University of Turbat organized training workshop on “Research Projects’ Design, Execution and Methodology”

Turbat, October 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Turbat (UoT), Professor Dr. Jan Muhammad said that “Nations build and grow through extensive research. We can compete with the nations and countries of the world by promoting quality research activities in the university which enable us to become developed and prosperous economically and socially in every field of life. Our youth and faculty members are capable of writing excellent dissertations if they are provided with the best facilities for conducting quality research work. Promoting quality research work at the university is my top priority; therefore a comprehensive research project is being implemented at the university.”

He expressed these views while inaugurating the opening session of two day’s training workshop on “Research Projects’ Design, Execution and Methodology” organized by the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) at UoT’s Main Campus on 22nd and 23rd September 2021. He appreciated the efforts of Director (ORIC) Dr. Ghulam Jan and his team for organizing different workshops in the university on research and other innovative themes of a contemporary era which could help to drive the attention of UoT’s faculty members and students towards conducting quality research. The faculty members from UoT’s Main Campus and Gwadar Campus attended the workshop.

During welcome speech, expressing his views on objectives of the training workshop Dr. Ghulam Jan said that after awarding research grants to the UoT’s faculty members, the ORIC has taken the initiative to support the faculty members in executing the research projects in an effective and efficient way. He said that it was the second training workshop organized by ORIC under this project. The first workshop was organized at UoT’s Panjgur Campus on 3rd July 2021.

Separate sessions were organized for the participants from both, Faculty of Social Sciences as well as, Faculty of Life and Basic Sciences. The resource person, Dr. Liaqat Ali Channa, an Associate Professor of the English Department at BUITEMS was engaged with the participants from the Faculty of Social Sciences. Dr. Liaqat Ali Channa has done his Masters from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom (U.K.), and Ph.D. from University of Georgia, USA. While the resource person Professor Dr. Nazeer Ahmed, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences and Informatics at BUITEMS was engaged with the participants from the Faculty of Life and Basic Sciences. Dr. Nazeer Ahmed has done his Ph.D. from the University of Wurzburg, Germany.

The training workshop was comprised of different sessions which covered various themes including Research and Research Cycle, Academic Writing, Project proposals Writing, Science of Publication, the difference between Qualitative and Quantitative Research, Understanding the Mixed Method of Research Work, Learning How to Remain ‘Unbiased’ in the ‘Biased’ Process of Research and Tips for Successful Execution of any Research Project.

At the end of the workshop, sharing their views, the participants said that they found every session of the workshop very informative and knowledge-based. They demanded the university should host more sessions of the same nature in the future.

37th Meeting of the UET Senate held

Lahore, October 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):The 37th meeting of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore Senate held. Governor Punjab and Chancellor UET Lahore Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar chaired the meeting of the Senate. The meeting was held online in which the Vice Chancellor UET Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar, Deans, Chairpersons, senior faculty, and other members of the Senate participated. During the meeting, the budget estimates and action taken by the Vice chancellor regarding implementation of the budget estimates (Recurring and non-Recurring) for the financial year 2021 and 2022 were approved.

The Senate approved the nomination of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahbaz, Campus Coordinator UET Narowal Campus, as member of senate on the Finance and Planning Committee (F and PC). The house reviewed and approved the recommendations of the Syndicate regarding sustainability of UET Pension Fund and utilization of profit to be earned on the investment of fund. The Senate also endorsed the Regularization of Service Statues 2021. The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the patronage, guidance and support of the Chancellor / Governor Punjab for the university.

While presenting the progress report of the university, the Vice-Chancellor intimated the house that university has fully implemented the teaching of Translation of Holy Quran across all undergraduate degree programs. He also updated that UET is continues to improve in international rankings. Most recently, UET Lahore is ranked 376th in the world Engineering and Technology universities. The degree program in Petroleum and Gas Engineering is ranked in the top 100 whereas three other programs are ranked in top 500 program of the world. In the most recent Graduate Employability Ranking 2022, only five Pakistani universities have been ranked out of a total of 786 who are evaluated.

UET Lahore stands at 351-500 and is ranked highest in the public sector universities in Punjab and second in the country. HE further updated the house that in 2022 Subject Rankings the UET is ranked 801-1000 in Physical Sciences. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the role and contributions of the UET faculty in the continuous improvement in university ranking and winning the competitive research grants, many of them in collaboration with local and international academic institutions and industry.

UET has recently signs meaningful MoUs with local and international academic institutions and industry like Sunder Industries, Schlumberger, Pelosi etc. The local collaborations are focused on creating opportunities for internships and employment as well as involving students in R and D through final year projects and postgraduate theses. HE thanked the UET teachers who have exhibited great responsibility during online education due to COVID-19 pandemic. The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Registrar and his staff for their administrative support in the affairs of the university and their contribution in organizing historic high frequency of meetings of statutory bodies. The Chancellor showed his satisfaction on the overall performance of the university and appreciated the services of the Vice-Chancellor and his team.

