Dr. Hasan Sohaib Murad (1959-2018) in Memoriam

Lahore, September 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):The reminiscence of a man of vision and character is an act of benevolence. It serves to inspire. It motivates. It enlightens our lives. Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad (Shaheed) has left a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. His name is not carved on his lowh-e-mazaar (tombstone) but in the hearts of hundreds and thousands of people who are the beneficiary of his kindness, guidance, compassion, fairness, humility, piety, intellectual prowess, generosity, scholarship and his unique style of leadership.

He was a teacher par excellence. He did not merely impart knowledge but inculcated values because he believed in the power of knowledge as an agent of transformation. He envisioned this transformation in the service of individuals, their society and their country at large. His educational philosophy embodied knowledge not as an end in itself but as a means to higher human ideals.

The famous French writer, Guy de Maupassant, once wrote: “Our memory is a more perfect world than the universe: it gives back life to those who no longer exist.” But in the persona of Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad (Shaheed) we see a great reversal. Even from his inanimate presence, he ceaselessly conveys to us a message of life, hope, tenacity and service.

The enduring message of this great teacher of ours is a blessing for us not only for the time we spent at the esteemed institutions that he established and nurtured through his untiring efforts but is a guiding light for the rest of our life. This emanates from his seminal thought that education is not for wages alone, but for the holistic development of the individual, and ultimately for the society.

We are remembering Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad (Shaheed) at the third commemoration of his demise (September 10). In order that this remembrance does not become an annual ritual that lasts for just the day of the commemoration, I have given some serious thought to finding an innovative way to turn it into an act of perpetual remembrance.

It is with this perspective that I am pleased to present to you the unique gift of his thoughts in the form of a book. It is published in Urdu, entitled Ilm, Amal, Zindagi. This book offers an extraordinary insight into his moral and ethical cogitation that might otherwise have remained hidden in the midst of his routine life at the campus. His mentoring through this book would brighten your life with the affective domain of human life.

It would restore your confidence in the innate human goodness and it would equip you towards achieving personal and social transformation. By reading this book, you would be fulfilling the vision of Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad (Shaheed) who strived not only to educate you but to transform you into a leader in thought and action.

All Pakistan Newspapers Society strongly laments perpetual efforts of Federal Government to curtail the independence of the media

Karachi, September 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) strongly lamented the perpetual efforts of the Federal Government to curtail the independence of the media, the latest being the proposed PMDA which, in the opinion of the APNS Executive Committee, is intended to strangulate and control the entire media of the country.

The Executive Committee of the APNS at its meeting held at Karachi on September 09, 2021 chaired by the President, APNS, Mr. Sarmad Ali was briefed by the President on different meetings with the stakeholders and the Federal Government on the establishment of Pakistan Media Development Authority. The members unanimously rejected the proposal and termed it as an attempt to tighten the Federal Government control over the media from one platform. The proposed PMDA appears as extension of PEMRA to all media with more regimental provisions as subjugate and take over the independence of free media.

The Executive Committee further stated that the proposal was unconstitutional as any Federal legislation to regulate print media is beyond the power of parliament after the 18th constitutional amendment. The APNS out-rightly rejected the proposal to make it mandatory for all types of media to obtain licenses and renewal of registration. The proposal envisages the concept of media tribunal whose members were to be appointed by the Federal Government which is a form of direct control over the media.

The Concept is contrary to the very notion of the justice and a fair hearing as it denies the right of appeal in the high courts. The tribunals have been authorized with the punishment up to 03 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.25 million. The Committee observed that the Federal Government intends to tighten its control on media at large. The committee also noted that unless the proposed law to establish the PMDA is shared with stakeholders, no meaningful consultation was possible.

The Executive Committee considered the report of Advertising Committee and approved M/s. Advertising and Business Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd, Peshawar for confirmation of accreditation. M/s. Marcom (Pvt.) Ltd, Islamabad and M/s. Wings Media (Pvt) Ltd, Lahore were granted provisional accreditation. The Committee also approved the restructuring of M/s. Zenith Advertising Communication (Pvt.) Ltd, Karachi.

The members offered fateha on the sad demise of Mr. Arif Nizami, a veteran editor and journalist, Mrs. Shamim Akhtar wife of Mr. Ghulam Akbar and mother of Mr. Inam Akbar and Mr. Nadeem Akbar. Sahibzada Zia-ur-Rahman Shami, elder brother of Mr. Mujeeb-ur-Rahman Shami, Chief Editor, Daily Pakistan, Lahore and aunt of Ms. Fauzia Shaheen, publisher, Monthly Dastak, Karachi.

Nasreen can read and write!

Karachi, September 11, 2021 (PPI-OT):When Nasreen walked into a TCF School in Ibrahim Goth for her daughter’s admission, little did she know that she was about to embark on the most thrilling journey of her life. “I sat in the principal’s office across her desk while she explained the admission process for my daughter. Just when I thought I was done, Madam Shabnam, the Principal, leaned in and told me that she had something special for me – a place in TCF’s adult literacy programme, Aagahi. I hesitated at first, but then said yes,” revealed Nasreen.

After going through a basic Urdu literacy and numeracy course of 4 months as an Aagahi learner, today, Nasreen is able to read and write. “I never held a pencil in my hand until this day and now I can write. I can read labels, follow street signs and make simple calculations. I only went in to change my daughter’s life through education and in the process, mine changed too,” shared Nasreen with glittering eyes.
