Lahore, November 06, 2017 (PPI-OT):Jamaat e Islami’s deputy Secretary General Dr Farid Ahmed Piracha, has called for setting up a high level committee comprising representation from government, the opposition and scientists to determine the causes of smog and suggest the solution. In a statement here on Monday, he said it was important that smog had become a threat after the plants run on coal in Sahiwal and some other areas began functioning. Apart from that, he said, a large number of factories and furnaces functioning in residential areas of big cities were continuously emitting smoke but the concerned department had shut its eyes.
Farid Piracha pointed that whereas energy plants run on coal were being closed all over the world or they were set up far away from population. Same was the policy for installing plants supplying coal. He said that except in Thar, the reason of setting up Sahiwal plant seemed to be corruption as a result of which the whole atmosphere had been polluted.
Farid Piracha said that the government had been able to prevent the protest by the growers of the Sahiwal by promising them free electricity however, smog was the only thing these growers were getting free and in plenty. He said that the government and the Environment authorities could not be absolved on their duties simply on the ground of weather change and they must join hands to work out the solution on permanent basis.
