National Assembly: Thirty-three lawmakers participate in budget debate

Islamabad, June 24, 2021 (PPI-OT):The National Assembly continued general discussion on the federal budget for the financial year 2021-22 and 33 lawmakers took part in the debate, observes Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) in its Daily Factsheet on Thursday.

Following are key observations of the proceedings during 14th sitting of the 34th session:

Members’ Participation

The House met for 11 hours and 15 minutes.

The proceedings started at 10:02 am against the scheduled time of 10:00 am.

The speaker did not attend the sitting.

The deputy speaker presided over the sitting for 32 minutes, while the remaining sitting was chaired by two members of panel of chairpersons.

The leaders of the House (Prime Minister) and the opposition did not attend the sitting.

A total of 20 lawmakers (six percent) were present at the outset and 26 (eight percent) at the adjournment of the sitting.

The parliamentary leaders of BAP and GDA attended the sitting.

Seven out of ten minority lawmakers were also present during the proceedings.

Representation and Responsiveness

Thirty-three lawmakers participated in general discussion on federal budget for the financial year 2021-22 and consumed eight hours and 55 minutes of the proceedings.

Order and Institutionalization

An MMAP lawmaker pointed out the quorum at 01:51 pm which led to the suspension of the proceedings for 37 minutes.

Seventeen lawmakers spoke on points of order for an hour and 22 minutes.

The House was adjourned to meet again on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 11:00 am.

‘Orders of the Day’ was available to the legislators, observers and public.

Attendance of lawmakers was available to the media and observers.

Sindh Assembly: Five lawmakers participate in debate on provincial budget

Islamabad, June 24, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Sindh Assembly continued general discussion on provincial budget 2021-22 and five lawmakers took part in the debate, observes Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) its Daily Factsheet on Thursday.

Following are key observations of the House proceedings during 16th sitting of the 21st session:

Members’ Participation

The House met for two hours and 14 minutes; however, the proceedings remained suspended for 22 minutes due to prayer break and protest.

The sitting started at 12:30 pm against the scheduled time of 11:00 am.

The speaker chaired the proceedings for an hour and 33 minutes while the remaining sitting was presided over by a member of panel of chairpersons.

The deputy speaker did not attend the sitting.

The leader of the House (Chief Minister) was absent.

The opposition leader attended the proceedings for an hour and 32 minutes.

As many as 20 MPAs (14 percent) were present at the outset and 78 (47 percent) at the adjournment of the sitting.

The parliamentary leaders of PPPP, PTI, MQMP, GDA, and MMAP were present, while the leader of TLP did not attend the sitting.

Seven out of nine minority lawmakers attended the proceedings.

Representation and Responsiveness

Five lawmakers – PPPP (three) and one each of GDA and PTI – participated in general discussion on budget for the financial year 2021-22 as well as supplementary budget for the financial year 2020-21. They consumed 59 minutes of the proceedings.

Order and Institutionalization

Lawmakers belonging to MQM protested for an hour and 54 minutes over their reservations on provincial budget. PTI lawmakers also joined this protest for six.

The chair suspended the proceedings for seven minutes due to protest of MQM lawmakers in the House.

The House was adjourned to meet again on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 10:00 am.

Olympic Day celebrated by organizing Table Tennis Exhibitional Matches at Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore External

Lahore, June 24, 2021 (PPI-OT):Olympic Day is celebrated worldwide on June 23rd of each year to commemorate the birth of the Modern Olympics Games that were held in Paris back in June, 1894. This day is one of the key events of our annual calendar where we engage with partners for promotion of Olympism in our community. Thousands of people of all ages participate in sporting and cultural activities, such as fun runs, exhibitions, music, tree plantation, beach cleaning and educational seminars. Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) also regularly celebrates the Olympic Day every year.

Today, Olympic Day was celebrated at Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore by organizing Table Tennis Exhibitional Matches. National / International athletes (male and female) played in these matches. Civil society and children of all ages also participated. Mr. Shaukat Javed, Vice President Pakistan Olympic Association / NOC Pakistan graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Presidents and Secretaries General of Affiliated Units of POA also participated in the event.
