REGINA, Saskatchewan, July 08, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A new collaboration between the China Building Materials Academy, (CBMA) and Canadian based, International CCS Knowledge Centre (Knowledge Centre) will see simultaneous advancements in understanding and knowledge sharing of carbon capture technology designed specifically to see substantial emission reductions from the global cement industry.

The first initiative under the agreement, Carbon Capture Use Piloting with Cement Kiln Project will aid CBMA in applying the Knowledge Centre’s model and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) of a test platform – which has a carbon dioxide (CO2) capture capacity of approximately 155 kg CO2/per day. The project will be built and piloted on a carbon capture system that utilizes the post combustion flue gas from a producing cement kiln.

The Knowledge Centre will have an observer role to learn and gain insight on the characteristics of a cement kiln operation and its integration with a post combustion carbon capture system. The agreement grants the Knowledge Centre access to the operational data, such as further design, testing, data based on the modelling, emission-related information, and any improvements made to the CO2 capture test platform.

This collaboration agreement is part of a bilateral science and technology cooperation between Canada and China, the China-Canada Science & Technology Cooperative Action Plan. The agreement also syncs with goals of the Chinese government to achieve carbon peaking before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060 with efforts of the cement industry in China to accelerate innovation in low carbon technologies.

Through the carbon capture pilot platform, the CBMA is expected to adapt the application for potential scale-up to commercial demonstration with know-how that could be applied across the sizable fleet of China National Building Materials Ltd. (CNBM), the world’s largest cement producer and the parent of CBMA.

The Knowledge Centre is currently completing a feasibility study on a full-scaled post-combustion carbon capture system on Lehigh’s Cement plant in Edmonton, Canada by applying the same model based on large-scale CCS experiences from the commercial coal-fired power plant, at the famed Canadian based Boundary Dam 3 CCS Facility.

Quotes

“The International Knowledge Centre is proud to be a partner in assisting the CBMA on its CCS development and deployment journey to help China realize its ambitious goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, which is positive for the world.”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Cement Emission Overview

  • Concrete, a product of cement, is the second most consumed substance on the planet, next to water, with roughly attributing three tonnes of concrete yearly by every person on earth (State of the Planet, Earth Institute, Columbia University).
  • Total emissions from the cement industry contribute as much as 7-8% of global CO2 emissions.
  • Two thirds or 5% of global emissions result from the chemical reactions in the cement production process and therefore cannot be eliminated through gains in energy efficiency.
  • Global demand for cement is expected to increase 12-23% by 2050 (IEA Report: Transforming Industry through CCUS)
  • As the largest cement producer, China accounts for about 55% of global production, followed remotely by India at 8%.
  • China’s cement industry is estimated about 1.2 Gt of CO2 emissions to their national GHG emissions, annually.

China-Canada Science & Technology Cooperative Action Plan

  • China-Canada Science & Technology Cooperative Action Plan is a framework for cooperation in scientific and technological research, which will extend and strengthen the conduct of cooperative activities in areas of common interest and encourage the application of the results of such cooperation to their economic and social benefit.

We all have one slogan; no compromise is accepted on Kashmir – Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Islamabad, July 08, 2021 (PPI-OT):Chairman Pakistan People’s Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari addressed a huge public gathering at Haveli in connection with the Azad Kashmir election campaign of his party. He said that this is the place where Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had addressed a huge public gathering in 1974. At that time the soldier of the Party Mumtaz Rathore was with him and then he proved to be a loyal brother of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. Today Faisal Rathore is here to continue his father’s struggle with the PPP.

Chairman Bilawal said that no one can finish the PPP. The Quaid-e-Awam fought for the Kashmir cause at every front. We have a relation going back three generations. He always raised voice for the people’s rights. He was the one who had said that we will fight for Kashmir for a thousand years. He was the chairman of OIC. He gave Pakistan nuclear capability. When he used to gve a call for strike everything on both sides of the border used to close down. His daughter, Mohtarma Benazir had said that where the Kashmiris will shed their sweat we will shed our blood. The Kashmiri people always supported her. She provided employment for men and women.

It is unfortunate that our current prime minister is a puppet, selected and incapable. He responded to the historic attack on Kashmir by saying “What can I do?” If Quaid-e-Awam was there today he would have gone to the United States with the Kashmir case. The response of the puppet was to rename the Kashmir Highway as Srinagar Highway and changing his own map with his own pen. Imran Khan did not fulfil the aspirations of Kashmiri people.

We all have one slogan that “no compromise is accepted on Kashmir. We do not take dictation from Delhi or Islamabad, rather from you. Quaid-e-Awam slogan was “Hamara Naara Sab pe Bhari, Rai Shumari, Rai Shumari”. We do not want a prime minister who prays for Modi’s success in elections nor a prime minister who invites Modi to wedding celebrations. This PM Khan was a polling agent of Gen. Musharraf and Modi. The PPP is the only party which cannot compromise on Kashmir as it was founded on the issue of Kashmir. We believe in the United Nations’ resolutions.

Chairman PPP said that the real face of Imran Khan’s change is historic poverty, price hike and unemployment. The PPP also increased salaries by 120 percent, pensions by 100 percent and for the soldiers fighting terrorism by 175 percent. On 25th July the Jiyala Prime Minister will be elected and his first measure will be to increase salaries and pensions. The PPP introduced BISP during the worst recession in the world.

