1st Scientific Training on Phenotypic Characterization of Livestock Breeds of Pakistan

Rawalpindi, June 22, 2021 (PPI-OT): A five days first scientific training on “Phenotypic Characterization of Livestock Breeds of Pakistan” for Animal Breeding and Genetics Faculty/Researchers commenced at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR), on June 21, 2021.

The training is organized by the PMAS-AAUR National Center for Livestock Breeding Genetics and Genomics with the objectives to build the capacity of faculty and researchers from all over the country for phenotypic traits and its genetics of Livestock breed for better productivity and elevation of poverty.

Prof. Dr. M. Sajjad Khan Vice Chancellor Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Bahawalpur was the chief Guest while Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman was the Guest of Honour. The program was moderated by Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad Khan (Chairman Dept. of Veterinary Pathology PMAS -AAUR).

Vice Chancellor, Cholistan University, Prof. Dr. M. Sajjad Khan emphasized that, Pakistani livestock sector contributes about 58% of the value of agriculture and nearly 11% to the agricultural gross domestic product (AGDP). In the Pakistani livestock sector, milk is the single most important commodity. However, Pakistan is ranked third in milk production worldwide.

It plays an important role in poverty reduction strategies, and this sector may be developed very quickly as all required inputs for this sector are available in adequate quantities in the country. Pakistan is endowed with diverse livestock genetic resources, he added. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qmar-uz-Zaman said that Pakistan has a large livestock population, well adapted to the local environmental conditions but there is a dire need to explore the genetic potential of animals for optimum production beside good management practices.

He was of the view that Pakistan is lacking skilled human resources and said that capacity building of you scientists, researchers and postgraduate students is very important in developing the skilled human resources. Through trained manpower we not only enhance our workforce but this is indirectly promoting research in the country, he added. He said that this project has a great potential and will revolutionize the livestock sector of Pakistan and that will ultimately contribute to the national development. He hoped that participants of this training will learn a lot which would be helpful to them in their respective organizations.

Kitchen Lab inaugurated for Arid Literacy School Students

Rawalpindi, June 19, 2021 (PPI-OT):A Kitchen Lab for the students of Aird Literacy School was inaugurated at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR), on June 17, 2021. The purpose of this kitchen lab is to ensure the provision of food on a daily basis to the poor students studying in the Aird Literacy School. This will also help to improve both the physical and nutritional development of the students.

The kitchen lab was set up in collaboration with German Gibbs Association under the supervision of the PMAS-AAUR department of Women Development Studies. Vice Chancellor, PMAS-AAUR Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman inaugurated the Kitchen Lab and also cut the cake. He also distributed uniforms among the students of Aird Literacy School and appreciated all the charitable efforts under the supervision of Women Development Studies Center.

Dr. Qaisara Parveen, Director, Women Development Studies Center, briefed the participants on all the welfare work being done for the betterment of students of Aired Literacy School. At the end of the event, Prof. Dr. Abdul Sabur, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, thanked all the participants. The event was attended by Dean Directors and Faculty Members of various departments.

PARB Chief visited Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi, June 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):Dr Abid Mahmood, Chief executive officer (CEO) Punjab Agriculture Research Board (PARB) visited Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR), on June 16, 2021 to inspect PARB funded Project “Evaluation and introduction of some exotic kiwi cultivars”.

The project was aimed to climatise kiwi plants according to the Potohar region which can be highly valuable and profitable for the locals. The Department of Horticulture PMAS-AAUR has been carrying out research and development work on promotion of kiwifruit in the Potohar region. Dr Abid Mahmood said that Potohar region is very suitable for the production of fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants and also has great potential for growing Kiwi, as its agro-climatic conditions are most suitable for the fruit.

PARB chief visited the Kiwi Plantation field at University Research Farm koont (URK) and also did inspection of KiwiGerm Plasm Unit (GPU) at Main campus. He praised the efforts of the Project team to complete the activities for the year 2021 well in time. While talking to Deans/Directors of the university PARB chief highlighted the efforts of Punjab Agriculture Research Board to provide the funding for quality research in Agriculture and also emphasized to motivate young faculty members to compete for Agriculture research grants announced by PARB.

Earlier, Dr. Muhammad Azam Khan, Project Manager/Chairman Department of Horticulture briefed the PARB Chief about the progress of the project. He informed that the project results are encouraging and hoped that Kiwi farming can improve livelihood by providing a good source of income.
