FARMINGDALE, N.Y., June 17, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Janet D’Addario, a prodigious creative and philanthropic force throughout the world, and wife of D’Addario Chairman, Jim D’Addario, died on June 14th in her home, surrounded by her entire family. She was 72.

The cause was complications from gall bladder cancer, said her husband, Jim D’Addario.

Janet Marie D’Addario was born on December 10th, 1948 in Nassau County. Her education circumnavigated Long Island: St. Brigid in Westbury; St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay, and Nassau Community College in Garden City.

In 1966, the course of her life would forever change when the 18-year-old lead singer of a folk group met another young, budding musician who was instantly smitten by her tender voice and magnetic personality. Jim and Janet D’Addario would go on to marry, sing and perform on stage together, and start an extraordinary 50-year partnership that produced a family, a philanthropic legacy, and the most prestigious music accessories business in the world.

When D’Addario & Co. was first founded in 1973, Janet used her creative talents to design the company’s advertising as well as the packaging design for all of their products. As a fledgling organization, Janet’s vision and compassion had a tremendous influence on the development of the culture that guides the organization today.

She would go on to wear many hats, including head of Artist Relations and co-founder of the D’Addario Foundation, which continues to provide music education to young children in underserved communities. Janet served as the Managing Director of the Foundation for 20 years—helping to raise awareness for the cause by producing classical music concerts in cities around the world.

Ms. D’Addario was known by family and friends for her peerless compassion and generosity—fervently believing that actions mean far more than just words. She would go on to serve 11 years on the Board of Long Island Cares, the charity created by Harry Chapin to eradicate hunger on Long island. As a devout Catholic, she supported numerous Catholic charities across the globe, the Long Island Catholic Hospital system as well as her own, personal parish, St. Brigid.

The one charity that held a particularly special place in her heart was Providence House, a New York institution that provides transitional housing for homeless women and children.

“Providence House is, in so many ways, the very embodiment of my wife…when she saw pain, she wanted to ease it. When she saw hunger, she brought food. When she saw homelessness, she provided shelter. But most importantly when Janet saw someone with no hope, she worked hard to provide them with the tools to restore their will to overcome the challenges they were facing.,” said Jim D’Addario.

Ms. D’Addario served as a Board Member of Providence House for 21 years and as its President from 2004-2019. Over those years, she helped raise millions of dollars to ensure thousands of women and children would have a pathway to a brighter future. Her invaluable work led to Janet and Jim being named the first People of Hope in 2002 and the construction of the 43-unit D’Addario Residence in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

In addition to her philanthropic work, Janet was an avid foodie and prolific painter. Not surprisingly, her greatest joy was bringing friends and family together for a homemade meal and the occasional musical performance by she and Jim, as well as their many musical friends.

Janet D’Addario was the daughter of Robert James Carbone and Annabelle (Eannaccone) Carbone of Westbury, New York. She is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, Jim D’Addario, and their three children: Julie (Pat); Amy (Marcus) and Robert (Gina). She is also survived by eight grandchildren, and her beloved dogs, Dave and Blue.

In lieu of any gifts or flowers, the family is asking anyone wishing to pay their respects to consider a modest donation to Providence House (https://www.providencehouse.org/support-our-work).

AKU and WHO EMRO join hands to raise LMIC healthcare standards

Karachi, June 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Aga Khan University’s Medical College, Pakistan’s faculty collaborated with the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean to conduct a comprehensive 10-day course on hospital management for healthcare professionals in low and middle income countries (LMICs).

Most senior officials in hospitals in developing countries tend to be doctors who have been promoted to managerial roles. It is rare for these healthcare professionals to have experience or formal training in how to plan and run the operations of a hospital which hinders efforts to address common issues in the healthcare sector such as operational inefficiencies, poor use of resources and unproductive workflows that impact patients.

Dr Sameen Siddiqi, who is a former WHO Director of Health Systems, and current Chair, Department of Community Health Sciences at AKU Medical College, spearheaded this multilateral collaboration as the Course Advisor. The course received above 400 applications, signifying a large demand for such capacity building trainings in LMICs. Over 40 healthcare professionals working in public and private sector hospitals in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia and Sudan attended the skills-based online course which included case studies, group projects and expert sessions that spanned key areas such as strategic planning, finance and budgeting, supply chain management, workforce management and disaster preparedness and management.

