
