Karachi, February 12, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Sindh Human Rights Department has constituted a three-member fact-finding committee after taking notice of the holding of Jirga in the case of Leelan Meghwar, a girl who committed suicide after being raped in Tharparkar district. The incident took place a few years ago in Konral, a remote village in Tharparkar district, where the case was filed on the plea of Leelan Meghwad’s father. In September 2021, the court sentenced the accused named in this case to 24 years in prison and a fine of 94 lakhs after the charges were proved. Yesterday, there were reports in the media and social media that the influential accused held a jirga to avoid court punishment and during this the victim’s family was convinced that he would pardon the accused.

On the instructions of Sindh Chief Minister’s Special Assistant on Human Rights, Surinder Valasai, the Provincial Human Rights Department immediately took notice of the matter and formed a fact-finding committee comprising three members of the vigilance committee of the department, Kashif Bajir, Noorjahan Gehilro and Parel Murri Advocate. Is. The committee formed under the leadership of Kashif Bajir will visit the said villages and gather all the facts in the meeting with the affected family, other members of the community, local journalists and concerned authorities and prepare their report in the light of the facts that have come to the attention of the department. It will be presented to the higher authorities.

The Sindh Human Rights Department has said that holding a Jirga to save convicted criminals is a serious matter. On this matter, Surendra Vilasai said that the court has sentenced the named criminal in the Leelan Meghwad murder case, while the family of the innocent girl who was the victim of cruelty is very poor people. He said that in this case, it is now necessary to see that the victim’s family was not threatened and consent was not given. He further said that the human rights department under its mandate will ensure justice with the blood of the oppressed girl.

Surendra Vilasai said that such jirgas lead to an increase in crime trends against women and the weak in the society, therefore, violation of human rights and law in the name of jirgas cannot be tolerated. The Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister for Human Rights clarified that the Sindh government has an unshakable determination not to be a victim of any expediency on the issue of the rights and protection of the poor and backward classes.
