Karachi, December 22, 2017 (PPI-OT):It is heartening that a local lady from Karachi donated her eyes after death for transplant to corneal blind patients. Pakistan Eye Bank Society received a call from the family of a deceased lady, who pledged for eye donation after death as a vital will. Within two hours after death team of PEBS lead by Dr Raheel Rahman, retrieved two corneas from the deceased lady. Within 48 hours a team of doctors lead by Dr Qazi Wasiq Medical Director PEBS successfully operated two patients, Ms Jamalu and Mohammad Hussain, waiting for corneal transplant at PEBS Hospital, free of charge.

It is worth mentioning that PEBS has provided more than 16000 corneas for the poor corneal blind patients free of charge, Up till now 206 corneas were received from local donors, while more than 35000 living donors have pledged for corneal donation after death ( it is family’s commitment to fulfill deceased’s free will to accomplish). Roughly estimated there are more than 250,000 living corneal blind patients in Pakistan.

This great gesture from the family of local lady and eye donation of greatest humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi will boost eye donation movement in Pakistan. PEBS along with other organizations is working hard for the development of Modern Eye Banking Network in Pakistan under the guidance of International leading eye bank experts.