“You can’t raise healthcare standards without improving the performance of hospitals,” said Dr Bisma Imtiaz, Course Co-Director. “Improving hospital management practices is a proven, low-cost and high-impact method to enhance access to quality healthcare.” Dr Narjis Rizvi was also a Co-Director of the course.

Participants were shown how to evaluate the technical feasibility, cost implications and quality and safety parameters of various proposals to enhance hospital performance. They were challenged with a hospital management case study situated in a relatable low resource setting. The case studies spanned the duration of the course, with participants working in groups to apply skills acquired such as conducting SWOT analyses, conflict resolution, vision and mission statement development, budget planning, application of priority matrices to complex conditions, and much more.

Groups showcased their work during the closing ceremony, leaving course facilitators and directors confident in participants’ abilities to utilise all tools in their own resource constrained hospitals to improve healthcare standards. Course participant Esther Mwadime commented on the case study activity, saying “It really brought us together, it was the epitome of true teamwork in a diverse environment.”

“The WHO remains committed to improving hospital performance in order to achieve universal healthcare goals,” said Dr Ravaghi. “We will continue to pursue this goal through collaborations and partnerships with reputable academic institutes in the region, particularly with AKU, to ensure sustainability of these programmes.” The course contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 which stands for strong global partnerships and cooperation to best achieve sustainable development in LMICs. The course’s objectives align under target 3C of Goal 3, Good Health and Wellbeing, which call for special efforts to build the capacity of healthcare workforce in developing countries, and contribute to the overall United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

‘Seismic’ tax policy reforms announced by G7 face aftershocks, says ACCA

Islamabad, June 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):New tax policies announced recently by G7 communiqué will face hurdles as the proposals are yet to be agreed by the G20 and other jurisdictions, says ACCA today, asserting that the three foundations for a sound tax system are simplicity, certainty and stability.

Jason Piper, head of tax and business law at ACCA says: ‘Committing to a global minimum tax of at least 15% on a country by country basis is a challenge, predicated on the agreement of other jurisdictions’ governments. To be truly effective it will need to go beyond the G7, and even the G20, to the OECD’s Inclusive Framework of 139 countries, requiring compromise as governments surrender legal sovereignty in return for an effective, practical framework.

‘And the move for multinationals to pay tax in the countries where they do business – and not just were they are headquartered – will create new legal and accounting challenges for banks, businesses and tax authorities.’

ACCA says the main challenges are about achieving true parity and fairness. Jason Piper explains: ‘This is indeed a seismic announcement, but it’s more a foreshock than the main event. Corporate taxes contribute only a small proportion of total revenues, and these measures capture only a tiny fraction of even that. The real heavy lifting is done by consumption and personal income taxes, and that is where reforms could make a real difference to the sorts of societies we live in.

‘Overall, tax ‘mitigation’ is the symptom, not the cause. We’ve broken the link between business and the society it serves, and somehow need to rebuild that. Building a tax system which supports and encourages a circular economy would help – and profits taxes are a very small part of that. However, this is a move to be welcomed, bringing fairness and transparency to a system that has long been seen solely as a matter for national governments. We have long called for a halt to the race to the bottom for setting corporate taxes.’

In 2019, ACCA with CA ANZ and IFAC published a report called G20 public trust in tax: Surveying public trust in G20 tax systems. This showed that most people surveyed for this report were supportive of cooperation on international tax policy to create a more coherent international tax system (69%).

Jason Piper adds: ‘We know from our research that transparency is a top issue for G20 citizens when considering tax systems. Across the G20, respondents to our global research wanted more clarity on how and from whom their governments are collecting taxes, and how their tax money is spent. Corruption in the tax system is a top concern in multiple countries, and that has remained the case in survey data for the 2021 Report, which will be published in September of this year.’

Jason Piper concludes: ‘Competition on tax policy among countries, whether to take a greater share of revenues or attract multinational business, has been the reality of the international tax environment for many years. What the G7 has announced aims to change this reality – what’s essential is that we all have trust in tax systems and this remains to be seen.’