This Ehsas programme is nothing but the BISP. PM Khan has also stolen our foreign policy. Imran is lying by saying that he will not provide air bases to the United States because this decision of not providing air bases was taken by the parliament during the PPP government. Bhutto’s slogan was “Maang Raha Hai Har Insan, Roti Kapra aur Makan” but this puppet is snatching all these things from the poor people. This country will not progress until we do not look after our growers, labourers and youth. The Jiyalas have already defeated the puppet along with other parties and Faisal Rathore has won from this constituency. Chairman Bilawal said that Rathore will fulfil the PPP project to build an expressway from Islamabad to Kashmir. This will be a gift to you from the PPP.

Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that he is in the field to complete the mission of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. The Jiyalas have to chase out not only the puppet from Kashmir but other parties as well. I just ask the other party not to become a cat who runs away but a lion who faces the adversaries. He said that the PPP has always sided with the people and the people will vote for the PPP on 25 July.

Certified liars on a vilification campaign against Former President Asif Ali Zardari

Islamabad, July 08, 2021 (PPI-OT):Former Deputy Chairman Senate, Senator Saleem Mandviwala has said that the only source of livelihood for some people is to run a campaign to discredit Asif Ali Zardari. The fabricators of the fake stories are certified forgers. These are the same forgers who had falsely claimed to have recovered Rs. 70 crore and 10 Kg gold from the Governor’s House at the time of President Asif Ali Zardari’s arrest from the Governor’s House in Lahore in 1996 and that too from a small brief case. Hence, the claim of getting Rs 33 billion by liars in a reference against Asif Ali Zardari is a complete lie and a tactic of media trial.

Senator Saleem Mandviwala said that President Asif Ali Zardari has been a target of anti-democratic forces for the last 33 years. They had even fabricated a story about a bomb being attached to someone’ leg and a false drug case was also initiated against him but President Asif Ali Zardari faced these false allegations in the courts and was honourably acquitted.

Senator Mandviwala said that the fact is that President Asif Ali Zardari has been a target of Bhutto’s enemies since 1988. He said that those who made false allegations against Asif Ali Zardari were humiliated in the past and will face humiliation in the future as that is the fate of these elements.

Staying ahead of risks – the rise of the accountant as the ‘guardian of information

Islamabad, July 08, 2021 (PPI-OT):More collaboration, more collective action needed to tackle the risks ahead an unmissable era is dawning for the accountancy profession and its role in effective risk management as a result of the global pandemic, environmental sustainability and economic turbulence, says ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). In its new report Rethinking risk for the future, ACCA asserts that as guardians of information, accountants can help organisations not only detect and better understand the emerging risks and opportunities facing them, but also cultivate the mind-sets needed to think more long-term.

Capturing the views of its global members, including members in Pakistan, the report also showcases their vital roles in building operational resilience through Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), financial reporting, and predictive data analysis. The report explains that while COVID-19 is the biggest crisis in a generation, business and society also face huge risks from rapid climate change – perhaps the biggest risk of all. Risk management has therefore been forced to centre stage like never before.

Accountants now have an unmissable opportunity to reassess how they can add more value in a post-Covid world where a myriad of pressing environmental, social and economic risks are prevalent. For the report, Pakistan respondents were asked about what they believed to be the biggest risks to their organisations over the next two years, with 24% saying industry disruption and 22% international trade. They were also asked what risk activity their organisation would most likely upgrade in 2021, with 51% saying risk culture for new working conditions, followed by 20% for operational resilience.

Rachael Johnson, report author and ACCA’s head of risk management and corporate governance says: ‘What’s clear from our engagement with ACCA members is the need for accountancy professionals to truly understand the strategic and business risks that their organisations face in the short, medium and long-term. In this way, through providing better informed decision making, they can help organisations maintain operational resilience and become more sustainable in today’s fast-changing, interconnected environment.’

Helen Brand, ACCA’s chief executive adds: ‘Because of COVID-19, we have all learned new and vital lessons about effective risk management over the last year, so that disruption preparedness is now top of organisations; priorities. The challenge is about how this readiness is sustained. Professional accountants are central to all this – that’s why now’s the time for the profession to show in real ways how it helps organisations change behaviour, rethink risk, and how accountants can help set the tone from the very top.’

Rethinking risk for the future concludes that risk can no longer be managed in isolation, with Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan ending: ‘Accountants, given their skills and professional duties, are in a privileged position to optimise their storytelling skills in new ways by creating more dynamic metrics and reporting methodologies. Accountants should be taking on a more advisory role in explaining the facts and possibilities behind the numbers, breaking them down and putting them into context for their organisations.

‘This is an unmissable opportunity for accountancy to encourage more collaboration and collective action on environmental, social and governance matters by working with public policymakers and partnering with leaders to help grasp how digitalisation and new technologies can help avoid harm to people and the planet.’ The report includes expert insights from several ACCA members in Pakistan including: Rizwan Ikram, chief risk officer at Mobilink Microfinance Bank, who just recently moved to Telenor Microfinance Bank Ltd, Pakistan in Islamabad in the same role as CRO  Owais Ali, operational and liquidity risk analyst at Al Baraka Bank Pakistan Ltd., Karachi