Delegation from The University of Utah, USA visited NUST

Islamabad, October 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):A delegation from The University of Utah, USA visited NUST on October 05, 2021. The delegation included Dr M Aslam Chaudhry, Professor of Economics, Chief of Party / HESSA (Higher Education System Strengthening Activity) Project; Dr Michael Barber, Chair / Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Project Lead / HESSA Project; Ms Cheri Daily, Executive Director, Global Engagement Office, Project Manager HESSA Project and Dr Randy Mcrillis, Dean Students Affairs, U-Asia Campus, Team Leader for Students Component/HESSA Project.

The delegation met with Rector NUST Engr Javed Mahmood Bukhari and Pro-Rector (Academics) Dr Osman Hasan to discuss possible collaborative options. The visiting delegate encouraged and highly appreciated NUST’s performance and facilities provided for its faculty and students to ensure quality teaching, learning and research.

Rector NUST and Head of Delegation both agreed that by collaborating with each other for the betterment of the region. The delegation also visited NUST Inter-Disciplinary Cluster for Higher Education (NICHE) and U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Energy (USPCASE).

National Conference on Security and Development

Islamabad, October 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):NUST School of Social Sciences and Humanities (S3H) hosted a one-day national conference on “Security and Development” on October 4, 2021. The conference underlined that security and development are no longer limited to the military alone; it also encompasses a broad range of developmental philosophies and strategies that are directly or indirectly influenced by traditional and non-traditional threats, including economic, political, societal and environmental. In addition, the conference highlighted that the concept of human security is very crucial to ascertaining as well as addressing threats to the well-being of individuals.

The main focus of the discussion was around the challenges of the 21st Century that are no longer limited to any single threat only. Hence, a state’s national security and developmental policies must cast their net wide, beyond simply relying on hard power means, to ensure national security. The conference concluded that the notion of national security in this day and age accounts not just for military security and proactive diplomacy but also economic, political, social, human, food, energy, and environmental security.

Sharing his thoughts at the opening ceremony, Pro-Rector Academics NUST Dr Osman Hasan underpinned the need to determine various dimensions of security that are detrimental to the overall development of a state. He also emphasised that in the current challenging environment, it is incumbent upon the states to consciously engage in national and global security initiatives with a wide range of security areas.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Inspector General Highways and Motorways Police, Dr Syed Kaleem Imam. In his remarks, he relayed his experiences and accentuated how police reforms are vital for national security. Apart from NUST students and faculty, students from various other universities participated in the conference.

UMT holds the Investiture Ceremony of 3rd Rector

Lahore, October 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):University of Management and Technology (UMT) held investiture ceremony in honour of the new Rector Dr. Asif Raza, who took over as 3rd Rector of UMT. Dr. Asif Raza has served Pakistan Air Force and retired as Assistant Chief of Air Staff PAF. During his service, he has overseen various projects of national interests which include Avionics Project JF-17 as its director. He has also served as Pro-Rector in NUST for twelve years. In recognition of his services he was conferred with Hilal-e-Imtiaz (M) and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (M).

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an followed by the national anthem. The occasion was graced by President UMT, Ibrahim Hasan Murad, Director TKS Ms Mariam Murad, DG UMT Abid Sherwani, the outgoing Rector UMT Dr. Muhammad Aslam, Dr. Mujahid Kamran, Mr. Saleem Ata, Head OSSV Major (rtd) Ibrar Hussain, registrar UMT, Deans, Directors and UMT faculty and staff.

President UMT, Mr. Ibrahim Hasan Murad appreciated the hardworking and passionate faculty and staff of UMT. He said that we are carrying forward the vision of Dr. Hassan Murad (Shaheed), which was to create an institution that is based on values and merit. He stated that the vision of UMT is to become one of the top 100 universities in Asia by 2030.

He also paid tribute to the services rendered by Dr. Aslam the outgoing Rector UMT and welcomed Dr. Asif Raza onboard. Concluding his remarks he asked Allah for His guidance and prayed that this transition becomes beneficial for making the university a world class institution.

The outgoing Rector UMT Dr. Muhammad Aslam shared his thoughts while saying that it was a great experience working with a prestigious institution like UMT. He thanked the entire UMT family for their support throughout his journey. He wished great success to Dr. Asif Raza for his new role at UMT.

Rector UMT Dr. Asif Raza, Air vice Marshall (Rtd) addressed the attendees and said that it is a great honour for me to work with such an excellent organization, UMT. He hoped that the entire faculty would support him in promoting quality education. He added that the growth of UMT in the last few years is exemplary. He also suggested regular communication with the Deans, Directors, senior management as well as students will be necessary for further improvements.

He added that we will work to; improve the employability of graduates, strengthen the entrepreneurial and research culture, internationalization, and attracting high quality students. President UMT, Mr. Ibrahim Hasan Murad also presented souvenir to outgoing rector Dr. Muhammad Aslam. Dr. Asif Raza signed the Assumption of Charge Document for the post of Rector-UMT and was presented a memento by the outgoing Rector Dr. Muhammad Aslam.
